How to sew a mug rug: woven coasters from sweaters!

In keeping with my handmade gifts series, here is how to sew a mug rug. Wool sweaters are awesome things to refashion for your sewing projects, but if you do ever cut up an old sweater, you'll probably have some weird leftover scraps. This project is just for that moment, and this sewing tutorial is going to combine a little easy weaving to make our woven coasters. Vary the colors and order for different effects or just free style your weaving. Make up a set for your holiday decor or make a set for handmade teacher gifts or for a handmade stocking stuffer for a friend!

Elizabeth, those are too cute and would make awesome gifts! What a fun thing to do with scraps! Question, could you waterproof the fleece so that moisture wouldn't come thru either side to furnishings?

Thanks Myra. With wool, I think you're okay. I've been using mine for tea this week without a problem. While you can't really waterproof the fleece per se, you can back the bottoms with cork sheets. I've made coasters like that before (I want to say I found little squares of cork at Hobby Lobby), and you get the bonus benefit of them not slipping around on a table.
