Genuineness & simplicity! People can tell if you’re being annoying or actually being a hopeful witness to Jesus and His Church. And it doesn’t have to always start explicitly religious. Just be real with people and they’ll tend to open up
@joaomarcostorres94574 жыл бұрын
That’s it! We, as catholics, need to know how to actually be an interesting person, and know how talk about other subjects! Eventually, that person will open up to deeper subjects (such as the “meaning” of things, or straight up religion). But, its also always good to remember that you have to be GENUINELY interested in that person as a HUMAN BEING, and not as your “project”, or merely a subject of your “evangelization”.

I went from being a stauch atheist to a believer in Christ because a Christian simply (and humbly) asked me why I didn't believe in God. Questions are powerful!
@TrumpeterOnFire4 жыл бұрын
I really needed this today Father Mike. I'm not a Catholic(at least not yet), but I've been questioning my beliefs for a long time and have been through a long "Dark Night of the Soul" period in my life for a very long time. I was raised protestant, first in a Presbyterian church and then baptized in a Lutheran church. I was very involved at that time, until I saw a bit of "the sausage being made" and I knew something was wrong. I take 1 Peter 3:15 seriously, and I could not in good conscience continue to practice Christianity the way I had been, because I could not make a defense for the things being accepted, acclaimed, and taught by the church. Since then, nearly 10 years now, I've been wrestling with this. If I am to be held to account for what I believe and why, I need to make a firm case, and it's not easy, because, as many Catholics have said, if you're a protestant who rejects the authority of the Catholic church, you have to make that account without relying on Catholic teaching if it is not authoritative. I am not Catholic, so I can't do that. However, the flip side of the token, if I decide to become Catholic, I have to be held to account for that decision also, I can't just use that as a "get out of jail free" card for not having a defense for what I believe. I find myself feeling alone in this struggle, for a host of reasons. It's difficult. A little over a year ago now, I realized that while I was capable of critiquing many of the different aspects of the common practices of Christianity in the protestant traditions, I wasn't particularly well educated about the Orthodox or Catholic teachings. I've been reading, listening to, and praying for wisdom and understanding with respect to Catholic teaching very seriously since then. As a result of this study and prayer, more recently I have found myself in conversations with my family where I try to share either my current struggle to understand these things, why I am struggling, trying to discern what the Scripture teaches, or explain some of the things that I am convicted about with respect. It has led to tension. It has made me feel more alone when I am trying to share either my current understanding or my struggle with understanding, and be left rejected and dismissed. I know I am not perfect, and that I shoulder the responsibility to speak the truth in love, and to honor my father and mother. I will meditate on what you've said here and pray for guidance. Thank you and god bless.

Sometimes it is hard since we have our" ego" that is altered , yet we should forget about it , be humble, merciful and loving. Just a smile can make a huge difference and the wickedness displayed will be overcome and Satan won't have to rejoice for his defeat. Amen!

I can relate to this because my friend's sister, a few years ago, used to get drunk all the time and has even had to go to the hospital on a few occasions. I told her about God's word and how he does not want us to get drunk but I explained that when God has a law, there is a reason. Sometimes the reason may not be clear, and in such cases, it's not an excuse for not following it, but the reason is there nonetheless. I told her that God loves her and would not want her to die or lose out on her relationships with other people because she doesn't want to stop drinking so much. I told her though that God loves her no matter what, and whether drinking is a sin or not, or whether she chooses to stop or not, God will still love her and I hold out hope that God has mercy and would grant her grace even though she sinned because God has that power. Shortly after that, she stopped drinking. I'm not sure if it's because what I said to her, or if she just stopped by herself, but I believe that's the way to share God's word. Because if you just say, "God said not to get drunk" then there's a chance it won't work; that's how you get people to say, "Oh then the bible is fake, I'll do whatever I want."

