I can sing to pitch but the "Follow me into" part is more of a reinforced falsetto. Once I reach "the desert" I feel comfortable using the chest voice. I'm not sure how to safely convert that to full voice for those higher parts. It's the same issue with the high part of Man in the Box. Any suggestions appreciated.

Is he adding a crackle? I get that up in the nasal cavity. I can't really figure out distortion. When I ad the pharyngeal resonance I can sound pretty raspy and it doesn't hurt at all. I learned to sing Bel Canto and migrated to Pop/Rock. It took a couple years though.

The crackle/rasp that I get is coming from my false folds which is I am assuming what he is doing

Singing like Cornell is simple, but it's far from easy. You have to really really work on breath control, compression, brightness, and annunciation in the high range. His voice itself isn't as unique as Layne Staley's or Eddie Vedder's or Freddie Mercury's. It's actually pretty standard. But as a vocalist he is superior to all of them (except Freddie) because his technique is thru the roof.

Layne looses vocal form trying to keep up with Chris in right turn..Layne uses Celine dion technis. Very standard short cut singing
