@@HairySand look at the woodturnerscatalog, they have a diagram of the setting for each grind, you down load it and set your jig to that angle.

Very useful and informative. Will the sharpening jig work with any grinder, or is there something special that is required? Also, you didn't mention the grit of the wheels. What grit wheel should I use. Thanks.
@gggbon
@gggbon 6 ай бұрын
It would have been useful if told the angle of the leg, not just the distance from the wheel (which is what the raptor gives). The wolverine jig has 3 adjustments (2 if you always keep the same projection distance). So instead of repeating several times the same thing (how to adjust the projection, take light touch), give the important information please (the other required adjustment)!

@jaysigel9837

I generally use a wet stone (oil or water) to sharpen my lathe knives and that works adequately. I've used the same oil stone for about 40 years. Looking at them recently, they're flat, not round. I assume there's a reason for that. Using a grinding wheel to sharpen lathe knives makes no sense (unless you plan to use the side of the wheel). That would grind in a concave shape to the knives' tips. Sure, you can get a very sharp edge, but you've lost some metal that you did not have to sacrifice in order to get that sharper edge and with it being thinner, they will get dull faster than the same sharp edge you could get by using a wet stone. Using a grinding wheel is way to aggressive and is a good way to quickly ruin a previously adequate knife. Using a belt-disc sander makes more sense and the exact angle can be set, if that's really important, by using any cheap, digital angle finder. A razor-sharp edge is not necessary and it will stay that sharp for only seconds after using it. After all, you are shaving wood, not your face.

Great video! I do have one question: what setting do you use on the vari-grind jig when sharpening spindle and bowl gouges? Thanks!
@CraftSuppliesUSA
@CraftSuppliesUSA 9 жыл бұрын
Mark Zaricor Set the control arm to 23 degrees and never move it again. We actually weld them at 23 degrees in our workshop program. Remember to use the 45 degree Raptor set-up tool on the spindle gouge and the 50 degree on the bowl gouge.
@markneurohr9663
@markneurohr9663 2 жыл бұрын
Question: If the jig is welded, doesn’t that limit the flexibility to have different grinds on like tools? Example: Two 3/8” spindle gouges. One with a fingernail grind. The other with a “pointed” detail grind for finials and tight details. I’m new to this and confused. Mark needs a class in Utah! 😎

What type of wheel is used in this video, grit, etc?

It's a Norton 8" Grinding Wheel, but we'd actually recommend using a 180 grit CBN Wheel for general tool sharpening. Here's a link with a video you can watch. www.woodturnerscatalog.com/p/97/7073/KJR-8-Inch-Spartan-CBN-Sharpening-Wheel

"you dont need to spend a lot of money to get great results.....We just used a wolvering grinding jig,a wolverine vari grind and a raptor setup" are you kidding me? If that is not a lot of money then what is your expensive mark? For a professional that does make money out of woodturning,thats nothing! but for a hobyist its a lot!
@fished145
@fished145 7 жыл бұрын
So my math was this: A $100 grinder, a $90 wolverine, a $53 varigrind. Comes in at $243 + tax. That is the price of only 2 Carter and Sons tools. Now compare that to a Tormek where the base machine with no jigs is $700. Add the jigs for turning and it was over $1k. Or a Sorby pro-Edge where the base machine is $549. Honestly turning isn't for the cheap... Lathe, tools, chucks, sand paper, finish etc... it all adds up. But for me at under $250 the Wolverine setup is indeed cheaper than many other options.
@Niphiz
@Niphiz 7 жыл бұрын
sure! yes I admire that,but there always ways that can you do it with something you made! alla those epxensive and high quality you mentioned above is targeted to professionals that make a living out of woodturning,for someone like me and probably you who are hobbysists and woodturnign enthusiasts,its a bit expensive,just for comparison,my lathe costs 250 euros,and that seems expensive to me,also,I live in Greece and if I ordered the wolverine jig from amazon,it would be about 60$ the things I ordered,plus 20$ for shipping! and its frustrating knowing that in America you have such great brands and local companies,and here in Greece everything is imported,especially lathes and lathe tools (its a rarity here,only few people are interested in woodturning)

I'm with you Teo. Nice video and all but that setup looks out of control expensive, but did give me some decent ideas for fabbing my own version. I spent $45 on my bench grinder and $50 on my lathe(with tools) so I've got $5 left for steel to fab a jig.

That CBN grinding wheel is not cheap either, about $180 to $220 depending on the supplier. What bothers me is that looking at the after grind photos I see that the edges are very rough. I assume that they were using a 60 or 80 grit wheel. A better way is to buy a Harbor Freight four inch belt/ six inch wheel sander and change the grit to 100 for the initial grind on the wheel. The table will tilt to the right angle which you can verify with a protractor. Finish the tool using a 400 grit and your tool will be very sharp. Cost of the sander with a coupon is about $60 to $75 dollars, and you still have another multiple use tool.

What grit do you recommend for the wheel?
@CraftSuppliesUSA
@CraftSuppliesUSA 8 жыл бұрын
+Trevor Ambrico You'll typically use a coarse wheel for metal removal and a finer wheel for final sharpening. We recommend a 46 grit Norton 3X on one side of the grinder and a 400 grit Super Fine CBN on the other.
