Reshaping that handle raised the level of the saw from factory to custom. Nice!

There is no right no way to shape the saw handle, but there certainly is a Wright way to do it!

I got the pax dovetail saw for xmas, theyre a great choice. Sharp and set out of the box is smooth, good heft to it too. Lynx saws are good, just need a little tuning, not a ton but tenon saw i got works well.

Before I learned about antique tool collectors' clubs as a source of fine old user tools, I ordered a mail order PAX saw. After a few cuts I set it aside and eventually sold it for $5. As your whole video suggests, the factory handle was designed by an accountant but I quit using it before it generated blisters. Boiled linseed oil is even better for tool handles when gently melted 50/50 with beeswax. You've done a real service by encouraging people to fit tools to their own hand and demonstrating the techniques. After 45 years in the shop, I'd never considered a bow sander. I look forward to making and using one. Thank you.

James, you always make shaping and carving look so easy and fun to do! I’m hoping one of these days-years-it will be as easy and fun for me. I really appreciate your instruction and your example. And great job on the handle!

Thanks. It is a skill but one that is fairly easy to pick up as long as you take it slowly.

Really beautiful work, James! 😃 Yeah, it needs to be comfortable, otherwise you just won't use it. 😉 Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊

My favorite is the E. A. Berg bolt cutter. I am a hand tool woodworker and I have found the best chisels and plane blades come from E. A Berg in Eskilstuna Sweden. They sharpen beautifully and come to a mirror finish with proper sharpening and result in a very smooth finish. If you come into any plane blades or chisels from Berg that you don't need let me know. Nice haul by the way, thanks for another fun video.

Hey James, nice work. I did this to an old saw with a beech Handel a year ago or so. It is something I enjoy a lot. I got started making handles after I watch you make a tote for a plane. I have now made several plane totes and knobs. I would like you to make a plane knob on your lathe. I just keep getting old saw planes etc for restoration and I don’t even buy them. People drive them to my house and unload them in my garage. I can’t seem to throw them out. I have made some knobs and totes that have turned out great and some that I threw away. I guess I’m looking for a more systematic approach. I make these things by hand as you do but I’d really like to watch how you drill the holes for the knob.

Here's a video on making a plane knob without a lathe. I generally try to use the lathe but every now and then I like to just freehand it. kzbin.info/www/bejne/g5LdgnaHdryBiMk

Thanks James! This gives me a lot more confidence to purchase less costly saws! I’ve got small hands, and the bulky saw handles are always uncomfortable. I like the Veritas a lot, but like you I’ve been wanting a heavier saw for some work. Gotta love Taylor Tools! I think they have such good quality at decent prices. With great folks, even! Hope you and the family are staying well! Take care.

Ya I find myself going back there as he has an eye for tools that have that great balance of quality and price. not the best tools on the market but the ones that will do the work with out breaking the bank.

Hey, James. I love watching both of your channels, especially the more educational/tutorial videos. I was trying to do some research on saws, could you possibly measure the thickness of the plates of a number of your saws vintage and new, large 26 in. Handsaws to small dovetail saws and publish the resulting information?

Nice video thanks.... Curious, have you ever made a replacement handle for an older saw with a broken handle....? If so would love to see it, I have an old diston that I need to repair/replace the handle...

I have made several, but I don't think I have a video on it. I have videos on repairing them and I have videos on plane totes but I don't think saw handles. I should do that.

I have a bunch of files/rasps without handles. I'm considering making handles out of rare hardwoods. But I don't have a lathe. I think handles will be easy enough; even chisel-type handles can be done starting with squares. What do you think?
@WoodByWrightHowTo
@WoodByWrightHowTo 3 жыл бұрын
If I make a handle I generally prefer it to be octagonal. but if you want round it is not hard to do that with out a lathe. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gYTViKKheJ2qd6c

Great saws. They are a bit on the pricy side as you can get a folded back from a few other places for the same price, but they cut well and are very comfortable.

I'm going to have to do some digging on that. Tay tools is currently out of the one I bought from them. and the two other places I looked for are also out. The saws from links are almost the exact same thing I'm very similar quality and price range and those seem to be more available right now.

@@WoodByWrightHowTo Hi James, buying new tools seems to be a world wide problem at the moment. Here in the UK everyone seems to be awaiting stock, be it from the States, Canada even China. Must be Covid. Hopefully soon be under control, stay safe there and your family. Regards Jim UK.
