I like this finish too! I do clip back that seam made on the first sew and then I understitch it and find this really helps in making it want to flip to the wrong side. It does mean an extra row of stitching but I've tried both ways and found doing this makes quite a difference :)

You are absolutely right that the extra row of stitching helps! It still blows my mind how these little things add up to make the wearing experience so much better ✨

I have used this technique on summers shirts made with lawn and they come out beautifully!!! I haven't used it on a hem in quite some time, but I will keep it in mind for some up and coming dress projects I have and see it it will do the trick! Thanks so much for making these wonderful videos!

Thanks, Danita!! And yes, a bias facing on lawn feels sooooo luxurious!! I recently made a top with that detail and it felt amazing haha!

Yep, I'm with you on that one, I do not enjoy rolling knits or other fabrics to hem. I'm in love with doing bias tape as a finish and this is how I do mine for a hidden look or I have also allowed my bias tape to show.

I love the finish of a bias facing! I usually hand whip stitch the bias tape down on the inside so you can't see any stitching at all.

A hand stitch finish is always such a cute idea! Love those sorts of details-- tiny, but they really give the piece such a nice touch.

Vintage on Tap I've got a piece I'm working on now where all the face fabric is green and the lining is white, and I used white bias tape to finish the arm holes and bottom but I'm using green thread to be sure my stitching is invisible in the outside. I love the look on the inside of all the lines of tiny green hand stitches!

I do this technique all the time. Agree with the clean finish on curves.... Much better than the rolled hem technique.
@VintageonTap7 жыл бұрын
Stupid rolled hems hahahaha!
@LiftingPinsandNeedles7 жыл бұрын
Vintage on Tap not to be mean but have you noticed that 99% of sewing channels that are the DIY type that trace from RTW clothes always use the rolled hem even for armholes and necklines.... I can't imagine a nice finish on the curves like that.... I've noticed that. The bias finish is much more professional.
@VintageonTap7 жыл бұрын
Oh totally! The rolled hem works great in certain circumstances, but (in my experience at least)- it can be finicky and I ain't got time for that haha

It's been a little while since I've made a bias finish on a V-neck, but I'm thinking it might need an attempt soon!

I love bias finish and started collecting then in all colours for funky and matching finish I am still a little confused about single and double though , can I use any on a finish or does it have to be double x
@VintageonTap7 жыл бұрын
I usually stick to single fold bias tape for my garment sewing-- just because I'm just doing a simple finish, rather than something more hefty like might be necessary for quilts and the like. The image linked below kind of shows you the difference, which tbh, even I have to review sometimes. At this point, though, I just go for the single fold and I'm good: 4.bp.blogspot.com/-WMD2k4QD3Co/VWZQFMV3JEI/AAAAAAAAPRM/fmU3iGIb5Qs/s1600/bias-binding-cross-section.jpg

So cool, I suspect this will be my go-to hemming technique - measuring and pinning the hem of a circle skirt in a flimsy material is not fun...
@VintageonTap7 жыл бұрын
Oh goodness yes, hemming a circle skirt can be insane!! I would probably ease in the bias tape to the skirt and then hand sew in place, though-- just a heads up about that. Sewing the bias tape with the machine in a big circle can end up being a headache sometimes, too.
@LampshadeLadEddie7 жыл бұрын
Indeed, thanks for the tip! Thankfully, if I cold manage handsewing a full length dress I can probably muster up the patience of hand hemming a skirt too :D (a LARP-dress so it wasn't tricky, just time consuming....)
@VintageonTap7 жыл бұрын
Sewing an entire dress by hand is absolutely a labor of love! At a certain point, a hem is easier compared to everything else haha Good luck with your LARP dress!!

You left off the most important set ........ triming seam allowance before applying the tape........
@VintageonTap6 жыл бұрын
Definitely if you're working with a thick fabric! I tend to use this technique on thin blouse fabric so I rarely trim down 🤓
