Hey, Dave I’m a fanatic with sharpening and I just want to say that your way is a good well thought out common sense approach. Very simple and effective. I especially like that you advocate low angle stropping as stropping will always increase the apex angle if you strop at the same angle as grinding on the stone. Glad to see your channel has grown so much over the years.

Yet an other way to sharpen a knife LOVE IT. There are so many options and I (for thew most part) have a equally basic approach. On huge advantage is, that you seem to have many vintage folder which typically have a very thin groun blade which makes them hella slicy. I do certanly know that changing a working method seems weird, but I might have one tiny trick for you. Try running your blade across the grain of some would (any would, realy) after you finished you work on the stone. that will save you some time on the strom since it will already remove a majority of the burr. Loved watching the video though. Stay sharp, Marvin

Nice advice! One thing I would add, and you showed it in the video but I didn't hear you mention it. When drawing your knife across the stone(or whatever you use) gradually pull the blade toward you, so you end at the tip, rather than just drawing it straight across. This should help ensure you don't have any flat spots and get an even cutting edge from base to tip. For the strop, you can also use any rubbing and polishing compound on each side, which can be bought at almost all hardware or automotive stores as well. Any old leather belt or even denim can work for a strop, if that's all you have available.

So it's all about the edge you want. If you push the blade straight into the stone you get a rougher edge, what are you looking for? Camp knife, hatchet or straight razor, all different. Enjoy it. Form your own style.

Good concise video on knife sharpening. Word of caution on anytime you use pb blaster. Find and read the MDS, materiel data safety sheet (not the label on the can) for pb blaster. Ever feel a little ill, nauseous after useing it ? Do not come into contact with the fluid, or breath the vapor. Its some tough stuff. Works well if used corectly and safely. Never use it as lube when drilling metal. Ask me how I know.
