I find the best way to seal the end of the silicone tube for storage is to leave a blob of silicone protruding and then wrap some masking tape around the nozzle and pinch it at the top to seal it off. You can then normally just pull the set blob out for next use. If it's too far cured down the nozzle, remove the nozzle, check silicone is still good at the tube end and just use a new nozzle.

Looks like a very neat job that. I’ve used a similar tool called a fugi profiling tool and it comes with a small attachable rail to glide over the grout joints if you don’t want to get that small ripple in the silicone. Can be useful so just wanted to put it out there.

I've managed to watch the pros at work doing this job. Builder that uses me gets in a professional mastic man and he didn't mind me watching. He used different shaped pieces of bolser wood and sprayed the wall with some sort of soapy water after he applied the silicon (really thick) he had cut the nozel off more than I ever would but the finishing was perfect!!! He used them by pushing the silicone from both sides till together in a gyoolpy mess that didn't stick the the water mixture. I heard the big secret is to soak the wooded formers in the solution for 24hr before trying to use.
@dalriada8426 жыл бұрын
What's hippo/hi-po? Some sort of adhesive or sealant? When I finish with a tube of silicone I tape clingfilm around the end. Next time I go to it, I unscrew the nozzle and push the solidified plug out with a screwdriver. As a DIYer, it's usually ages between uses, and it starts to cure from the tip back. If I'm unlucky the whole thing has gone solid!
@johnchadderton66533 жыл бұрын
Hi, can you tell me if after the silicone has dried, and you use the shower, will the weight of you standing there weaken the seal and cause a problem. I once read that you should put some kind of weight on the tray straight after, so it dries in the lowest position. Great videos, keep them coming. Cheers.

Use a little spray bottle with a weak washing up liquid mix. Soak the tool and and the bead. The silicone just falls off the tool and you don't have half the mess, I also sometimes use a bucket and just use the top edge of the bucket to scrape off the tool, find it quicker and less messy than the paper but like u say everyone has they're own way. Love your videos!!!

Looks good. One thing I always do is spray the silicone bead with soapy water before smoothing with the applicator. It makes things much easier as the silicone will not stick to the soapy water. This keeps the applicator and any tiles or other surface clean during the process. I used to really struggle until I learned this technique, now my seals are perfect. Don't bother with masking tape as some people suggest.

Hello James.Thank you for the video. This was helpful. I am glad you were using the 10mm seal because I am nervous if using the 6mm on the sealing tool. I am attempting to reseal a bath this weekend. It was installed years ago on a cradle and there is an overhead shower at one end so I need to get the seal right. I have some questions: 1) Do I need to fill the bath with water to account for load bearing on the final seal? 2) Please tell me why you use 8mm cut off on the nozzle even though you take the excess off. I appreciate there must be a reason but I thought I would try with a smaller cut and then not have to waste so much in the removal. Is it so it fills in the gap deeply? 3) Do you recommend Dow Corning over Mapei Solvent Free Silicon? I have seen mixed reveiws for many sealants on Screwfix. 4) As you mentioned using Hippo as a first seal before the silicone, does that mean I could use the Dow Corning/Mapei sealant to make a flat seal before making a 45 degree seal? Thank you very much in advance. Kate.

To store the tube of silicone, I usually clean the tip like you did, but then give a little squeeze so a little pops out the top, letting that dry then provides a seal for the tube, then when you come to use it again, it just a case of twisting off the nubbin

Try using Fugenboy silicone sealant applicators. They come with "ski's" that you attach to the applicator that it allows it to "ski" over tile joints, thus not getting any ripple in the silicone as you apply past tile joints. Job done.

Lovely job Jimmy! Fugi tools for me and a spray gun of weak washing up liquid solution to spray the bead and finger with after using the Fugi tool. Gently running a soapy wet finger over the bead can smooth out those grout ripples. I also tend to use Big Wipes to prepare the area before applying silicon. Finally after I've finished I gently squeeze the trigger to allow a small amount to protrude from the nozzle and then store the tube nozzle down in the van. Next time I go to use it I pull on the cured piece and I'm ready to go! Have a good weekend.

Great vid again, I use these sort of tools, Fugi I think is the ones I use , anyway do you think trying to silicone a 90degree corner horrible? Like your shower tray or a bath! I mean when you do one side it’s perfect but then doing the opposite side and pulling out of the corner always makes a mess of your perfect 👌 first bead of silicone and you got to keep going over the corner and adding more silicone? I usually do one pull out first and let it cure then do the other opposite side so it doesn’t make a mess of my nice new bead 😂 Just a thought

Good video as always! What if you need to mix different coloured silicone?? Such as white round tray, coloured match to tiles in corners and clear round enclosure. As wet silicone doesn’t stick/seal to dry silicone, how do you do it all at once and get beat joins with no smudging?

To be fair James great job . But if you got yourself a small spray bottle ( old kitchen cleaner one or something ) put about 2-3 squirts of fairy liquid And fill with water to the top . Before you’re about to use the finishing tool , slightly miss coat the area you’ve just worked on then try using your tool . Trust me it’s so much easier in terms of mess and cleaning plus the finish is flawless . I’m just like you mate a plumber ,but a good pal of mine who’s a “mastic man “ showed me how the pros do it 😉 still a lovely job James

not a bad job . I used to do a lot of silicone and like you say the is lots of ways . I used to use a Vitrex smoother (toolstation) and fairy original in a spray bottle always starting at the bottom . I don`t know why but did find for some reasons it had to be the original all others reacted with it in a bad way . On the new properties the cleaners where told only to polish the tiles before we silicone but lots of times they broke the rule and we would have to clean down with methylated spirits , allowing to dry before starting to silicone or I would not stick . I do think a lot is what you get used too . I did try and show my brother how I do it who is a plumber but his answer was cause mine looked so good he will just ask me to come and do it for him . But for me it was one of my jobs in snagging and even if I do enjoy doing silicone when it gets to every day for a couple of months , I was praying for bad weather so all trades would slow down lol . Anyway great video keep them coming .

How to silicone like a plumber: *Ensure fingers are covered in flux *Use a down pipe for a nozzle *pull trigger hard and use uneven pressure whilst pulling and pushing the gun backwards and forwards intermittently. *finish by smearing with dirty sausage fingers, insuring to wipe excess on to finished walls. *Lean something against wall to cover imperfections. *Say a little prayer before leaving it for the next man to worry about. I can see you are using an unusual working process, must be because it's your own gaff ;)
