I can’t thank you enough. As a photographer for 23 years, I’ve been thrown into video 5 years ago for Biz Journal jobs. I wiggled my way into a DP role for a crew that got COVID and I just was rehired by the same director for another shoot. I was able to rent a ton of gear I’ve never used before and it’s you and Epic Light Media’s videos that have given me a look into proper video production. Cheers! Also, I freaking love it!

@@GriffinConway A photographer as well, that’s awesome. Yeah, I mean, anything with matching 3 cams white balance or technical in-depth C-log tips would rock. Last year I upgraded to two R5s from shooting 5D 3 for the longest time. ROI on point. I use two Atomos Ninjas V witch seems to work well enough for now. Either way, I’ll be tuning in. 🤘🏼

Very solid setup - super impressed that you stayed on top of all of that on your own. Just goes to show what you can achieve being organised and having systems along with the skills and experience. I like that you've shared a more minimal setup too, that's really interesting to compare. One thing you didn't comment on was whether you think the setup you went for worked for the contributors in front of camera. Not sure what type of interviews you were doing but I often find there's a trade off between production value (in terms of scale of setup) and authenticity of performance from contributor. Not sure how much of an issue this is in the US where people seem to like being in front of camera but in the UK people get pretty weirded out by lights and cameras and tend to clam up. I guess the minimal crew helps a bit. Anyways maybe that's a topic for another video! Thanks for sharing your work!
@GriffinConway
@GriffinConway 3 жыл бұрын
That’s definitely a great topic. Thanks for the comment and for checking out the video. Because of who the talent was for the interview, I felt they were mostly comfortable being in front of the camera and the big setup didn’t bother them too much. I definitely know what you mean and there have been times where I scrapped high production quality for more authenticity. I can think of one specific instance in on a doc shoot I was on, and the subject had just gone through a tough loss. Even though the situation could have benefitted from a light, in the moment it felt more natural to just crank up the iso and get the true emotion. I’ll keep that in mind for future videos!

Funny story, so I'd never heard of cross key lighting before but I was tasked with filming a 2 person interview setup and we only have 2 lights (plus a smaller LED panel). I decided on something similar to this in my head and actually came across this video in the Aputure user group and sure enough, the lighting scenario I came up with in my head is actually a thing! I was a little worried at first because I wasn't given much time to test it out ahead of time but I was really happy that I came across this video as well as a couple of other videos on cross key lighting because it took some of the trial and error out of the equation. There were a few flaws I had with my original plan and it helped me get to a pretty solid final look so thank you so much for taking the time to make this! Subbed!

Griffin Conway If you use a color chart or color checker I’d like to see a video on using on properly and then how it’s used in post. Another idea is lighting a “scene” in an entire room. For example I had my subject yesterday filling up feed bucket at a horse farm. She was in a room and I was a bit lost on how to light the room.

Just an observation of your setup. I have found that a two interview setup in a studio during covid has been challenging. For example, looking at your setup (compared to how I have been setting up), I had our talents much further apart as they will remove their mask, we needed a safe distance. And because of that, you have a wider set and you start to see more of the dirty underwear (stuff you don't want to see in the shot...lol). As far as the light placement, I had tried to use the lights in a double-duty function, but I needed control over the intensity of the backlight. So I use tube lights as backlights since they are easy to carry and has a wide spill for the back. I do like the use of a lantern as fill. Lastly....I need a maxi-boom!
@GriffinConway
@GriffinConway 3 жыл бұрын
The mini max is such a great piece of kit. Covid has definitely made things challenging. Our set was a Covid set as well, so our talent were spaced by 6 feet. It’s been exciting working with some new restrictions with Covid. It’s nice to have some new challenges to overcome.

Late to the game, hope you or others can answer my question. Love the Mini max, but my question is the two 120Ds- appears to me they are on a larger boom than just the normal c-stand or am I wrong. Love to know what boom you have for the 120D's unless they are just the standard Cstand. Thanks again for this video. Great work.
