I then explained to him in great detail how the actual projectile of a 2.23/5.56 round is basically the same width as a 22s, they just travel much faster. I also told him about how most pistol rounds are in fact larger and heavier than a 5.56 projectile and are only not as powerful because they’re not as fast. I also attempted to explain the difference between a hollow point and a penetrator round but I guess he couldn’t grasp the concept of barely-advanced ballistic behaviors.

Plus, you have the option of tracer, light armor piercing, match grade, hollow point, etc. 2. Magazines - there is a WIDE variety of magazine manufacturers, and a variety of capacities (10rd, 20rd, 30 and 40rd magazines), plus drum magazines from 50rd, 60rd, 100rd, and higher, and even belt-fed. 3. Spare parts - plenty of spare parts available should you have a weapons failure with your rifle, plus a plethora of after-market manufacturers producing a monstrously wide market of products. 4. Ease of use - from handling, shooting, cleaning, and care/maintenance, there are plenty of people with enough knowledge, training, and experience for a civilian to be adequately trained to use an AR 15 rifle. 5. Versatility - from lasers, flashlights, flare kits, shotgun attachments, red dots, scopes/optics, suppressors, etc; you can customize your AR to accomplish whatever task needed for your own uses.

I don't know that I entirely agree with that. I would say covering the bases of capability is more important than owning a bunch of guns that all do more or less the same job. A red dot sight for the rifle. 4. A quality handgun. 5. A light mounted on the handgun. 6. Holster for the handgun. 7. Body Armor with some capability to carry spare ammunition. 8. A suppressor for the rifle. 9. Quality helmet. Either ballistic or bump, up to you. 10. Quality night vision and its support equipment to mount to the helmet. 11. All the ammo you can afford. I emphasize quality because yes these things are expensive, and the nice stuff is even more expensive. The truth is that you can try to cheap out on these things and risk something that will fail you, or just save the extra money and get something that wont fail you up front. Ar-15s are really easy to learn. The military gives the M-16 (same gun but with a 3 round burst setting) to 17 and 18 year Olds who have never shot a gun and train them. If you're uncomfortable with a caliber, give yourself a confidence fire. Load one round and shoot a target. Don't try to be precise. Just learn the gun. You'll be shocked how quickly you will become comfortable with it.

As a criminal defense attorney with 16 years of experience in Memphis, I can tell you that the typical home invasion has multiple robbers. I say robbers because, if you are home, they are going to try to rob you, and they are highly likely to be armed. There's no negotiation that's going to help with the issue, and there's a decent chance that they are going to shoot the resident(s) to eliminate witnesses. The best weapon, like Colin said, is an AR. It likely will enable the resident to bring overwhelming force against the threat, and when you are at home minding your own business, you definitely deserve to be able to have the most immediate help on hand.

As a former military member, and living in Alaska, knowing that the vast majority of my neighbors keep firearms, I definitely feel safer than a lot of Americans in their current state. Thank you for pointing out the fact that armed citizens make a huge difference in overall safety, compared to "Gun Free Zones". Don't be afraid of guns... they aren't evil or good... they don't pull the trigger. If local, state, or federal governments make more laws that limit or decrease the number of American citizens that can own guns, it only makes everyone more vulnerable to criminals who don't care what the laws say. Making more laws isn't the answer. Enforcing existing laws would help. Some politicians seem to think they can infringe on your Constitutional right to keep and carry firearms... violating their oath to defend the Constitution when sworn into office. Great stuff... as usual from Colion Noir
@emilyemisarmiento3503 Жыл бұрын
"gun free zones" are useless unless EVERYONE in the nation is in on the social contract to NOT use guns or heavily restrict themselves. There's primary research papers that have again and again shown how gun free zones on a LARGE SCALE usually national is the safest way to go. Or. If you're going to be armed like Switzerland then HEAVY RESTRICTIONS is also very safe. Population size is a small factor that doesn't change much, the size of the U.S is irrelevant if you can regulate and heavily restrict who can have a gun or not.

I remember hearing that story about the pregnant mom defending her family with an AR. At 2:44 was THAT the rifle she used? ANYWAY... yes, I agree with all points. When a devastating hurricane came through my town, despite the widespread police presence on the major roads there was still some looting going on. Cell towers and telephone poles were knocked down, making it impossible to call for help especially during those first few days. Many of us had chainsaws in our hands to clear out the roads, but we were also packing pistols. But there were also people on their porches with ARs. The community as a whole came together to rebuild and the spirit of cooperation was really high, but at the same time we weren't going to tolerate any looting. Signs saying "Looters will be shot" were up all over the place, and any strange vehicle on our road that wasn't a cop car automatically drew suspicion. And this all happened in an American town just 3 years ago. So all this talk about "SHTF" or some post-apocalyptic dystopia is not just sci-fi paranoia; it can and did actually happen at least in my town. It didn't make the news, though, because from what I heard (I didn't have electricity at the time) just as soon as the first gas station reopened 20 miles away a few days later, most of the major news networks stopped reporting on the devastation. In my town, Hurricane Michael became known as the "Forgotten Storm". Forgotten by the world, maybe, but not by us as many still mark time between "Before Michael" and "After Michael".

