I cut down by shopping by only buying things that are minimalist in design and good quality. That makes it extremely hard to buy anything, because everything available in stores is either embellished or junky. It also forces me to save up or do without, because only a handful of companies cater to my tastes (Apple, Tesla, Muji, Sonos, Kanto Audio, Briggs & Riley, and sometimes IKEA if I look really hard).

Oh yes, that is a good way to cut down unnecessary shopping. I do that too just with different values and rules when it comes to what I buy. But having a checklist in mind saves me from buying things I would otherwise regret later.

I live at the foot of Yosemite National Park, I’m ready to go camping at moments notice. I got a super light non polyester camping kit, many items I use daily too since I’m an extreme minimalist. The secret is stuff that is highly multipurpose. For example, I got two Soviet plash palatka waterproof tarps which are my backpack, my tent, sleeping bag, a hammock if I want, and rain poncho. A german army mess kit which is a canteen that has a cup that I use to cook and boil water and eat out of, in a canvas haversack I carry oatmeal, salted butter, coffee, and beef jerkey, that’s it. A solar/crank lamp that is also a radio, and a charger, first aid kit, a hatchet that can also be used as a hammer for my tent, to make shaving for camp fire, to chop wood, to cook. A spoon that is also a fork, knife, and bottle opener. Wool blanket, cotton rope, ferro rod and lighter. I wear wool pants, Iron ranger boots I wear often and have resole when needed, waxed flannel, wool socks, it’s important to keep your feet dry, sandals, and a waxed light denim jacket.

The lighter you camp, the more you camp. My golden rule.

I recently stopped using our dryer and I'm using more cold water to wash, saved us $200 last month!

Love your channel! I would like to hear more about your minimal lifestyle with your family and especially with your kids. Since I have a child a feel like it’s different and sometimes harder to stick on my way of lifestyle. Fe what about toys, kids clothes, kids room... would like to have some inspirations since most of the minimalism channels are about single persons :) what are your experiences in families?

I love camping and sometimes I think about giving away all my stuff and have a perfect backpack belongings. But truth is I did camp like two times in my entire life. I might not like this idea but I do need more home stuff than camping.

Oh, that is a bit of a dilemma... I gave away a lot of my hobby gear for that same reason. Also because I had the feeling that it made me feel worse if it was sitting around not being used. But if you really like camping, you could also try to give it another shot and make it a priority to camp this summer. Maybe go on a microadventure somewhere near but beautiful. And if you realize in a few months that you haven't done that or actually don't even want to, it's very reasonable to give away the camping stuff☺

In both Situations, when decluttering (resulting in selling stuff for me) and when Shopping I ask myself: Do I want the thing or do I want the money? Its pretty simple, but effective for me

Great job! Can you do a video on how to combat the uges to buy? I find that I get hit with a wave of depression if I resist the impulse to buy stuff. I think I feel like getting new clothes or stuff like that will bring me more friends...

I have that exact topic on my list of video ideas, but I am still struggling a bit with coming up with the perfect tips. In general, I think it is more effective to just try to be yourself even if that isn't easy because the people that are just willing to be your friends for your stuff are kind of not worth it... I hope you have a great weekend and maybe you can shift that feeling after resisting to buy something into a "success" feeling, because you just saved money, protected the environment and made the decision you wanted to make☺
