I love the casual conversational signs you throw in like "NYB" and "true-biz". The stuff you don't find in an ASL dictionary. More of those, please! 🤟🏼

Your videos are so helpful! I know it’s not a question you can really answer in the comments, but I work in a restaurant and have been wondering how you’d sign a person’s check total?
@ASLMeredith3 жыл бұрын
Hi Rachel! I suggest learning the number signs to give a total amount. You could learn "total" or "dollars", too, but the most basic first step would be to learn numbers. If someone knows they're expected to pay, or you've just brought the check over or just rung them up at a register, then signing the number alone in context would make clear that it's the amount they owe. Here are numbers 1-100: kzbin.info/aero/PL-6MutNucAZL1mqZjOklkFgjaOtq-rWLI

Please make a similar signs video. On the words new and flower they look similar.
@ASLMeredith3 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for this suggestion! Can you elaborate on the signs you think are similar? The word NEW is signed in neutral space and FLOWER is signed on the face, so maybe it's a different sign you're thinking of. Perhaps what you're referring to as FLOWER is the sign GROW/PLANT/SPRING? Here are a few videos that include all the signs in question: NEW: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rGa5YWqbis6XmNE SPRING: kzbin.info/www/bejne/apazqWBvaMqDhNk FLOWER: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aXSYh415rbyFh7c

First off, love your videos! i noticed that when you fingerspelled business you did the sign for S twice...I thought that for words that end in double letter you always have to slide to side instead of double signing the letter. DId i misunderstand my instructor?
@ASLMeredith3 жыл бұрын
Good eye! Different textbooks and different teachers give different "rules" to follow for double letters; there isn't one singular correct way. Vowels are almost always a "slide", while consonants.. you'll see a mix, and it may vary by position. Here's a quora post that summarizes some 'rules': www.quora.com/When-hand-spelling-ASL-how-do-you-sign-two-of-the-same-letters-like-in-good-or-steel But in your class, use the style your teacher recommends!

Hi Anna- I hope you saw my reply on your other comment, that it means SAME/ similar . So two or more signs being "similar".

Can you do a video on how to gramsticslly sign “very” before things, like very busy, very hungry, very angry etc? Cuz I just sign “a lot” even though Ik it’s not correct, it’s just the only thing I can think of
@JessicaNiles3 жыл бұрын
What I learned was to sign more emphatically to match the severity of the "very". If you're just regular hungry- sign HUNGRY. If you're *VERY* hungry, use your whole body to accentuate and dramatize the sign... (however, with this particular sign- do NOT make it repeatedly! It means something else entirely if you do. 😂😜)

I'm confused. The sign for "Busy" in your video "Learn American Sign Language: Beginner conversational words and phrases in ASL" looks the same as the sign for "Business" in this video. Am I overlooking something in the two gestures?
@bjgoels2 жыл бұрын
I had noticed in a television program recently that the words for thank you and good seem to be the same. Did I misunderstand?
@ASLMeredith2 жыл бұрын
Good eye! The signs GOOD and THANK-YOU can look very similar. GOOD may be done 2-handed, with the dominant hand ending against the non-dominant. But when signed one-handed, GOOD can look a lot like THANK-YOU. Context will typically make the meaning clear.

(and NEW is different - BOTH hands are palm-up! One fluid movement.)

I should have known you already had a video on this! Good to know I'm not the only one. Clean & school, I'm good on, but the other two... I practiced it as a back-to-school phrase: clean, new, school paper.

It's hard to focus cuz you're all over the place I know you're trying to explain everything to make since
@ASLMeredith3 жыл бұрын
Hi Ashley, thanks for your feedback! Could you be more specific about "all over the place?" so I can better understand and improve for you? I show each sign with the word on screen first, and then add some explanation to help you produce the sign correctly. For the explanation portions, did you know there's voiceover and caption to help you follow along? Hope that helps. At 4:11 there's a review of only the signs (no explanation or sentences). And lastly - if the video jumps around or feels too quick, please use KZbin's video controls to change the speed to 0.5 or 0.25 ! An easy way to slow things down.
