I wish I came across this when it was published. This is the most informative & helpful knowledge drop I’ve seen on the topic to date. You shared what others tease throughout an entire series or channel. Even taking the extra step in recommending exercises to solve specific misconceptions. Thank you! You Rock!!

incredibly, incredibly done video! 🙌🏿 singwise has been one of my favourite vocal blogs for a long time, so it was a treat to see this level of rigor and clarity of explanation in video format. cheers!

It's so helpful to know the physiological explanations as to what's causing our sound to be a certain way. For me, it makes it much easier to understand what's going on and to correct it. Thank you for posting these videos!

Really helpful. I've been one who perceived singing through the nose as more resonant and was actively trying to develop that quality.

I appreciate how your videos are based on facts and cause-effect relationships, rather than rooted in vocal "mysticism", which is still far too common in vocal pedagogy.

Thank you. My aim as a teacher is to ensure that the vocal mechanism is not a mystery so that singers don't view technique as a 'stab in the dark.' I believe that it helps them find success. It's just my teaching style.

You just hit something right on the nail that I noticed in college. when I mixed soft palate or voice and diction exercise with my warm-ups I found my sound improved greatly! KAH GA etc!

Can I just say that you are awesome! Thank you for uncovering lots of mysteries about the voice. I am a big fan of SingWise! Could you do a video on tips for navigating the passagio?

For some reason, I'm only seeing this comment now! (Sorry about that.) Thanks for the compliments. Yes, I do plan to discuss the passaggio in a video at some point.

I'm planning to record a video on the 'open throat' sometime in the near future., and lifting the soft palate will be part of that. In the meantime, the inhaled /k/, the lift of the zygomatic muscles (cheek muscles ) up under the eyes, pinching the nose, and ensuring that your mental concept of the tone doesn't include thinness and nasality should get you going and hopefully help a bit.

Can you have hypO-nasal singing on a vowel? how can you tell if your soft palate is being lifted too much?
@singwisevocals8 жыл бұрын
Hyponasality would refer to a tendency to denasalize sounds that should be nasalized (M, N, and NG). The soft palate should be elevated for all vowels in English, so hyponasality isn't really a possibility. I'm not sure that the soft palate can be lifted too much. It can only be lifted to the point where the velopharyngeal port is completely sealed off. We're more likely to have problems with the soft palate being incompetent or failing to move up and down with precision and swiftness, leading to hypernasality.

I was taught to just have a 'pleasant expression' (lifting cheeks, 'smile with eyes') to rid of nasality; since the zygomatic muscles are connected to the soft pallet (somehow). But definitely, gotta feel instead of listen!
@singwisevocals8 жыл бұрын
That is what many singers are taught - that a lift of the zygomatic muscles (the 'smile under the eyes') will help elevate the soft palate. There is actually no muscular connection between the two, so, scientifically/anatomically/physiologically speaking, the movement of the zygomatic muscles doesn't directly affect the elevator muscles of the velum. However, the pleasant expression is associated with pleasant imagery, emotions, and sensations. And the body's response to pleasant aromas (e.g., like smelling a rose), laughter, a breath of surprise, emotions of joy, etc. is to open up the throat, which includes a lifting of the soft palate and a widening at the pillars of the fauces. Sometimes, that is all that the singer needs to help ensure velar elevation. But sometimes it's not.
