This is just amazing! I was recently trying to get into hand push engraving and working on watchmaker's lathe, finally got myself to get some cheap gravers for engraving and square stock to make lathe gravers but I clearly had no idea what I am getting myself into. Getting right degrees is impossible and if you're off they're useless, wasn't even able to work with them on annealed copper. I was looking exactly for something like the sharpener your presented

Cody, after watching your video about Worksharp’s knife sharpener I immediately ordered one from Amazon and now I have a drawer full of scary sharp knives. I then watched this video and read many of the comments. Tormek was mentioned several times; that’s a great system but entry cost is almost $500. For years I’ve used a bench grinder to throw an edge on turning tools and when a fine edge is needed i use a diamond coated sharpener. But for chisels and plane blades I use the Veritas sharpening guide and various abrasives (such as varying grits of quality sandpaper). To hone the edge I have a piece of leather coated with green polish compound (like what you used on the leather disc). When carving I frequently polish/hone the cutting edge to keep it razor sharp. No electricity required. I’ve used that scrap of leather for 20 years. And it only takes a few seconds. Sharpening turning tools is not difficult but takes practice. Once mastered the moves become automatic and don’t go away even when used only rarely. Your new sharpener won’t really help eliminate that learning process, I’m sorry to tell you. No tool will. Bottom line, IMHO, is that your sharpening system, at $185.00 is likely to disappoint folks who think it will bypass the need to acquire sharpening skills. Even if I got one for free I doubt I would ever use it. It’s no doubt useful to initially grind a flat square edge when you get a new chisel, plane, etc., but the same can be accompanied with the Veritas tool for well under half the cost. And I can’t stress the importance of investing in high quality tools. They last a lifetime. I really like the knife sharpener, though, and thank you for turning it on to me. Pardon the pun. Be well.

Cody what a great video and a very cool tool sharpener. I'm on the brink of ordering a Ken Onion knife & tool sharpener for starters, having watched your review. I love to hear you talk - reminds me of my childhood and people I used to know. And my late Dad and Grandpa. I miss this talk. These days I think a lot of these traditional masculine interests and the rituals around them (like tool sharpening) have been sadly almost lost. I know people in towns who live in apartments and have practically no way to make anything themselves and seemingly don't feel they need to. I need my workshop to make things from wood and metal and my mechanical tools for tinkering with motorbikes, cars and bicycles. Surfing on the computer or staring at your smartphone is very shallow in comparison in my opinion. I think your underlying spirituality, morals and beliefs are a foundation that provides stability and 'down-to-earthness' in the face of so many fads we are confronted with these days. Thank you for being the breath of fresh, sane air that you are. All the best to you and your lovely family. Rob, ex-pat in Switzerland.

I came to these in the reverse order. I’m a woodworker, and 5-6 years ago I started thinking about a slow grind system. Everyone uses the Tormek... but it was expensive, and I don’t like the idea of a hollow grind on the bevel side. I came across this and loved it. I only pull it out to remove chips or really worn edges, but it’s so much faster than trying to do it on diamond stones, and safer than a standard bench top grinder. The first time I went to their website to find extra disks, I saw the knife sharpener. I really like that too. It’s certainly good enough for my needs in sharpening. There are aftermarket grits up to 6k I think, and various in between those sold by worksharp. One tip to remove the sandpaper is to put the disk in the freezer overnight. It’ll pull right off and rarely leaves any adhesive behind. Like I said - most of the time, I just have a diamond plate and a set of water stones that I keep set up. But when it needs a little more, this thing is a time (and life) saver.

So many really great old tools have been dumped and lost forever because its to easy to buy new and good enough for one job tools very cheap! Keep searching, keep collecting, save every old tool you can, even if you will never use it, just preserve them!

Hi Cody, I got my work sharp from Axminster tools here in the UK, I was so pleased with it that I had a look at their site. On there I found a drill sharpening system and Have not needed to buy another drill bit since. Even if you snap a drill bit, and I have done that lots of times, as long as there is enough left you can return it to new or even better than new. if they are the USA dealers then they will have the drill bit sharpener as well and it is worth a look.

I've had my eye on this for quite some time now,it's on my want list of tools. As far as the "heat sink" you mentioned I can only fathom that it is made of a material that will draw the heat from the tool ro help keep the heat from possibly ruining the edge hardening, but that's just my guess as I do not own one yet. Thanks for the informative video Cody.

Thanks for the vid, very informative. Real quick tip on adhesive backed discs. I have noticed over time that when I peel the paper I tend to touch the outer edge and often deposit oil or other contaiminants to the edge and then it loosens or bucks up over time. With care I have figured out how to peel carefully and then touch the adhesive (during application) at least an inch IN from the outer edge. The benefit is that IF you are contaminating the adhesive it is surrounded on ALL sides by strong adhesive and not open to the edge. Make sense?

Awesome video. Been using the WS3000 for a few years. Tho it appears you're using the top of the wheel spinning into the blade. I'd recommend you use the other side of the wheel where the paper or leather is spinning away from the blade. One time with too steep an angle and you may cut into the wheel, potentially causing the knife to jump out of your hand.

I have an earlier model of the Work Sharp, and I cut part of the leather stropping plate by aiming the edge toward the leather. The instructions say to strop your tool with the cutting edge aimed away from the leather, kind of like dragging the cutting edge behind the blade. $30 dollars to replace the leather stropping plate convinced me to play by the manufacturer's rules. Oh yeah, you can also use 3-in-1 oil to keep the leather supple.

This looks like a great addition for a guy who simply wants to use his tools more than make sharpening his hobby as well. I think if you had more grits in between each step many of the fine scratches would be eliminated and I would also have flattened and polished the back again at each step as the coarse grit on the angled ramp is adding large scratches and still giving a slightly serrated edge. Great review though and I may look into one of these.

The tool described in the beginning of the video is a lapping sharpener-Was in a hospital lab and they used this device to sharpen microtome knives-these are used to cut tissue for microscope examination or other tests.Watching the microtome knife sharpener was interesting-the blade is put into an arm and holder that holds it against the glass lap charged with very fine abrasive paste-and then it flips the knife over for the other side. The hand lap shown is a similar device. Its interesting of the various sharpening tools!
