How to sharpen a hand saw | quick and simple for cross cut and rip cut

In this video I show how to sharpen a hand saw, both cross cut and rip cut. Using just a cheap small file and a scrap of wood, its possible to revive a saw that takes a little more effort than it used to!
This really isn't as complex as might seem, and once you've had a go, you'll never have a blunt saw again!

You may want to take a listen back to your audio-I think there are a couple of places where you mean to say ripsaw and say crosscut, or vice-versa. Always a pain when trying to cut with a blunt saw. If ever I buy one of those expensive Japanese saw's I'm for sure going to learn how to do this to keep them sharp!

@@AdrianLussier the only other way I can think of would be an Emery file (for finger nails) but you’d go through hundreds.

Never pull a high quality file backwards. The sound alone should be enough lol but seriously there made to cut on the push and will dull so fast pulled backwards. The China files are junk gonna dull fast anyway. But an old German or American made file will last a lifetime as long as you don't pull them backwards. Otherwise good job

That seems to be not the hardest to learn. Should also work quite similar for bandsaw blades.

I like your video. It's a good demonstration of handsaw sharpening. What about when the tooth heights are uneven? Do you use a flat file to bring them all to the same height?

If you know or want to level off the teeth, go ahead. I very rarely do that to my saws and have little issues. This is a video to get people to use a sharp saw quickly and easily, without all the minutiae that seems to come along with the supposed mystical art of sharpening!

Not a very good way to sharpen a saw you need to joint the teeth your file was to small. Ps am 40 years cabinet maker

I know there are proper files to own, but this was taller than the the teeth, and something most workshops will have in. Saw are often the last thing people sharpen because they’re scared and thing it’s difficult

You really can’t, just go to harbor freight and get some cheap files for like 5 bucks. If they get clogged run a brush through the teeth and you’ll be golden.
