I just sewed that on the first try. I’ve sewn plenty of hems, with the standard foot (fold, iron, press, sew, repeat), but all the tutorials I’ve seen on these were so complicated that I didn’t really see the point… by the time I’d get it set up I could’ve gone through the whole routine I was used to. The tip about the fabric matching the bar and pre folding the fabric made the difference. Thanks!

Another option to starting is to sew 3-4 stitches on your fabric without folding it over, just flat on the sewing machine bed. Then lift your pressure foot and needle, pull the fabric back, and use both of your thread tails to manipulate the fabric into the scroll. Once it’s in the scroll correctly, just position the fabric under the foot at the beginning of the seam. The fabric, in my experience, needs to cover the left toe of the foot as you sew forward. These feet are amazing and provide wonderful results. The foot does the heavy lifting, but the preparation is key to success. Generally speaking, the bigger the scroll, the heavier the fabric that they can handle. I use the 6 mm one for flannel, but I’d never use a 3 mm one for flannel. It does take a bit of practice to get used to working with these types of feet, so test out on some 12-18 inch strips to learn. You can also sometimes start on a scrap or leader before moving onto your hem. I find that works as it gives me a little feeding space before the real hem starts. Almost any type of zig zag stitch will give a scalloped edge, especially if you adjust your tension and stitch length. I find the scallops more pronounced on knit fabrics than cotton. The wide opening in your foot gives you some needle position options. Play with those in combination with various stitch designs or patterns for some attractive finishes. One word of caution though, stitches that are stitched by moving forward and backward may not work because the hem behind the foot is already stitched down. Stitches that are executed from back to front will likely work best. Have fun. Thanks for posting this video.

I have first used rolled hems in very fine almost sheer crepe fabric. And I actually used sewing pins to gather the fabric around the cone and the guide and I use a pin to keep the start of the stitch in place, since it tends to unroll itself even if you press it. An awl is much easier for fabrics with more weight in them! Great video.

@@StephanieRubletz Thanks, it worked -- until I got to the corner of the square. It resisted going over the rolled turn, so I just took the roll out and completed to side. Then I started the new side. I did that for all for corners. Could you make a video showing what to do when you reach the end of the corner? It's probably obvious, but I'm overlooking it.

I always just do the first side then dinner press the next side including the roll. Then I put in my first few stitches with the finger pressed roll just sitting under the foot. I think this will prove extremely helpful. I have "spiny-roller" copied my SO's best shirt so I could alter it slightly and make as many as he wants (learning evil factory methods for this--soooo convenient). It has a rolled hem. I have struggled with the foot a few times in the past and given up and made a hand-rolled instead. I think I can do this now. I had no idea there were multiple sizes. Mine says "2" and it's like your 3mm with the curved needle space (what is the proper name for that?). Luckily it is the correct size for the shirt. The stiletto trick looks good to me, but this one is so narrow that I will be trying a tapestry needle instead. I'll let you know how it works out in the end. Thank you so much for the super close-ups. They are REALLY helpful in understanding the mechanism!

First...you did a lovely job teaching me how to do a proper rolled foot. Could you please show me how to do it for an apron strap? I'm having a hard time finishing the angled end. Thanks so much! ~ Michelle
@StephanieRubletz4 жыл бұрын
Hey Michelle, thanks for watching! Yes those 45 degree ends would be tricky. I think I would just do the looking edges first then fold the end by hand, pin then sew. Though truthfully I've only ever sewn apron straps with a front and back piece so the edges could be turned in.
@fuzzlekat3 жыл бұрын
Apron straps would be best when done with a binding foot. I got the best results when I put a vintage Singer low-shank binding foot in my 4-year-old machine. The foot was labeled 15/16 as the width you need to cut the fabric; KZbin tutorials assured me 1” would be fine. I didn’t have any luck until I cut the fabric 15/16” wide.

Yours is by far the most informative video I've seen on how to use a rolled hem foot. I liked and subscribed immediately. The other videos I watched previously showed someone feeding easily feeding the fabric into the foot and effortlessly sewing a perfect rolled hem. I was really excited until I tried it. I've been sewing for many years but my attempt was an ugly mess. I am grateful to you for explaining that doing rolled hems takes practice. Unfortunately, my practice hems are only looking slightly better so I'm a complete failure at this. I'm trying to hem an acetate lining on a wedding dress. It is medium weight, not super thin or slippery. My machine is an old Bernina 830 Record. I only have a 2 mm narrow hemmer foot. I'm wondering if I need a wider foot for this type of fabric? (When something goes wrong, always blame your tools.) I really wanted my foot to help me make the hem look professional but at this point, I'm probably going to have to pre-press and stitch the hem without the foot.
@StephanieRubletz2 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! You might be right and a larger rolled hem might be better. But at this point, do whatever is the least frustrating! If that means pressing and sewing or hand sewing, do that. There is already so much pressure in doing something like a wedding dress that it makes it really difficult to be patient with yourself throughout the learning process. So, get this done in whatever way will result in you not pulling out your hair and then when you have time, practice on a variety of fabrics. Then the next time you want to use it for a project you will have grown your skillset already. ❤️
@shellyscott82754 жыл бұрын

Okay my problem may be that I'm not folding over as the fabric is guided into the foot. I decided that my 30 year old hemmer foot needed to be replaced so as soon the new one arrives I'm going to try this technique. Thank you for the video.

Thank you for this video - it helps a lot. Is it possible for you to share how to do different fabrics such as chiffon and/or knits? I find these difficult fabrics at the best of time, but both lend themselves to a rolled hem treatment. Thank you - Julie

I have been thinking of doing a level 2 to this video (though it might not get into the que for a while). I'll definately add this into the program. Thank you!

I'm definitely not doing it the way you're doing it but I think I succeeded ?? I just am having a hard time controlling how wide I want the hem to be like at the beginning it's the width I chose by folding the fabric and then after going through the presser foot it's a narrow hem. Also my way of holding the fabric to make sure it keeps feeding into the foot is way more chaotic but it's starting to ressemble something... Practice makes perfect I guess...

Nice! I always say practice makes "proficient" take perfect out of the equation and things are so much easier.
