Only safe way to judge the sharpness and usefulness of an edge or a fishing hook as well. If you'll keep your hooks sharp, you'll catch more of the bigger fish and that's just how it works. I get done sharpening and both thumbnails are a disaster area.

For me as an urban dweller who sharpens pocket and kitchen knives, I've come to love these triangle sharpeners (spyderco does the original, there's a cheap one by lanksy). It's not much slower than using a rod, actually. Love how a maintained knife is pretty much razor sharp in a few seconds with these. I only use a wet stone, when I have to repair damage these days. Get well soon! Take all the time you need!

Thanks for this Lars. I also learned from my Grandfather who was a machinist in a Steel Mill. I believe most people over think the whole knife-axe-tool sharpening thing. As you mentioned it can be a hobby to try to get the most crazy razor sharp polished edge, but that type of edge is not required for everyday use. Lonnie on Far North Bushcraft has also mentioned people tend to take their knives to a stone when all it needs is a rub or two on a strop or steel. The knife will last a lot longer. Cheers Mike.

Lars, I loved the drag on the nail tip for testing the sharpness of knife blades, and it had me trying my pocket knife blade straightaway. This system of your grandfather's makes far more sense than all of the arm hair shaving and paper cutting seen in other videos, and it is a practical technique for testing sharpness that's just easy to use. I love the "get a feel for it approach," and as with most things in life, if the drag of the blade across my nail sits well and feels right, then for me, (who prefers to use a razor to shave my arms with and whose happy to tear up paper in untidy folds,) then this well balanced knife is fit for all of the other practical tasks it will be required for. Seriously Lars, yes this was a low key video due to your situation, but as with everything that you do, the content was really practical and clearly showed people how to safely achieve really sensible and even necessary results.
@SurvivalRussia3 жыл бұрын
Thank you buddy :) Yeah it was a bit low-key but I also need to keep the YT algo "happy" :) Anyway, I think too many try and make hand sharpening more complicated than it needs to be.
@passerby91233 жыл бұрын
@@SurvivalRussia Hi Lars, yes keep YT happy, but my low key comment was only made as a comparison of this video to those that have placed you in extreme situations. For me, the practical tip of knife blade on finger nail made this video more useful than some others because I use a knife everyday but rarely sleep outside in the snow at -30C. Small steps Lars. On earth you are never really alone, it just seems as if you are.

That is a good philosophy for sharpness Lars, I'm using a very similar one myself but...I got to be able to sharpen my knives/axes quickly or I find that I won't do it when I should and the knife can quickly slide into the "non-safe" sharp category. I use a drill with a sanding plate with a combination of fine sanding discs and a homemade rough stroping wheel. I find it works well and it's very fast. I hand strop or, use a ceramic stone to finish. All my knives become convexed very quickly with this method.
