I am recently retired and happily getting back to pencil sketching after many years of absence. I found out I can still do a decent sketch and decided I'd paint a small mural on the end wall of my hall. WRONG! Despite watching hours of online painting videos, I can't grasp how to transpose a pencil sketch to a painted picture, whether on a wall or paper. I finally came across this video and am so excited! You speak in SIMPLE TERMS, all along explaining WHAT you are doing, WHY you are doing it, and what it WILL ACCOMPLISH. I've subscribed to your channel and can't wait to watch more of your videos. You've given new hope that I can save this project from the jaws of disappointing defeat. God bless you for sharing your talent, your gift and your experience...........(PS- DON"T STOP "TALKING TOO MUCH" as noted in another remark. Your verbal explanations are what makes your videos so excellent! "What, why and how" is the basis of all learning, and the more you explain, the better you impart your knowledge, especially to new enthusiasts. Less verbal explanation would make your videos like any other and take away what makes them special and more effective.)

Can I make a couple of suggestions? First, that you watch this video. The reason being, when you were painting the first rock addition, there were a couple of places where you could have left it. One being, at one point, you have a rock with a very flat, diagonal, surface. That would have been what I would call, a good sitting rock. Then, you changed it, and it had an indent in it. It looked like a rod had been forced through it, similar to what you might see when they are separating granite, or, marble. Then, you changed it. The change was good, but, before the changes was good, too. I know that you are very busy and probably don't have time to watch your own videos, but, I thought I would make the suggestion that you watch this one. Perhaps you could use those rock ideas somewhere else.

When it comes to blending you mentioned always having a wet brush and lots of paint on the wall. I noticed you sometimes also have a dry brush to soften edges. Is that another method you use a lot?

How do you paint objects transparent or glass like that typically are not transparent. For example, how would you paint animals or creatures to look transparent or glass like? Know More Nothing, I have the same issue. I think lots of Artists do, however I don't think Joe knows exactly what it will be. He starts out with a blob and it evolves. It just takes imagination. You just need a general idea and let it evolve.

Tamara Figge ive tried tutorials.Hundreds of hours of youtube videos on drawing. Practiced thousand and thousands of sketches. For example i will redraw a figure several hundred times in every position and angle. Yet i still cant draw anything freehanded that resembles a figure/person or object. i spend 4 hrs everyday,8 hrs a day on weekend and 14 hrs a day on my days off just drawing. i will draw a circle,rectangle or other shape thousands of times within a week. then i will shade all of them from all 360 degrees of light sources. They say practice improves your skill yet ive been stuck at inability to draw freehand. its like my brain gets overwhelmed with all the information. when i go to draw as soon as i focus on the paper to draw whatever i see in my mind disappears. If i trace outlines i can shade a drawing in hyper realism. I remember in high school most of the class who never even drew before ended up drawing better than me by end of the semester even though i had 10-12 years of practice. how am i to improve my drawing ability if i forget what i learn the next day? even if i repeat the process thousands of times. I started doing art again recently and i gave up a year ago becauae i felt like im getting no where. my freehand drawing ability is equal to that of a 10 yr old. Even if i have a reference photo i cant freehand draw it. as soon as i look away i forget what im looking at within a fraction of a second. it feels like everyone else has some magical talent that allows them to see things in their head and put it on paper.even people who have never drawn seem amazing to me when they do a sketch. is there something wrong with me?

I'm not a pro or even intermediate but I can advice you to forget about theory when you try to place your thoughts onto paper. Make a scetch and then use it as a reference for your drawing but with applied theory. @ And have less self-criticism.

"you speek to much". You are SO WRONG! His verbal explanations set his videos apart from all the others and make them special and much more effective. Perhaps you are a gifted artist who doesn't need to hear the "what and why" of each detail. Those of us who are beginners or are struggling NEED and APPRECIATE and THIRST for the verbal instructions.
