Very informative! I liked how you restored the saw. I’ll add one thing that I got from a woodworking book by a famous woodworker: If you have a dull handsaw, instead of sharpening it at the correct angle, instead file all the teeth straight across at 90°, same as an old-fashioned ripsaw and it will actually cut faster than it did before through wood. I tried this on an old saw and it worked. Also, when you clamp blade between two pieces of wood clamp them along the bottom of the teeth so the file actually makes a mark on the wood as you pass it through the teeth that way you know where you’ve been and don’t have to make pencil marks. Your saw of course has multi-edged cutting teeth so you wouldn’t do that angle.

Thanks for sharing such a detailed tip! That method of filing at 90° sounds effective, especially for ripsaws. I’ll have to try the clamping technique you mentioned. Great insight!

Throw it in white vinegar(submerge) leave it and forget about for a day or two. I dont care how rusted it is your gonna be surprised. Tools etc... and why youve forgot the tool in the vinegar stop by a harbour freight and buy a saw sharpener for 6.99. While i applaud your tenacity and old school methods i cant help but wonder 1. Do you have a job. 2. I seen the wood you went thru to find the saw are you a carpenter? 3 If you are, then you know it would be very rare to be able to take that kind of time to restore it. Again I admire the methodology the precision and the fortitude. The fact that maybe thats the only saw you have and you live deep in the Sahara desert, the practacality is beyond over the top. Thank you for all your effort my friend. From a Handy Man.

@@creationholic101. They are called a “feather file”…it is a very narrow, flattened diamond shape. A feather file makes it possible to get in between the teeth and achieve the proper angle on the tooth. While I have used them to sharpen my tri-cut saws (I’m an arborist) it is EXTREMELY difficult to return the blade to factory sharpness. And, for many models of tri-cut saws, the relatively low cost of blades does not make it worth the time, effort and frustration of sharpening only to have mediocre results….just buy a new blade when the old one gets dull

Actually it didn't matter what was it about. The nice clean work and the camera work was enjoyable with good sense of timing. More like an art Btw, at age 62, I just made my very first saw sharpening ever yesterday. Maybe that's why I got you in my recommended, for I had to watch instructions. It was an unexpected success. No joke. With my new small electric chainsaw I hit a nail I didn't see. Went dull immediately. Following the tutorial, it started cutting better than it was new. Is this possible? Really, it cuts faster and easier and leaves nicer chips. Anyway, thanks for the vid I do have an old handsaw but no lime

I'm hooked, awesome video about a simple task most run of the mill men love to learn. There are always different ways to accomplish the same task, and I love seeing how creative others are in fixing things with everyday tools we all have laying around. Look around your shop boys, how many gizmos do you have to fix your stuff taking up space? Can't even find the tool it fixes they take up so much room. You know what I mean . . . . Remco 497 . . . but WAIT . . . pay an extra $4.99 and we'll send you 20 more for 'free' kind of crap. I guess I'm becoming a grouchy older man who is fond of plain speaking and doesn't pay for free stuff. This is one of those chores a man likes to do in his shop on ANY day he can be left alone. A beer, the game or some music, maybe complete and total silence. I have several of these and find myself moaning when using them saying I need to figure out how to clean these up and sharpen them. We're so busy, we just buy another and stack it with the rest when the moaning becomes audible. Problem is, each additional purchase gets you something FAR worse and made to eventually fail so you trash it and purchase another. I am going to pull out my oldies but goodies and get them BACK to when America took pride in the products they engineered to last. A little TLC gets them right back where they need to be to do their best work. Back then, they were sold to be your only purchase. Why do you think antique shopping and reselling is so popular? I like it to marvel at the craftmanship before DeWalt. I LOVE this, it's a big FORK YOU to corporate snobs pushing offshored products that cannot stand up to the ultimate judge; Time. ALL we have to figure out on this deal is how to make a 7 set of forks look like 8 to the lady of the house.

My Jameson Barracuda Tri-Cut Blade in a pruning saw lasted close to 10 years without sharpening using it a couple hours a week. It is very hard. If you feel you must sharpen, it a feather file may work much better than a triangle file. Knocking the rust off with lemon juice (acid) is fine. A buffer wheel with rouge is fine.

Nice vid. I don't know about the fork though, a saw set for the teeth is exact, rather than guessing. Do some more vids please.

Thanks for the feedback! I’ll consider using a saw set in future videos and will definitely work on more content.

I actually thought it was a good idea. Having left a couple of long tines allowed the all set to be fairly close in angle. Good!

Not the way to use a saw or a file. Poor form . It appears to be a PULL cut saw but you are trying to cut both directions. Also why only use a few teeth near the middle? What are the other ones for? And when you are using a file it cuts on the push stroke; why drag teeth backwards over work. Lift it slightly and save the tool. SMH

You can get charcoal from hardware stores or online. If you need to make it yourself, you would typically need to burn wood.