I'm a convert to Catholicism. Thanks for the video. I do think the tips here are good on starting with questions and caring about the answer, but I disagree with the premise that there has to be an author for there to be meaning. That kind of tactic would not have worked with me, because I still see the premise as incorrect, even now. However, I do think asking questions will allow us to understand more about the person, and see if that person is open to the Gospel, and in what ways.

YES. Pastor Mike Schmitz THIS is soooo valuable nowadays, honestly pleasee make a video on when we are expected to correct others (and the relationship for that). It is especially relevant to me as a uni student going into a society rife with sin (e.g. promoting promoting culture, getting drunk, etc.) We need to be more open and less prickly to unbelievers - of course don't sugar coat the truth, BUT, it is only by loving an unbeliever that the unbeliever will see that there is something different within the Christian than everyone else (the Holy Spirit). - it is the Holy Spirit that should nudge us and tell us when the right opportunity arises. Forcing/impsoikg your Christian faith on others will only but harden their hearts to Christ. "Love one another, and by this the world will know you are my disciples" - this is His instruction to us. Preaching takes a whole new dimension - it seems much more real and tangible - when the believer sees that it actually had a massive impact in our life (and that our life orbits around Him). It no longer stays as some dusty theology, but becomes much more real and valuable. I talk from experience because despite growing in a Catholic household all my life, I remained agnostic/atheist until only ~3 years ago. As said, there is a time and place for correction - but evangelism doesn't pivot on that. As young Christian I see many people walked away from God based on misrepresentation of Him (by some jusgemental/insensitive Christian who forgot to take the log out of his own eye). People will judge God based on the behaviour of Christians (the bible says we are God's Ambassadors), and any bad behaviour on our part as Christians might harden somebody's heart to receiving Christ and their salvation.
@icarus64924 жыл бұрын
This reminds me of how St Paul was walking through the greek gods statues and there's an empty altar with the label "for an unknown god". And st paul starts the conversation with "I admire how devoted you are to your gods, until you even have a pedestal for a god you don't know yet" and then he explained how that unknown god they were looking for was Jesus. He built that rapport before preaching. If today's preachers were in his place, they would've started with "your gods are all false!". That invites conflict and the audience ends up hating the preacher even more, which somehow makes the preacher feel more validated than before. That's just a dangerous way to evangelize in my opinion. So yeah. Preach with love, and if the opportunity comes, use words.
@PlatypusPvP4 жыл бұрын
Absolutely, we should preach with love. We also need to remember that one of the most loving things is sharing the gospel. Paul says in Romans that faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ. People need to hear the message, God uses us to speak his message and we have to faithfully speak it while trusting that the Holy Spirit will spark faith in their hearts! These preachers you are talking about are your brothers and sisters in Christ, just remember that many of them are being hated because Jesus said the world will hate us since they hated him.

This perspective reminds me of a statement I read from a Christian woman recalling a time when she attended a sex talk at her congregation. She said that there were plenty of people there, but the questions at the end revolved around LGBTQ issues, and she was disappointed that the majority of those questions were "should I attend a wedding/pride event" or "should I bake a cake" instead of questions such as "How do we help save, protect and provide for trafficked, exploited, homeless or suicidal LGBTQ individuals?" There's a reason Jesus elevates Truth and Love TOGETHER. Throwing all the things someone else is doing wrong in their face is no way to build genuine trust or friendship. There's a time and place for tough conversations and corrections, and they're bound to be doomed if they happen before that trust is established. Evangelization isn't about you, it's about who you're reaching. Thanks for this, Father Mike!

Josuzaki It is, but it’s not always appropriate depending on the situation. We’re called to bring people to Christ, which gives us all the more reason to be mindful of how we exemplify Christ to others. Don’t forsake correction and truth. Just bring it up when you’ve earned the right to and when it’s necessary to the situation.

