How to sew buttonholes using your sewing machine! |

Sliding the button onto the buttonhole foot before you start sewing, tells your sewing machine how big/small to make the buttonhole! It does all the work for you. :)

The little lever she pulls down and pushes back is how the machine knows to come back to the start. Basically the machine goes in reverse pushing the fabric towards you then when it get to the top it comes back normally (feeding out the back of the machine) to finish the other side. I have a cheaper one that I got for 119 euros only and it haves this leg to not this big tho you can’t put the button in the plastic or pull the lever, but it haves another leg that is for buttons to. I am just limited by fabric and still waiting for mine to come 😅

It’s a regular everyday model Singer, absolutely nothing fancy about it. Probably would be your top choise if you were to look foa a modern but affortable machine, and where I live you can get them used for a fraction of the market price. The main flaw buying a used machine would be that not all default tools and parts might be included.

@@AammaK this machine is one of the singer heavy duty ones. it's around 350 to 450€, so it's definitely not affordable for everyone. a buttonhole foot is still a standard that comes with most machines; it just slightly differs in how it is used. (some aren't made to put the button in there)

A tip for when you rip the fabric for a buttonhole: go from both sides and end in the middle. That way you minimize the risk of ripping the stitches

Better tip. Use a seam ripper. It’s really easy to control how much you are cutting. And you use the tip of it to make sure you stop in the right place

Pro tip if your sewing machine doesn’t have this: you can use a zigzag stitch with the length at 0 and do the same thing- sew a little rectangle and cut the middle out

When I was learning to sew, all these buttonhole doodads either had not yet been invented or were not available to home semstresses. I had to learn to do it with just zigzag and a miniscule stitch length. All these tricks and tools make buttonholing look like a cinch!!

A tip for making the actual opening is to place a pin at the end so you don't rip through the stitching, because it will go straight on through lol.

There is a bar that you pull down that is in front if the sewing machine when you make the button hole. The bar will keep it from going any further than it needs to go and you don’t have to watch it

I think that part tends to vary on the machine. my old machine had something like that, but I have friends who's machines have nothing of the sort. my newer, much fancier Janome just stops when it detects it gets to the end and does a backstitch/endstitch automatically!

I used to have that same machine but it completely fell apart after a year. No repair shop would touch it, saying it’s meant to fall apart with plastic parts. They said if I was serious about sewing to buy a vintage machine with metal parts. I got a 120 year old machine and it’s never broken down.

You put the button in the foot so the machine knows how big to make the buttonhole. The foot has a piece sticking out that moves when the button is put on the foot, and that piece hits the lever and signals the machine to start the second half of the buttonhole!
