How to Shoot an AR-15 / M4 Carbine

How to Shoot an AR-15 / M4 Carbine with tactics and firearms instructor John Lovell. In this video, I give some simple tips for beginners to properly mount an AR-15, or M4 carbine. This platform is good for other types of rifles like AK47s, or for shotguns as well. I begin with the rifle platform starting at the feet and working the way to the hips and shoulders before extending out into how we establish a proper grip and grip pressures. Understand that my context is gunfighting and not hunting or competitive shooting, so if I am not in perfect harmony with other instruction you adhere to, understand that in different contexts there is room for differences. Every time you find yourself standing around with your thumb in your but, draw a card from your pocket. At the end of the day you'll have done 100 pushups. (1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8+9+10+11+11+11+12=100) 😉

You're a great instructor. Binge watch all of your videos. Took a rifle class in LA county today, cal shooting academy. Nothing but weird little quips and belittlement the entire time. Jeez. Thank you for this video. I was taught by my grandfather, master chief petty officer in 3 wars. The old style stance is how I was taught. Side stance, butt stock firm in the shoulder, almost a limp front arm tucked in to the chest just to support the rifle. He taught my mother as well in rifle school. She has several medals in sharp shooting as an adolescent. I definitely need to learn how to hold my AR 15 differently. I changed up the stance for shooting my 45-70 because of the recoil. I love the first day of Jiu-Jitsu reference. Definitely finesse and muscle memory way more than man handling your opponent.

You're smarter than I thought when I saw the thumbnail of this video . I suppose I have a prejudice against the thumb over bore ( TOB ) foregrip style . None of the best shooters I know or know of use this style . Whenever I see this my first thought is "somebody's trying to be all tacticool" . The straight arm and thumb over bore grip doesn't transition from upright to prone firing positions well ( quickly ) and also presents problems for me in CQB or working in teams (flagging team members) . To me this seems to be more gaming than practical . But I never knock other people for doing what works best for them and you definitely have you fundamentals mastered .

Military here. We run a 2 point sling 90% of the time because it's way easier to sling the rifle behind the back or keep it tight to the chest when doing pretty much anything (lifting, prepping defensive positions, detaining individuals, etc...). We're usually not engaged at distances so close we have split seconds to shoulder our rifle, unless you're spec ops or something, so it's not usually an issue having to clear the sling first before returning fire.

Only time i ever used a two point sling was with the m249. For the m4 i modified my three pointer to hold the rifle tight to my chest, and when unclipped it was attached by a single strap from the stock to my firing shoulder with the sling forming a loop around my chest under my support arm, letting the rifle hang straight down at my side. Clipped was for on the fob and unclipped was for out in sector. Your sling and how you use it was one of the few things each individual had free reign to do what worked best for them.

Man this was pretty easy to understand. I think this video is good for new shooters who`s trying to get in to tactical shooting. I think many instructors ends up becoming someone who`s doing an "Instructor impression" which is just trying to look like a famous KZbin instructor instead of actually teaching people.

Great concept on alignment on all platforms of your targeting combat. Its the same in martial arts.When you learn a movement.You can also use that same movement with a knife or any other type of weapon in the same movement.

In regard to grip fatigue, that's why you should use a full vertical foregrip a little bit back on your rail. Full vertical foregrips allow you to aim your rifle while relaxing your wrist, and it gives you great recoil control. I know the military uses them all the time but for some reason they are really unpopular in the civilian market. Also it looks like you may be able to extend your buttstock a notch or two.
