That's just for locking the differential on the transfer case. The front and rear axle diffs can't be locked (from the factory). Also, you can lock the diff in high or low - no need to return to neutral.

You probably got a Suzuki Jimny

I also just smack it into diff lock😂 no need for neutral as long as you're below 40kmph

Thank you for the presentation and Greetings from Paris ! I have a defender TD5 year 2003. If I up-shift quickly with high RPM from 1st to 2d, or 2d to 3d, I feel a crunch/grind in my hand (not so loud to hear it in the vehicle, I can just feel it with my hand). If I leave the RPM/rev normal, and leave a 1 second pause on Neutral between these gears, all is fine. No crunch when downshifting. The gearbox runs with new MTF94 oil. Is this a normal behavior for a R380 ? Are we supposed to UP shift slowly with these gearboxes, losing momentum ? Losing momentum is not an issue on flat road, but annoying climbing a slope. Many thanks for your help and feedback ! Julien

I'm getting a defender hopefully in a couple of weeks and trying to learn how the other gears work. Am I right in thinking the the differential is either off, or when on, front wheel locked or rear wheel locked but not all 4 wheels locked?

I don’t own any kind of Landrover, but from what I understand they come with locking centre diff only from the factory. Locking rear and front diffs would have to be a modification. A locking centre diff means that the front axle and rear axle will both turn at the same speed. However since the front wheels are not locked together, and the rear wheels are not locked together, you could still get one wheel slipping at the front and one at the rear and not be able to get traction.

This also works on discovery 1s and i guess range rover classics as they all mostly use the same gearbox and transfer cases.

Great advice on the putting in gear if is doesn't go in when in Neutral. Low range makes sense to lock the Diff, is that center Diff only? Not Front and Rear Diffs I image... Also in what situation would one have center lock locked in High? Higher speeds in snow?

Locked in high can be good for slippery, wet etc fields or grass that you don't want to crawl very slowly across.

The transfer case doesn't have syncros. If you want to make sure it goes in, just double clutch...

Can you shift from H to L on the fly just with the pushed cluch pedale?
@michaelmueller7962 Жыл бұрын
No, never do that - shift to low when moving no faster than walking pace, preferably in two stages: high to neutral, then neutral to low.

doesn't have front and read diff locks, just centre diff. so if you really want to be inforitive to the people, get the facts right. Maybe the presenter needs to read the plaque on the fuse cover, it tells you how to do it properly. Diff lock is just a push to the left, the icon should appear on the dash when engaged. Do not put into diff lock when the wheels are rotating at uneven speeds, but can be put into difflock at ANY speed provided the wheels are all turning at the same rate! As a tip; hold the lever in the desired gear ratio for the first few feet of driving as it is less likely to pop out. change of gear ratio can be performed upto 5mph/8km/h provided you are careful and slow. if a novice do it at standstill or very slow creep.
