Dope video! A different perspective of doing live video than I'm used to. I focus on capturing full sets with live audio, but this is all really good stuff to take into consideration!

I'd recommend shooting in a different picture profile to standard, nightclubs and festivals throw a huge dynamic range of light at your sensor (dark shadows, bright stage lights) and show shooting in a low contrast/flat picture profile will save a few of those shadow details and preserve the colour slightly better in your highlights. Hope this helps anyone giving this a go, it took me at least two years to get my nightlife footage looking nice out of a grade.

What do you mean different profile?
@DanNeedhamVisual
@DanNeedhamVisual 2 жыл бұрын
@@animalsmistakenformonsters1492 Fair warning, this is all alien to most people, including me, and we're all just doing our best to get it right. This is my best understanding of it all, but I'm sure many can correct me on anything below. A colour space determines what possible luminance values (brightness levels) and colours are available, and how the camera will process the information from the sensor to fit within these values. A Rec709 colour space is what you'd likely consider 'normal' looking, but it's pretty limited in terms of how much headroom you'll have in the highlights and shadows. This makes it great when you don't want to do any post-production (live streams, home videos), but you're compromising on potential image quality to have it ready to deliver straight away. Shooting in a log (logarithmic) colour space will result in a desaturated and low contrast image, but there will be a lot more information available for you to use when you colour correct (this is an extra unavoidable step when shooting something in a log profile). I'm not sure about other cameras, but on Sony, the Picture Profile is the group of settings that determine gamma curves, colour gamuts, and more. So this is where you're deciding how you want the camera to process your footage, and for something as harsh as a nightclub or festival, I'd always recommend leaning towards something that retains your shadows and highlights a bit better. For me that's S-Log2, but S-Log3 is best if you're shooting 10bit footage or higher.

Hey Jake! Thanks so much for this video! I find it quite overwhelming to start filming concerts on your own but your video helped me a lot! I'm 17 now and got to shoot already lots of concerts with bands like The Scorpions and I wish I saw this video earlier!😂 Now in quarantine I thought I should work on my skills & this is probably the best video, especially for getting an overview! Thank you so much!

I didn't realize in the end video that the footage of the short compilation is actually consist of many angle and variations... it makes the footage lively, entertaining, and engaging. I would sample some of your shared knowledge and implement it to how I record music performance. but I use camcorder though so things might be different.

100fps allows 1/200, gpod for slow mo but is it a solution to reduce light kicking issue? I mean at 1/50 it looks like stromboscopic lights capture is bug full on my r7, instead of flashing there are full white lines randomly, I guess it's about rolling shutter ... it's why I ask

@WarmHandshake
@WarmHandshake 3 жыл бұрын
Been using the same rode shotgun mic for about 5 years now, its great. Also, look into monitoring the audio within the camera settings, you can adjust the mic sensitivity so it doesn't peak. I get great audio in venues thanks to the combo of those two things.

Sound wise - what would you recommend to do if the sound is "breaking" ? external mic etc ?
@pmmc2023
@pmmc2023 2 жыл бұрын
Drop your mic sensitivity by -10 to -18 decibels and bring it back up in post if needed. That “breaking” sound is referred to as “clipping” in audiospeak. It’s like overexposing an image. I definitely recommend picking up a nice used rode mic or even better, making friends with the audio FoH people and leaving a tascam type recorder in front of their desk. Bring em a beer or a snack and they might even let you leave your bag there.

For audio i'm recording my points to camera with the rode wireless go: geni.us/E35MX6 - in regards to recording the artists it's a little tricky as more often then not you need the rights to use their music in your videos - for this video i have used only licensed music through Red Bull Sound Supply

Hello jake,how to set whiteblance in stage light. Thank you.
@aholder4471
@aholder4471 3 жыл бұрын
This threw me for loop for a while. Hopefully my 2 cents will help. No one has a straight answer because there are so many different colors coming off of stage lighting. I've found for normal LED atage lighting that they have a white that is basically set around daylight at 5600K on their white setting and some older par cans that are tungsten halogen lamps are in the 3200-degree K range. If you have time and access to the LD (lighting director) you can ask him to pull up his white he uses on the front wash to light the talent and then manually balance it yourself. Of course it's rare you get this kind of luxury so I would start with 5600 and see how that looks.
