The one thing I’d add and is most critical as well is a body workout, upper body and especially the CORE, with emphasis on stamina and I’d add if possible, yoga exercises, it will improve you immensely, shoulders are also a must, I know I said upper body already, but many ignore the shoulders and don’t focus enough on them along with that CORE, this will improve, depending on the individual 100-300% percent in areas and especially in rigidity and stamina as well as the long hall and long hold, especially in all day or weekend matches.

As always Dan another great informative video. Unsupported is always humbling but learning solid fundamentals from the start is very important. In NRL style shooting weight is a friend and a adversary, its difficult to find the perfect intermediate but a great way to pick up points. Its something i need to practice more and you have giving me new things to try. Just curious what is the weight of the Anschutz and what are your thoughts on using your sling as an aide or hinderance ? Your rimfire friend, Dave

Thanks a lot for the kind words. The Anschutz is about 7.5lbs as he had it setup, the Shultz and Larsen M47 I was using was more than double. I think that with the current weight trend for rimfire rifle’s always climbing higher- offhand stages will always be an issue for most as a result. I personally do not like a heavy positional (NRL22/ ORPS) rifle and mine only weighs about 12lbs or so, but that is because I find it clumsy and slow and believe me, the shooter has enough of those attributes as it is! A sling is an interesting tool. For the most part, when hitched correctly it is amazing, but due to our stages, you may have to only use it for a single target and then remove it for barricade and then back into it etc, in many cases it’s not feasible. I use an Anschutz leather single arm cuff match sling that is relatively easy and fast to remove and replace in position, but I rarely use it unless there are several shots at an offhand position.

While this doesn't look as exciting as blazing away with a beta mag on a AR it by far one of the most important skills for a rifle shooter to develop. Shooting offhand requires a lot of dedicated practice. In real world events you will not always have a rest or stable shooting position and if the shoot requires off hand positioning you had better be trained and ready than spitting rounds and missing all day long at the target. Yes, and each shooting discipline will be different. For this offhand style it’s actually very difficult to get it right because unlike shooting from a bench, (where you can partially exhale and hold your breath) you need to provide your working muscles with some oxygen since they are working to hold you and the rifle up. This makes breathing key and probably the most difficult thing to master in my opinion for offhand shooting. I did not cover it in the video because it is advanced and Dave is still learning at getting better at the early stages of his game.
