I learned a cool trick from Kyle Noseworthy, another knife guy on KZbin. Take some wet-dry sandpaper and wrap it around a wooden dowel. The size can differ depending on the size of the curve in the blade. You can staple the sandpaper to the wood to make it stay tight. Nice vid! God bless!!

Can you tell me something specific for sharpening curve knife???? Something for dull knife or damaged blade and something for polishing.. thanks
@mouseutopiadystopia246012 ай бұрын
Do you mean a regular curve vs a recurve? Obviously, everything in this video pertains to recurve. For a regular curve, sharpen like a straight blade, but work in sections. For a damaged blade, use a lower grit stone (100-400) to reestablish the bevel. Then, use a higher grit stone (400-1000) to sharpen. For polishing, you can use 1000-2000 grit stone/sandpaper.

I use sand paper for scandis. It’s the only grind I use sand paper for. Mainly because I can put the paper on something flat and never have to worry about the stones cupping. A super flat surface is what your after. The flatter the better for scandis.

This is what I did for many years on the same knife haha. I liked the spartan for several reasons mainly just cool factor. I'd get another one but I got mine years ago for $40 brand new and recently I was in a pawn shop looking for a cheap concrete saw and they had a rajah 2 for forty bucks so I nabbed it. In all honesty using that thing to chop brush and sticks up can go to your head when your camping. Makes you feel like you have all power when you pull a huge folding kukri that opens on its own out of your pocket haha. Great vid
@OUTDOORS556 жыл бұрын
I like the spartan and actually carried it for a couple years. Decided to not carry it anymore due to weight. It is cool though! The huge folders are awesome. Especially if a particular state has weird laws saying fixed blades are out, but doesn’t have length limits on folders.
@r1w3d6 жыл бұрын
OUTDOORS55 California is weird that so many knives are restricted but you can carry any sized fixed blade on your belt openly. Can't wait to get back to the east coast where I'm from though so I can carry whatever I want👍
@OUTDOORS556 жыл бұрын
Maryland is the same as California weird laws. Unfortunately I am in Maryland a lot so it limits what I can carry ☹️ Oh well.
@r1w3d6 жыл бұрын
OUTDOORS55 I think some laws are just pretty dumb looked at from the outside. In Florida you can carry any knife you want unless it's an OTF and then you need a concealed weapons permit for it which is just strange to me. Yet in California if it's under two inches it's fine to carry just like a balisong/butterfly knife. I don't see why any knife is seen as more deadly than another other than something like a bayonet or dagger.
@OUTDOORS556 жыл бұрын
Yeah it doesn’t make sense. Automatic knives are pretty much illegal everywhere and the are no more dangerous than any other folder. Probably less so, as most of them have safeties that need to be switched off in order to open them. It’s stupid..

Using the edge pro stones (freehand) I can get a hair whittling edge. But if I use those norton stones it’s really hard to get that extremely sharp edge. I’ve made sure the stones are flat too. Any ideas?
@OUTDOORS556 жыл бұрын
The Norton stones are soft stones compared to the edge pro stones. Light pressure is best, and they do take longer to use/remove metal. They kinda take some practice on their own to use but once you get it they are awesome. I don't like the 220 grit Norton stone though. It works, but is too soft for a coarse stone, and hard work on the blade.

How useful are recurve blade, and what are they primarily used for? Are they up for many bushcraft/survival task? I think they are very pretty, would it be okay if i could only own/carry one type of knife which is a recurve? Good choice or bad? What are your thoughts as someone with much more experience using many different types of knifes?
@mutasimaldory2 жыл бұрын
Look up "kukri" or "khukuri" knives if you don't know what they are, they are the most spectacular type of recurve but if you go beyond the 'showy' or 'how they're made' videos and into the better-made, more knowledgeable ones on usage, they give you a scientific reason why a recurve blade is a much superior cutter..they are, however, much harder to make well and to sharpen properly & maintain, even down to how much more craft goes into making their scabbards or indeed how to sheath/unsheath them..! I must warn you though, it's an expensive rabbit hole to go down, you're gonna end up wanting to buy one or three! 🤣
@rontorrence79056 жыл бұрын
My Lansky system stones are only 1/2" wide. I don't use it, except for on recurves. I use them freehand, which is how my daddy taught me with a round whetstone about 9 or 10.

My grandfather could sharpen a dang cue ball. He taught me hand sharpening from about age 8. He carried a small ceramic rod in his pocket...everywhere. Honed CONSTANTLY...rarely sharpened. See this was back before super steels, as you know...the man HATED stainless. One of his tools was a 5 inch ceramic rod that was dipped in a glaze like a coffee cup...son of a biscuit eater! I MEAN STUPID razor edges on HC STEEL. I've got SCARS to prove it. Hence, I can hone your knife on a coffee cup too...LOL

Hey, Outdoors55 I have a suggestion for something you could test. Super cheap amazon diamond paste from the amazon seller TEEMO specifically. In Canada where I'm based, they sell the tubes of past for 7.50CAD so it's actually even cheaper to buy in Canada for some reason. Anyways what I do Is I take a piece of plate glass (I took one from my cabinet) then I take I tough old piece of denim I cut from an old pair of jeans and then I just stretch it across the glass and strop on it. I think you can also just replace sharpening stones with these which I'm going to try in the future by taking a piece of soft metal that's been flattened (cast iron works best but mild steel is good too) and then just scuffing it up slightly so there is some texture for the diamond to embed themselves in. I actually think it's a fantastic value and a really cheap method of sharpening that I discovered and tested myself. In fact, it worked so well I mirror polished my whole homemade knife that I made. Honestly I was really doubtful because I'd heard that cheap diamond pastes tend to have duper low concentration of actual diamonds but this stuff starts taking steel off so fast it's amazing. The 0.5 micron paste after stropping 10 times back in forth left the denim I was using black with metal shavings. The amazon link to the stuff is down below. www.amazon.com/TEMO-Diamond-Polishing-Lapping-Compound/dp/B004GTU0UQ/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8

I use sandpaper and my maths workbook to sharpen my spartan, it's easy, cheap and it gets you shaving sharp even with 1200 grit as the grit smooths out throughout the process. I got 180, 300, 500, 1200 and 2000 sandpaper for only 7.90, they don't last that long but it's still very cheap, i did like 12 sharpening and even the higher grits that I mostly use are still very usable.

Why are you using the long edge dude, the problems you mention don't come in to effect when you use the shorter edge, you can keep it curved with no ill effect on other blades. Either that or you take a hacksaw and cut half inch off the end of the stone. but i'd only do that if you need it for field use.

IF you can get these...the bulbs out of big street lights have some kind of filament rod inside them. Carefully break the glass bulb WITHOUT BREAKING THE QUARTZ (or whatever it is IDK??) Inside THE BULB. Remove the excess metal junk and those are EXCELLENT round honing rods. Wrap the bulb in a thin towel and break with a tap hammer or auto glass (orange) emergency hammer. The bulb will release gasses and shatter loudly...do this outdoors and be careful😃😃😃😃 This is not florecent btw.

Get a Spyderco TSM, round ceramics. Dmt serrated edge rat tails, sand paper, leather, dowel and compound. Done. The huge round crock sticks from SMKW work great for years and are cheap. They have a wooden handle. Clean your ceramics, and pretty much anything else but strops with Beekeepers Friend cleanser and a terricloth rag or green worn out kitchen scrubby or 3m pad. BKF is a finer abrasive than Comet cleanser. You can glue a thinner piece of leather around a wooden dowel, use Bark River black and green compounds.