Pope Benedict XVI cautioned us against Moralism which was reducing the Gospel to a code of ethics/morals. I appreciate this video because I think that we sometimes forget that. I think the best way to preach the gospel is to live it. Jesus said love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your mind, all your strength, and all your soul. To love our neighbor as ourself. No matter how complex the world is, what Jesus asks of us is very simple, to love God and others all we can. All the glory belongs to God. It's also good to know in those moments when someone comes with a question (or more likely objection), that having the answer doesn't get them converted. I've heard ministers ask "if I answer this question to your satisfaction, will you become a Christian?" The answer is generally, "no" indicating that the question is really just an excuse for the asker not to believe. Faithful sharing of faith also means leaving the result to the Holy Spirit. God bless us all as we keep trying.

I feel like there is a lot of people who make the mistake of thinking evangelization is trying to make someone see the truth instead of trying to help lead someone to the truth. I think it turns a lot of people away when fellow Christians or Catholics try and shove their beliefs down someone’s throat. I agree wholeheartedly with this video. It should be a conversation with both sides interested and caring about what the other person says. Not you have to believe what I believe. Yes, we want to help save our friends and family but trying to force them will only make them pull away farther. Also, some people simply don’t want to be saved. This is an important topic. It is not easy to engage in evangelization many times. There are obstacles outside of us and within us. It is an art that is dependent more than anything on the grace of God. We can very easily mess up and draw someone away from Jesus rather than attracting them to Him. Is there a good book that you would recommend? If you have the bandwidth please keep posting videos about this because I think it is one of the hardest and most important tasks we have as Christians.

At 33yo he was earning a good income, with no savings, no assets still living at home and not contributing to the house bills. I ended up correcting him and his parents. The parents had enabled his behaviour. I said to them, set him free, let him know he has 6 months to find somewhere to live and get help for his addiction. I told my friend his behaviour was self-destructive and hurtful to his parents, his fiancee, his friends and most of all himself, that if he didn't control it or seek help, he would start losing people close to him or damage the relationship beyond repair. I took him to the local Gamblers Anonymous chapter so he knew where to go for help. He didn't quit gambling or seek help. He asked me to get out of his life when I'd call. I prayed for him every day, and I asked Saint Maximilian Kolbe Patron Saint of Addiction to intercede for him. It got much worse, he had moved in with his fiancee but she broke off the engagement because his behaviour didn't change and he wouldn't attend Gamblers Anonymous or seek any professional help. His father died about a year after the intervention. I saw him at the funeral but didn't get to speak to him as he left mid-way, he wasn't at the wake. A few months after the funeral his mother rang to tell me that he had been going to Gamblers Anonymous from the day of his fathers funeral. Thank you Jesus, thank you Saint Maximilian Kolbe.

Evangelism only happens when there is authenticity and fails through superficiality. Thus, the inspiration of the Holy Spirit is the only way.

5:36.... This is a practical occurrence in our lives that relates highly to John 20:29, when Jesus the Christ's said to the Doubting Thomas many of us who are/were once cradle Catholics and all, '...Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed." I.e. Blessed are His people of Good Will (us), who do not SEE and ACT, not knowing what the heck is going to come of this seemingly blind but faithful ACT of Love through/with relationship. With ardor, if it comes down to et, just count down from 3 as Steve-o does, and also like Steve-o, don't back out! Let Him take the wheel with ardor, even if it's the one we didn't think about haha.

Hey, I'm sorry that that happens to you. That must be discouraging. It happens to me too sometimes. I would encourage you to just keep persevering in the faith. In those times when you get down, just ask Our Lady to help you give it to Jesus. Lay down your deflated spirits before Him, and ask Him to help you remember that He is still as close to you as when you could feel Him.

I think the problem is that most Catholics are not Biblically literate to present the Gospel and so they're afraid if they get confronted with rebuttals and questions they cannot answer. I think we Catholics need to experience Jesus directly by the power of the Holy Spirit and in light of His Word and the practical applications of the Catechism.

I don't believe people who don't practise what they preach. So I evangelize by living in love, charity, forgiveness, joy. Well, I really try :)

Sometimes I wonder if its being cowardly to not be up front with them though, even if it they don't want to hear what religious or even political people have to say, so both partners could consider their thoughts and words overtime.
