PICKING AN ANTIQUE MALL AT THE END | VINTAGE RESELLER SHOPPING
We stumble across a big old antique mall in Ohio’s most famous pottery town, and there’s a lot on sale! But what’s the story?
The shop cat’s calm collectedness belies the sad truth that this long-time antique center in a wonderful 1890s building is preparing to close its doors. The reasons may be suspect, but we’re here to shop and enjoy what has been a repository for ceramics, glass and home decor from America’s century. What will we find?
There’s tricks to successful shopping at an old school mall. What was not so old when it started is what now is prized nearly four decades later! We find unusual examples of McCoy and Haeger pottery, a wealth of uranium lime custard glass and a different color of swung vase in our journey through three stories of wonderful vintage memories.
Where does it go now? We certainly try to do our part by taking a box of reseller-priced finds with us, a fitting tribute to an antique center we will only once get to enjoy.
Here are some of the things we rooted out on our first and last journey through this venerable antique mall:
Hull Red Riding Hood, McCoy silver glaze, Willie Shoemaker signed print, Robinson Ramsbottom jardiniere/pedestal, Roseville apple blossom, signed Salish totem pole, compacts, Walt Disney Productions early movie figures, Fenton lime custard glass, Fenton bells, beer signs, Chesterfield stadium ashtray, Pilgrim pitcher, Lane mallard tv lamp, breweriana, Goofus glass, McCoy TV lion and clown, Hull World’s Fair mugs, Bohemian decanter, Victorian Easter lithograph, Levi’s neon sign, Prussian style hat, McCoy Strawberry kitchen ware, Haeger bandsmen, Rick Wisecarver pottery, Australian linens, quilts, Frankoma Oklahoma ashtray, waterfall chifforobe, Weller Oddfellows plate, Hull Corky Pig ad bank, owl bookends, B&O Centenary book, Victorian carriage, Siesta Ware western brands beverage set, etc.

You know what, I thought the same exact thing. I was thinking it might look a little fantastic in a creepy display for Halloween. What ever happened to Baby Jane, anybody? LOL Obviously a true head vase collector would be turned off by a remake like this but for an eclectic like myself....I'm loving it.

Hi George! That first piece of Goofus you picked up was a Dugan piece. Those pieces always seem to retain their colour well. Dugan's Goofus seemed to be the best for retaining its colour, even more than his cousin's, (Harry Northwood), pieces. I really liked the Waterfall chifferobe. That Victorian baby carriage was fantastic! Loved the Native American vase. The Weller pieces were all fantastic. Weller and Warwick have always been favourites of mine. Pity about the local government greed shutting out places like that mall! Greed knows no shame, though. Lots of interesting items there! Thanks for the take-along!!!
@TheAntiqueNomad
@TheAntiqueNomad 2 жыл бұрын
That’s interesting! I didn’t realize Dugan made goofus, I knew Northwood did. I must apologize as I didn’t get your piece mailed today before I left I’m so sorry!
@CONSTELLATION_PEGASUS
@CONSTELLATION_PEGASUS 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheAntiqueNomad A lot of the intaglio Goofus pieces were made by Dugan. Some of the patterns, like "Tulip", he made completely painted, and some were made with only the pattern painted. I have an example of each. The "Tulip" pieces aren't too easy to come across, either. He and Northwood worked together, in the same factory, until Northwood returned to England, so I would've thought they would've used the same techniques and paints, but Dugan's pieces, in my experience, have always held the paint much better than any other maker's Goofus. Northwood and Dugan did share molds, and many of Dugan's Carnival Glass pieces were originally old Northwood molds he had used to make Custard Glass. There has even been some speculation that some CG pieces marked with the "N" were actually made by Dugan, using some of his cousin's old molds. One thing is for sure - if you ever come across a "Northwood" piece of red CG, it's fake. Northwood closed up shop and returned to England, before the techniques of making the red were developed. Just post the cafe' card when you get the chance. No problem!

02:40 A number of years ago, I had to metaphorically slap a girlfriend who had just inherited a big and pretty Roseville jardinière and was about to put it out for the trash because she didn't care for it. When I told her how much it might bring, she revised her opinion. 13:24 That style of embroidery is known as redwork. It's good if a bit primitive. The actual quilting is nothing to write home about; I suspect this of being a summer quilt. 13:35 The feather quilting is gorgeous! Someone put hours and hours into work that intricate. The block is just Grandma's Flower Basket - nothing special. The value in this one is all in the quilt work. 13:43 And obvs. someone got tired or bored and gave up on the Mother Goose quilt, which would have been stitching over pre-stamped or iron-on transfers.. As worn as the binding is, I don't see there would be any point in trying to finish it, even. 14:24 No, no! IOOF with the triple chain links are emblems of the Independent Order Of Odd Fellows. We had a lodge in the town where I grew up. 18:26 And unfortunately I would advise to go very slow on that one. I can see dampstain rippling at the top of the first pages, and I also noticed some spotting near the spine on the front board. Train nut that I am, I might risk it personally, but then I'm a train nut.

That's very interesting and helpful! I really should have recognized the Odd Fellows, not sure why I confused that with Foresters. The details on quilts and linens are so amazing, I really need to learn my patterns better. I did decide what you mentioned about the train book was prohibitive and left it in the end

Did you ask what the building's next life was going to be?

The town is spending a bunch of money to buy it, turn it into a bunch of little shops with a restaurant and nighttime entertainment (which will happen when the little shops who need the traffic are closed). It's frankly a hairbrained idea that has failed repeatedly in small towns across America

@@TheAntiqueNomad I was inquiring about your travels to the NorthEAST! I live in Massachusetts and we have lots of old here and some great shows that your followers would love to see you at!! New England in general is a wonderful part of the country, particularly at this time of year.

New point of view, the restaurant is a place for antique shoppers to go to. The Antique market can it not move down the street or close by so both benefit?

They've been in business 30+ years and were going to retire in 5, so they've decided to just move on. There are a lot of other antiques in Zanesville though

Is there a way to find out marks that say something like ‘CP’ or just a number on a piece of pottery? Can’t believe that you got three thumbs down. You don’t deserve them.

Why oh why aren't you showing any Shawnee pottery? And not even mentioning them. Shawnee is my very favoroite collectible. Disappointed.

I love Shawnee too! I did show quite a bit in my Springfield, Illinois video not too long ago. This mall had less Shawnee than the other Ohio makers, but I will definitely keep including Shawnee in future videos
