I learned it on my own and this is how I've done it : I've chosen a 4 chord song that I knew very well, I wrote down the lyrics and the chords above each lyric. I would practice the chords tapping my foot on the ground without overthinking it. Being too rational about music will ruin it for you. Then when the body, the instrument were going rhythmically, I just sang the lyrics from the notebook. My notebook is now full of songs that I know by heart and I am able to create drum patterns on top also. This was my biggest breakthough so far

From my experience you gotta get guitar down to an intermediate level to where the chord changes are second nature then merge the two. Another tip once you're good enough to sing and play together is using a capo to find the key that fits your vocal range. I normally go a half step down for most songs since I have a deeper voice.
@arztbiscuit14333 жыл бұрын
Nice tip
@jacksonwaldon2 жыл бұрын
My vocal range rests in a tenor, but I can go way down to a lower baritone/upper bass and as high as a mid soprano. I don’t think it has to do with how deep or high your voice is, but rather where you voice sits at on your octave. For example, do you find that you talk near a D#? If so, you should probably put your capo on the 11 fret or just tune your guitar a half step down (I suggest you just tune it down so you still have a full fretboard range).

Singing/Playing comes naturally to some folks. It DIDN'T for me. At all. After years and years of very mediocre guitar playing and utter lack of ability to sing along, I realized the "secret" is internalizing rhythm. If you can't EASILY tap your foot along to the beat while playing, you're lost. Learn to do that. Practice that until you can alternate foot taps between left and right feet. With the fundamental timing internalized, singing along will come rather naturally. Basically, I'm agreeing with what Jason said: Get out the metronome and get in tune with the actual timing of the song. The advice Marty gives about focusing on the lyric that goes along with a chord change did NOT work for me - and I attempted that technique for years. Sorry Marty. Got nuthin but love for you, but that approach just didn't work for me. Without a real grasp for the TIMING of music, you are musically lost. Timing has improved my guitar 10 times more in 2 years than 20 years of technique practice.
@ImPewPew44 жыл бұрын
how does a metronome work for a song when songs arent always a perfect bpm?
@NcMuggets4 жыл бұрын

It's nice to know that basically everyone has difficulty with this lol, this is probably the most frustrating part of learning guitar. I remember my grandfather trying to teach when I was younger and he always said that if you couldn't at least hum along as you play these songs you'll never truly progress. Coming from a man that could play every song from the 40's on up to about the late 80's (rock n roll and country at least) I always held on to that advice. Here I am 20 years later finally trying to apply it haha. Oh and damn I was totally unaware that Phillip McKnight (see description) had such a beautiful voice haha

I think the best way to learn is to strum each chord in your progression only once. Then, sing between chords and just make sure, like Marty said, that the right lyric falls on the next chord strum. Just start of slowly and practice, practice, practice until it becomes natural. Then, begin filling in more strums in your progression. Learning to do something the right way, no matter how slow you have to go, is the way to learn something. Speed will always come later, naturally. E.g: "When I FIND" (strum C major chord once at the same time as you sing 'FIND') "myself in times of trouble," (strum G major chord once) "Mother Mary comes to me. SPEAKING" (strum A minor chord once at the same time as you sing 'SPEAKING') "words of wisdom. 'let it BE'" (strum F major chord once at same time as you sing 'BE').

I’m originally a sax player, since nearly birth, and a born again musician on guitar 🎸 at a bit over two years ago. To me, the essential thing that I didn’t do on sax but intentionally do on guitar is to learn songs, for several reasons. * Main point, if all you do is lesson material, on any instrument, I don’t care how mad your skills are, you suck. I was that kind of sax player. I could sight read, show up in the studio at 3am, do my bit in a take or two, and go to bed, I could jam and improvise with the best in the world, but what I couldn’t do was perform for a live audience , because I had no repertoire. Just today, I went to a music shop, tried a guitar I’m interested in, played and sang two tunes by Stevie Ray Vaughan and one by Sheryl Crow; I could do that on the street, in a bar, or even a stadium, but as a sax player, no freakin way. * Also you need to watch those videos of songs being performed by others, and take at least mental notes of what they’re doing when. Even if they have a large band, you can see where they play the main riff, and when it’s more simple to either highlight the singing or more likely make it more playable while they sing. SRV is a great example, because he was a guitar virtuoso, but while singing it was all very simple. * What you don’t want to do, at least in the beginning, is try to sing and play like Paul Simon or Dave Matthews and the like. Those people are gods. * And lastly, same for music as acting, painting, even sports and business, make it your own. Create an original version. If you’re stuck for how to do that, check out other people’s versions online. This is actually easiest. **** Oh, I forgot the most important thing: Break it down! Especially beginners tend to think, everything needs to be like the original. Try to play like the original so you can learn how they transition between chords for example, but change it to your liking. Classical is the best example; people want to play perfect, but according to what. We have zero recordings of Mozart or Beethoven or Bach performing their own music, and at the other extreme-though probably not-we have popular recording artists who play their own music differently from one performance to the next. It would be boring if we all played exactly like the originals, even our own music.

Guys Im finally able to do this. I know its stereotypical but nirvana was the band that taught me to do it. The first full song i could sing and play was In Bloom. My advice is to master each part one at a time. Practice the guitar part over and over and the singing will come way more naturally. Even if your singing sounds like shit and the timing is off, keep going with it and learn from your mistakes. Even mumbling the syllables is great progress Just devote yourself to one or two easy songs. Know them inside and out. I swear its not nearly as hard as it seems. Edit: also forget to mention- play the chords and sing the vocals in your head

Me, having learned basically everything from Marty. “I wonder if he has a video for this topic now that I’m developing as a musician?” Me, finding this video, “yup, there it is. I should’ve known”
