On my 350 chevy, I had to use 1/8 in. Shims between starter and aluminum block to keep pinion gear from rubbing on flywheel. Very poor design

The reason for only wanting 60% engagement is so that there is not too much strain placed on the starting motor due to binding. Having this amount of engagement ensures that the minimal amount of wear happens between the flexplate or flywheel and the starter gear. Thanks for watching! There will only be space on one side of the starter pinion gear when checking properly.

Guy, do you think you could actually show us where you are inserting the paperclip? I cannot get this thing to engage correctly no matter what shim is on it, and this video is useless for showing the gear to flywheel clearance.
