possibly a silly question: when I hear a guy and a girl singing in harmony it is always much more easier for me to "ear" the girl rather than the notes the guy is singing, that for me remains a nice mysterious background I'm totally unable to reproduce. Is it somehow..."normal" or my brain is really deranged? ;)
@oandoduo7 жыл бұрын
E. Piovani, that is very normal! The girl's part is usually higher and so it stands out more and it is easier for our ear to hear the top notes. It takes practice to be able to pick out the lower 'guy's part. Try breaking it down to each note: sing the girls part and then drop the pitch until you settle onto the guy's note. In our tutorial for Fleetwood Mac's 'I Don't Want To Know', we demonstrate two parts separately first and then put them together, try practicing along with the video! kzbin.info/www/bejne/ep7Qo4WCfZWga6M

Many thanks for this. Something that has helped me immensely in trying to sing harmonies is to follow some advice I read or heard that suggested thinking of a harmony part as an alternative melody. In other words, instead of thinking of building harmonies by trying to shadow or think of a harmony for each individual note of the melody, think more broadly, about an alternative 'tune' to the main melody.

Not going to lie, I wish I had instructors like you two growing up. Now that I'm an adult and when I look back on it, I didn't have great chorus teachers in elementary, middle, and high school. Sure, they taught the standard music basics and vocal exercises. However, they just did the bare minimum of what was being asked of them. One of those above and beyond things that just isn't really taught, is how to find your own voice and to feel comfortable and confident in your sound. And then to practice learning and building comfortableness in your own unique sound. Everyone typically has a singing style that they're just naturally better at and more suited for. I just really wish someone would have reinforced that it's okay to sound different from others. That as a singer, you will need to be able to match notes with others, and at other times, be able to diverge and sing notes that others are not. In fact, it's a beginning principle for many more advanced techniques that you'll learn later on. However, still to this day, I hate my voice if I'm singing solo. I don't mind it if I'm singing along with someone or in a group. But as soon as the music stops, I immediately stop. It made it difficult for me to trust in my voice and to harmonize with others. As such, I instinctively find and simply match the notes of others.

I now better understand harmony from a musical notes point of view. My question is, how do I translate this to the vocal side. Using my actual vocal chords, throat, chest and whatever else is involved to bring out the harmony? Please forgive me if this is a silly question. I seriously want to learn. Would greatly appreciate your feedback.

Hi Julian, thanks for your comment! There’s not really anyway to improve at singing except to practice over and over. It really helps to record yourself and listen back because the way you sound in your head is not always how it sounds to other people. Play the notes on an instrument and then sing them back. Also, once you get the sound of the third above harmony in your head, try harmonising along to any recording with a simple melody. Happy singing!

I have a question. In the song that you sung why does the chord changes from C major to G major and not B major when the next note was B and not G?
@oandoduo3 жыл бұрын
Good question! The key of C major has no sharp or flat notes. The B Major chord has the notes B, D# and F#, which means it is not 'diatonically' in the key of C major. In the key of C Major the diatonic chords are C major, D minor, E minor, F major, G major, A minor and B diminished. Diatonic means that only notes from the parent key (in this case C major) are used. Although the melody begins on the root note (C) of the C major chord it moves to the major third note (B) of the G major chord. The singer does not always have to sing the root note of the chord that is accompanying it - that would make music very boring! ☺️ Does that make sense?

@oandoduo3 жыл бұрын
You will very rarely hear only fifths, but sometimes you'll hear them in passing. It is a very open, neutral sound because it it the 3rds and 7ths that give chords their flavor! 'Power chords' on the guitar are made up of just the root and fifth notes.

Lovely sound, but of course when you say a third here you always mean a major third??
@oandoduo6 жыл бұрын
Hey Alan, thanks for watching! When you sing a third above a changing melody, you actually often switch between major and minor thirds (and sometimes fourths) to better suit the accompanying chords. In our example, 'Bye Bye Love' by The Everly Brothers, it starts as a Major Third (E above C) and then changes to a Minor Third (D above B).

If you don't have anyone to pratice or a piano, you can try this: Pick up a song that you know very well, listen with your earphones and focus on the Chorus, wich is the part when most of the harmonys happens. Then you try to sing the other voice, the third or the second, not the principal voice. Extra tip: duets with couples are the best to do it, because it's easier to learn when is female and male voice, so your ear can separate the voices better. Or you can choose a music group with many voices, as Little Mix, One Direction or BTS, where the voices of the singers are very different from each other.

If I understand correctly, when a member of a band comes in to accompany the lead singer and he or she is singing the same lyrics, they are not singing the same exact notes? If they are singing a third higher or lower, wouldn’t that technically mean they are singing in a different key?

Hello Charlie, thank you for watching! If the accompanying singer is singing the same notes, both singers are in unison. If they are singing different notes, that is harmony. A key is made up of seven different notes (a scale). For example, a G Major scale (notes: G A B C D E F#) tells you what notes are in the key of G Major. So if the melody is singing one of those notes (say a B) and the accompanying singer is singing a third higher (on the note D) they are both singing notes from the same key, but not the same notes. Does that make sense? If the accompanying singer is singing a D# (which is a major third above B), then they would be in in a different key because D# is not one of the notes in the key of G Major. Hope that helps!

For some reason, harmonies sometimes come easy to me, but only when they're really simple, like the example you did in the video. When I heard the melody, I was able to somehow immediately know what the harmony was going to be. Do you know why this might happen? Also, how do you know if a harmony will be up a third or down a third from the melody? And I've noticed in songs sometimes the harmony doesn't follow the same pattern as the melody all the time, so how do you know when this happens?

Hello Ellory! Often the more familiar you are with the melody you are trying to harmonise, the more easily you will be able to find the harmony. With simple examples it can be easier because you are very definite about the melody. The great thing about harmonising a melody is that there are really very few rules, but many choices. It is up to you whether you want to harmonise above the melody or below, or do something that sounds good that doesn't necessarily follow the melody exactly. Singing in thirds is a good starting place, however, because it will almost always sound good and is a familiar sound in popular music. In this video we did for @Jacob's Vocal Academy we give some examples of different types of harmonies: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mpXZmaeNaNeAm9E Hope that helps!