Bullet points of firsthand experience: When there were riots back in 2016 my wife and I were caught up unexpectedly. There were two groups standing outside of different businesses with ARs and AKs. I asked one when we passed if they owned that business and they said "yup" and I asked if they had trouble. The chuckle was contagious because we all knew no one would mess with them. Even the cops left them alone. When the riots reemerged in 2020 I saw quite a few armed "protesters" and I kept my distance, and ultimately, quit my job because Portland had become too crazy. They all had rifles and shotguns. I'm reminded too of Katrina when it hit the south. Agents were going door to door disarming people because the looting had gotten out of hand and ObViouSlY it made sense to disarm the residents who were waiting for help. Now what ought to be asked is why is it that the most controversial gun is one that best keeps you safe from predators, people, groups, or tyranny is the one that's under the microscope? Anyone trying to disarm you is planning to attack you later. Anyone trying to bolster you wants to live alongside you.

Come to find out, it was a handgun, no rifle anywhere. Wtf? She admitted she knew nothing and was just scared of firearms. She took a bullet to the hand i believe. In my case, after 20+ years in the Army, I would get an AR-15 due to system familiarity. This is because fundamentally it is the civilian version of the firing system in the M-4 and M-16 which I have used for the preceding 2 decades. That means that it is as familiar to me as breathing and I already know the tactics for employing it in a defensive situation. That knowledge and familiarity if I had to defend my self at home would enhance my odds of surviving a situation that required that level of force.
@moonglum1252 жыл бұрын
Thanks for focusing on system familiarity, training and proper utilization for the situation at hand. Just owning the weapon will improve survivability vs having a hand gun, knife against multiple and/or armed assailants. The crux of the AR 15 is proper training, utilization, and how quickly one can become proficient.

Hurricane Ian just reminded me how quickly society can break down. The day after, my entire town had no power, water, internet, cell service or gas. Roads were blocked from downed power lines and trees. Even once a gas station opened, it took hours to wait in line and was cash only. Everyone has a generator and gas gets stolen often. So the chances that someone would try to steal gas, generators, food, water, went through the roof. Luckily I was well prepared

Another reason: war prevention. How many times have other countries decided not to invade the US simply because they’d have to battle our military AND our well armed citizens?

Yup. It stopped Japan, in WWII, from invading our shores. I would say that we now have nuclear weapons, but our nation's enemies want the territory to be left habitable. They'd have to be very desperate to nuke us. Not saying it won't happen, just saying. Besides, after the nukes drop the survivors STILL need an AR15!

@@smarterthan98 Carrying is fine as I understand people want to feel protected. The want for excessive firepower is interesting to me as it seems to be overkill. I want to understand why a person longs for that when we have such a problem today with them. Can you not protect yourself with a handgun or a shotgun? In what realistic situation would you need to defend yourself with an ar-15 ?
@smarterthan982 жыл бұрын
@@NewAgeChipSkylark You're literally asking me the question that Colion answers in the video we're commenting on. My EDC handgun is a subcompact with 8 round magazines, which is why I carry at least 1 spare mag. If your family is in danger, do you want only 1 or 2 rds per attacker, or would you rather the attackers get scared off by the fact that they are outgunned? Which scenario is more likely to end with your family, and yourself, unharmed? My comment on massively superior firepower was directed more towards my home defense than outside the home, as an AR is a bit impractical for a night out with those I love. God help anyone who tries to attack me or my family anywhere, but especially in my home. It's not about what's likely, it's about what's possible.

What had originally convinced me of an AR/5.56 platform over a shotgun happened when I was in college about 10 years ago. There was apparently a guy dealing drugs out of his off-campus apartment and a small group of people busted down his door to steal money and anything else they could find. One roommate hid behind his bed and pointed his shotgun at the door, and when one of the intruders came in, shot and killed them. However, he didn't rack the slide properly, and was then shot and killed by one of the other 2 intruders before he could resolve the malfunction. I don't know if having a semi-auto rifle would have actually saved him, but I know I didn't want to take that risk.

Thankyou Colion for pointing out the very practical reasons why an AR15 is effective. In my opinion, every law abiding adult (who isn't afraid of guns) should purchase (through legal means) both a handgun & either a rifle or a shotgun, plus an adequate supply of ammunition for both arms... And (most importantly) get adequate training in gun safety, shooting skills, and the laws for their state regarding open & concealed carry. It is better to be prepared for a bad situation & never have to use it; than be unprepared & become a victim. Please share this message; so that we can support and defend the US Comstitution & Bill of Rights (most importantly the 1st & 2nd Ammendments) from those foreign or domestic who's goal is to weaken or bring harm to "We the People."
