Haha it’s a weird concept, but by it figuring out the smoother and detailed parts, it can do a better job at isolating the detail and extracting it a little more, instead of just pushing everything more

Very good. You might want to use the Threshold's slider, press the dropdown arrow next to it. Then you can, I think, use the slider for a number higher than 0 and lower than 1 to add some of the blur but lessen the blur on the eyes. (My apologies if someone has already mentioned this technique in comments.)

This is very useful guys! Especially if you don’t have option to re shoot, this effect is a life saver. A bit interesting on the name though.. “unsharpen mask” to sharpen 😆 Thanks for sharing with us 👍🏻
@AlliandWill4 жыл бұрын
Haha it does have a strange name, but the idea is it creates a mask which keeps those areas unaffected, or ‘unsharp’ and everywhere else it does sharpen. It’s confusing, but gets the job done!

Getting it right in camera is important, and should always be the goal, but sometimes you're stuck with needing to use slightly out of focus footage because it would benefit the video. If re-shooting isn't an option, try this! In this video editing tutorial, Alli will teach you how to use the Unsharpen Mask in Premiere Pro CC to bring back as much detail as possible for slightly out of focus areas in your footage like the eyes of your subject. The result won't be perfect, but it will be better than simply applying the regular 'Sharpen' effect to your footage. Enjoy!

Thank you for shooting! What's the difference between this and the sharpen under the basic lumetri color (where you can slide it from -100 to 100)?

Threshold actually isn't just 0 or 1. If you open it so you can see the slider, you can then adjust exactly how much effect the threshold has. The number will only switch between 0 or 1, but that's just poor design from Adobe.

This is a great video! I'm confused why the effect is called "unsharp mask" If it's bringing sharpness back in? lol
@AlliandWill2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! The reason it's called 'unsharp mask' is because it only affects part of the frame; the technique uses a blurred or 'unsharp' version of the footage to create a mask. This allows certain areas to remain unchanged, while other areas are sharpened! Hope that helps!

What I'm confused about is that you seem to describe this as an effect that is centered on your face instead of the entire frame. And by "radius," is that to mean that the affected area is circular? I have seen other clips in which a target mark is placed onto the screen for controlling the location of various effects, but never a good explanation of how to activate, use and close that feature.
@AlliandWill Жыл бұрын
The effect used is different than the regular sharpen effect and only makes changes to certain areas of the frame, making it a good solution for this type of sharpening. I’d recommend testing it out yourself and experimenting with your own footage to get used to it 👍
