This is a great video, Sean. I always like watching how other people sharpen. The sharpening station also came out perfect too. Great job.

Nice video Sean. I need to get the coarse plate because starting a new chisel on anything finer takes forever. Thanks for sharing your method.

Thanks John. Yeah absolutely agree. For the price, the coarse stone is a good value. I had my original one for over 5 years granted I don't sharpen as much as I should, it will last a while.

Great video Sean! This is pretty much how I sharpen now except for 2 differences. First, I use a very micro microbevel. Only like 1 or 2 degrees. You can do this easily with your honing guide setup. Just stick your ruler between the block and your blade (so if your primary is 25, put your ruler in front of the 25 degree block). And then just a really tiny bevel. The second is I reset the primary every time. With just a tiny microvevel, it only takes a dozen strokes on a 1k to erase it. This saves a lot of time later on with low grit medium. It's really easy to skew an edge on low grit meduim when you are at it for a while. That sharpening setup is super nice

Holy shit Joe, Resetting the primary every time is brilliant! No need to let the micro build up and have to use a coarse stone to reset it. I'm going to give this a try maybe after the second or third micro bevel honing. Thanks for the comment!

Hi Sean, thank you for the awesome video. I’ve been using Pfeil gouges for over 15 years and am considering buying theirs chisels. What’s your opinion on them? Hogs do they compare to other name brands?

I've not had time to really use them as I got them a few days ago. Follow me on Instagram @simplecove and DM me in a month and i'll let ya know once I have a little time to use them. So far they seem really nice from initial impressions. Especially for the price.

Curious about the LN guide. You mentioned it doesn’t do well w chisels that have a tapered thickness. I’m considering buying that jig but have several chisels that taper and wonder if it’s still doable or if it really doesnt do well with them at all??
@Simplecove
@Simplecove 3 жыл бұрын
Randy, I mentioned that it doesn't work well with tapered thicknesses because it doesn't work well with them. I wouldn't recommend something that doesn't work.

Hi. I thought that water stones needed to be soaked in water for a few hours before being used. Is that not correct? Thanks
@Simplecove
@Simplecove 4 жыл бұрын
Not all waterstones require soaking in water. The ceramic stones I use do not require soaking. Only water when using them.

Hey Sean, thank you for the clip, great stuff, as always. I am curious about your thoughts on LN honing guide, would you recommend it? Also, not sure if you are aware of it, there is some interesting audio around 2:07 :)

Hey Sean, I was wondering how well that cork is holding up?
@Simplecove
@Simplecove 4 жыл бұрын
The cork-rubber material is holding up well. It helps retain the water from getting through and hitting the top and is a softer surface to place the stones on.

While the ruler trick is worth it if you have an older, wavy plane blade (or cheap, new iron), I'm not a fan of it for good, new blades. Once you do it, you are stuck doing it forever, since you need to re-polish it (nearly) every time you sharpen, while polishing the back is one-and-done, and it isn't that much of an issue with new, well-machined irons.
@Simplecove
@Simplecove 4 жыл бұрын
Just a personal preference, I guess. While I am stuck doing it forever, i'm only doing it on my highest grit stone and even then i'm only doing a swipe or two to remove the burr. I really don't see a downside to it, only an upside if the blade isn't perfectly flat. But again, these are all just personal preferences.

Great video on sharpening. At the end of you vide, I see that you laid your plane on the face. My German born step-granddad would have my hide if I did that to one of his...always lay it on the side...(but you probably know that..).
@Simplecove
@Simplecove 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. I laid it on shavings which raised it but I see no reason to lay it on its side. I understand that's what they did back in the day but if you're careful when you lay it down and keep a clean bench, it's not going to hurt the blade. My bench is wood after all.
