I use hand basting a lot, my thinking is, less holes in the fabric compared to a machine doing the basting. It also saves a lot of unpicking when I make a muslin (old sheets) I baste the seams together by hand to try the fit. If it fits fine, I will sew it with my machine, and use the muslin for summer pjs, since I use woven fabric, but I always hand sew my muslins. If I use an untested sewing pattern, i hand baste it all together and fit, undo, and make changes if I have to, a lot easier to unpick a hand baste.

It used to be called 'tacking' when I was at school (UK) I still call it that and I always do it whenever I have two edges that need to be together under the machine foot. I never pin and then machine sew like some people do nowadays. Old habits die hard I suspect!
