How can you tell if you need to sharpen your blades? Look at the tips. Over time, your blades can be chipped or have sections sheared off and lose their straight edge. To fix it, you would simply grind off the uneven end, however that makes your blades too blunt and thick to fit in most small screw heads and that is when you need to sharpen the blade. Be aware that you can only sharpen flat-head screwdriver blades.

I noticed no honing oil was used. I have a similar (Horotec) sharpener. India stone absorbs oil like a sponge. Not sure I want to soak it however.

This doesn’t look right to me. That is a very sharp angle to sharpen the 2 blade sides. To match the original angle the driver needs to be inserted much further in roller tool. Also, why would you “eyeball” anything. Place the blade on stone inside roller tool then use the magnifier to square up tip as you tighten tool. If you need to flatten the blade tip, adjust blade tip in the roller tool to be just past equal depth to roller wheels. Now you only have to hold the blade 90 degrees to stone to get a more perfect flat tip because you only have to eyeball on one axis. Personally, I would start with flattening the blade tip before sharpening the blades 2 angles.

Yes, that's how we were taught. The grain is then parallel to the blade and the surface is flat.

When I need to use a tool like this to sharpen a flat blade driver is the day I turn in my tools. I was looking for how to sharpen Phillips drivers but, oh, never mind.

This is totally wrong. Doing it this way creates a blade that will slip out of the screw head channel. Proper slotted screwdriver profiles are slightly concave such that the blade narrows to the correct thickness well above the active area .... AND CARRIES THAT PROFILE THICKNESS TO THE END OF THE BLADE!! You need the blade to be parallel as it meets the screw slot, NOT continuing to get thinner and thinner.
