I love the concise thorough instructions. I make a lot of bowl cozies so buy wrap in zap by the bolt. My pellon wrap and zap recommends soaking batting and cotton in hot water for 20 min. Then patting dry (roll in towel) and hand dry to preshrink before cutting. I also use up my jelly roll scraps and sew strips to the size square I need. You could then quilt in the ditch your mini quilt sandwich. Other ideas for free motion quilting would to match theme of fabric such as spider web for Halloween. Fall leaves for fall, snow flakes, candy canes, flowers hearts. Endless possibilities.

I use a piece of low tacky painter’s tape to mark my stitching line across corner to corner. Stitch to one side and lift the tape and reposition the tape to the other cross corner. The cotton sticks to the tape the first time but won’t distort the batting if you prefer to stitch batting on top. I do because the fluff stays away from feed dogs. That batting can ruin a nice walking foot with fluff.

Rayna, re-watch the chapter on darts (in the description there are links that can take you directly to the section on darts (00:15:30 min mark), where I go over the math for a 10" square. In there I'm going an inch on either side of the half-way point for the dart, which should still be fine for an 11" square, and then I'm going down 2". That should all be good for an 11" template too. Take care & thanks for watching.

I have made a ton of bowl cozies and broke some needles I cut my batting shorter than the fabric bout a half inch that works for me I like the idea of using a walking foot haven’t seen that before
@WendyJHaney2 жыл бұрын
We each find what works for us. 🙂 And if you have enough stitches in the quilting, the batting should still place in place well. Breaking a needle stinks!

I can’t “walk” my computerized sewing machine needle through the thick corners so I use my vintage mechanical machine for this project.

Wouldn’t fabric glue or spray adhesives leave residue? And I just made twenty of these without a walking foot for making the Xes in the fabric-to-batting squares. It worked fine. But I forgot all about my walking foot! I’ll really need it for the next steps! I think I’m going to switch to my walking foot for sewing the two fabric and batting squares together, and then doing top stitching around the bowl cozy edges.

I'm assuming I mentioned the glue/spray adhesive when it comes to quilting. I agree... I prefer NOT to use it, others recommend the spray adhesive and lot iit. Yea, no need for a walking foot!! All depends on your machine as to whether it's a struggle with all the layers or not. You do what works for you!! Thanks so much for watching!

@@WendyJHaney I’m wanting to upgrade but not for sure which sewing machine would be the best one. I would like one that has the needle threader that is easy to use, automatic cutter, easy drop in bobbin

Hopefully you have a local sewing machine dealer somewhat close that can help you out. I live out in rural MN so for me one key point was picking a machine that I had a local dealer to service the brand. I do love my Baby Lock machines, but I get it, the price point doesn't work for everyone. When I went looking for a new machine (an upgrade from a simple Singer) I started researching options online and made a list of Must Haves and Nice to Haves. Then, decide on what you are able to afford/willing to spend. Now it's time to go talk to the experts. Be honest with them and don't let them push you into a machine that is more than what you want to spend or need or is so complicated you'll become frustrated with it. Hope that helps!!

I find that the fabric sticks to the batting, so it doesn’t move when sewing.

Are these reversible? If so, the next time you add/update the video, you might want to demonstrate that. Great video!

Right! I hate spray adhesive for anything personally.

Thanks for this video! Just curious - Do you soak your wrap & zap as the directions recommend? I really want to skip that step - I do always wash and iron my fabric first.
@WendyJHaney2 жыл бұрын
My instructions on the package did not indicate I need to pre-wash it. So no, I don't. Even if you're pre wash your fabric I don't think this is a big deal.

Thank you for reassuring me I can skip the spray (to me that just sounds like unnecessary chemicals and money spent). I don't have a walking foot yet so will try with a regular foot for now.

Thank you Wendy I really enjoyed your tips on bowl cozies! What kind of sewing machine do you have? I have the Babylock Unity
@WendyJHaney2 жыл бұрын
I have several. 🙂 I think the one I was using in the video was the Solaris 2, because I LOVE the automated walking foot on it!! That was a fairly recent purchase as I'm doing more embroidery and wanted a bigger hoop. My general sewing machine, which I've had for about 12 years is the Symphony. I LOVE my Baby Lock machines!! I have a longarm and another embroidery machine as well that are Baby Lock.

Hi Wendy, you said you use the micro needle but you didn't mention what size? would it be a #14?

Based on what's sitting new to my sewing machine right now.. I'd say a 90/14. :-)

Using 100% cotton.. should I be pre-washing the fabrics..
@WendyJHaney2 жыл бұрын
Not necessary, totally up to you. With a quilt, you get a bit of a pucker, old fashioned look after it's quilted. You might not want that with your bowl cozy, so pre-washing might be what you prefer. Give both a try and see what you like after you washed them. Thanks for watching!

Thank you for your tutorial on the bowl cozy. My question is, when making a 12" or larger bowl, do you increase the size of the dart? Thank you. Nancy
@WendyJHaney3 жыл бұрын
Yes, you would. Let me get back to you on estimate of how much to increase for different sizes.
@WendyJHaney3 жыл бұрын
OK... I haven't tested these yet, but what I think would be appropriate based on various patterns I've seen, is to keep the width of the dart the same, but go down a 1/4" more for each additional inch you add to your square. In my video I'm working with a 10" square and going down 1-3/4", so if you cut a 12" square, go down an extra 1/2" in your dart (2.25"). Hope that helps!
@mist4926 Жыл бұрын
isnt it easier to just fold it in half then measure 1 inch from fold and 2 inches down along fold for the dart
