Learn a five-step shading process that can be used to shade any subject, from simple objects like a sphere to complex subjects like the human figure. The process starts by dividing light from shadow using the line of termination and darkening all shadow areas to a number three value. It then progresses to darkening the core shadow, refining the values, and adding highlights.

I saw this exact tutorial like approximately few months ago and I just cant thank you enough, I am an artist in digital for around 4-5 years (2024 will mark my 5th year) and this exact shading tutorial just altered my art COMPLETELY. Really I cant, I watched so many tutorials for so many years and this simple 40min shading guide just covering all of that I learned on previously, this tutorial is truthly lifechanging and every, EVERY artist that I will come across in future, Ill send them this if either they struggle with shading or in general need help with art. Its mind boggling how you share this knowlege for free and Im VERY thankfull for that Brent, you are a hero.

I have made a really good progress regarding proportions, shapes, outlines, but when it comes to shading I’m always lost, I’m learning how to tattoo and I know the shading is key to stand out, this is the first time I actually understood how to make a plan and how to develop it. I’m going to try it out in my own drawings. Thank you so much

A fascinating and immensely helpful technique for drawing shadows. Your method helps students get right in there. So many are put off by the long structured courses that emphasise stuff like understanding light, form, and anatomy, as well as a meticulous approach to observation and rendering. All necessary stuff eventually but this allows them to dive right in and still produce good results and hopefully get addicted to art.

This is very good. I am taking it forward from the very basic technique I learned from TV modules by an artist called Jon Gnagy, must be over 60 years ago when I was in grade school. That understanding still holds good, but this is far more developed. I always thought I would go back to this when I finally retired from a lifetime of work, and here is all this great instruction on the internet I could never have anticipated, just waiting for me. It is a great pleasure and satisfaction to round out this interest that got lost somewhere in childhood. The kid had some little bit of talent, which is still in there, and now lots of time to play and satisfy the urge to create. Many thanks!

Thank you for making such a concise guide and sharing your process for free here! If you happen to read this comment, I'd love if you could clarify any further on the placement of the reflected light vs. cast shadow under the armpit. I would have expected the reflected diffuse light from yhe ground to light up the cast shadow under the armpit if it tis lighting up the area just next to it. Undoubtedly your choice of putting a cast shadow there helps communicate the overall values in the drawing- but is this more of an occlusion shadow?

Your shading is absolutely stunning. The tutorial is cohesive and accurate. However, can you share what types of pencils do you use? Is it graphite, charcoal or …? 🥲🥲🥲

What would you use to blend graphite? Paintbrushes, blending stumps, tissues, etc. or not using a tool to blend is better?
@evolveyourart
@evolveyourart 11 ай бұрын
I’m not really a fan of “blending:” in drawing. Blending unless done by an expert tends to look sloppy and ruins the clear divisions between values. But this is a personal opinion. As always, experiment to see what works for you!

Finally, there are western drawing tutorials that actually focus on academic art and high quality education. The western art community very much lacks academic training. Thank you!

I might be missing something, but a lot of great artist I like draw with no terminator shadow or a very subtle one. And Im sure they are very professional. May be there are some situations where it can be dropped or is it a style choice?

this is a very useful tutorial with a clear explanation of the fundamental shading basics but for me it's kinda feel like that "how to draw an owl" meme i understand that all that happened in "step 5" was just a refinement, and yet i feel that a speed paint with some commentaries would help a lot more than a fading transition (ps and sorry if it sounds like gibberish. english is not my native language)

This was really helpful, all the 4 videos were. I used in one of my digital drawings and it turned out so nice that I almost cried lol. But I have a question, in traditional what pencil should I use to do the shading? I doubt it's the hard ones like HB, so which one should I use?

You can definitely use an HB to shade the lights on white paper. I think the best way to find out which pencil to use is to get a bunch of them and find out which grades you like to use the most.

Hi, Brent. I was just looking at your Udemy courses. Can you please let me know if those are the most up-to-date ones you have done on shading. Or if you have a more comprehensive course from beginner to advance level elsewhere. You are the only art instructor I could find with an online course dedicated to shading and I am really interested in doing a paid and properly structured and complete course on the subject.

Hello. The courses on my website (www.brenteviston.com/learn-to-draw) have been updated and redesigned as well as remastered for better sound and picture quality as the videos on Udemy, although the instructional content is largely the same. Please let me know if you have any other questions.
