Ahhh, hum and strum, yes. My brain doesn't have to focus on, cords, strumming AND words. Humming kind of flows with the strumming. This helps, feels natural and sounds good. A nice confidence boost. This is fun, thank you One Music School

This was so useful for me! I'm a beginner uke player this year. Strumming patterns and singing is one of the very hardest things for me. Putting them together is just so frustrating. It's good to know these are solid ways to learn how to do them at the same time because I already do some of them! So I'm on the right track!

I'm back from vacation!Thanks Katie! 2.5 months later, I've gotten pretty comfortable playing Lava AND singing to it... A lot of humming to get to get here! My husband is like - What the heck is that song!! All the chords sounded a like to him, until I started humming and singing it, then the tune made sense. Yup, alot of cat howling sounds... Carpe Diem! Never give up! Merci for all your help. -francie-

Hi! Very nice video! I'm a professional singer too, but only been uke-ing for 3 1/2 years. One of my teachers gave me good advice for learning a new song. Listen to 1 or 2 versions of the song. Listen a lot. Listen the original, and some covers too. See what the patterns and repitions of sounds and words are. Then you have a few choices. Start by singing the chords. Sing the melody but substituing the words for the chords names. For the song you were doing (I think I have the chords right, not sure): "F ---- Eb---". etc Then you can, as you said, hum and play. You can also play and SAY the words. Then you put it all together, slowly, like you said in another video. Another GREAT piece of advice I got was mix up the playing order. In other words, if it's an AABA pattern, start with the bridge and play out to they end, then come back to the top. My teacher said people start songs out fine, then a lot ofthe time, it falls apart by the bridge or by the end, especially if the end is slightly different. So the suggestion that you mix it up. Like you said, it's like pieces to a puzzle. Another thing that helps me is, since I have to transpose a lot of the songs that I do, I write it out, then type it out. When I'm just learning to sing a song and not play it, that's a bit of a different process. Hope this helps someone!

Strum and hum makes a lot of sense. Three things are going on in singing and playing: the strumming, the melody, and the words. Strum and hum adds them one at a time. Thanks for the suggestion.

I am so excited! Yesterday I was actually able to do a 6:8 strumming pattern while singing! It was actually to your Rescue by Lauren daigle song! I just had to get into a groove and relax, I had to let go, like I do when I am in my car doing my steering wheel drums lol. When I allow my more feeling/musical brain to take over instead of my thinking brain, it all just clicked! I also want to start playing at church :) .

a problem i have when learning new songs is i sometimes forget to sing some of the words, especially as i change chords - so i guess i kinda naturally do the hum method! I heard your brain can't really multitask, your fingers have to know what they're doing by themselves before you can start singing too - like the first method you mentioned.

@2bcmusic6 жыл бұрын
Tenor, concert, and soprano ukuleles are all tuned the same, so that won't help your pitch problem. Generally the uke will be playing chords an octave higher than the melody. Maybe you're just starting on too high of a note? You may also want to transpose the key to something that is easier to sing.
@juliemparsons6 жыл бұрын
It doesn't matter what you are playing, you need to start with songs that are in the key you can sing and then transpose songs that are too high or low for you into a key that suits you. If you find this too hard try loge.net. You can copy and paste in the song in the key that's wrong for you and then keep changing it until you find one that suits.
