After 3 months of training and vocal exercise. I have finally been able to shift into subharmonic. From how it feels, the throat is vibrating very strongly, this might be very good for deepening the voice. How did I reach it? Vocal fry is probably the only way to shift into it, after you do it for quite sometime you can do it on demand. I realised that in order to do it it's all about feeling and putting your throat in a position that will make your vocal chords to vibrate in those different registers. What I'm saying is, all you gotta do is play with your throat muscles until your vocal chords shift naturally to the subharmonic. A better way to explain this is: I keep a tone and shift my throat muscles to sound deep yet still keep the tone I want, that's how it feels for me. This technique isn't talked about alot and I think it's because it's hard to explain, similar to how to move your ears or how to make a burp, it's just something you somehow stumble upon, and in order to achieve it you just gotta trial and error. Goodluck to you all, this type of singing is fascinating.

A trick is a good way to describe it, so respect for being honest about it. People don't seem to realize that the occasional note below low C does not a real bass make. A real bass sings with ease, power, and tone on G2, F2, E2, and possibly D2 as well, all day every day, in full chest voice. Any baritone can slip into a modal fry register to crank out something below the staff. I personally find E2 and D2 harder than lower notes, because they sit at the bottom of the chest, but not so low as to really require a registral shift. I think of it as the bottom passaggio.

@andrewlilico22189 ай бұрын
This makes more sense to me than most of the other videos I've seen on this. He seems to be saying "subharmonic signing" just means mixing vocal fry and chest, to get some extra notes at the bottom without getting too pure with the fry (and hence indistinct with the pitch and poor on the vocal quality) too fast. That makes sense. I'm not sure what that has to do with flipping down an octave, though. Why not just sing low then lower, mixing in as little fry as you can, then when you've got that try a little lower, and bingo! One day you'll be singing a G1 like Glenn Miller? What's flipping down an octave as you add the fry got to do with anything? What am I missing, here?
@ThisDude2347 ай бұрын
I think that doesn't work because we have a limit to chest voice, adding the fry is what allows for it (hence the octave part). I suppose u could try and lessen the amount of fry and try to get it in chest, but you're probably gonna lose sum of the power as you go deeper.
@zilipphimbardo61386 жыл бұрын
Dude I’m so happy that I came across this video. I heard so much about subharmonics and how you need to do vocal fry to achieve it and this whole time I didn’t even know what vocal fry. Simply put some chest voice in it and within seconds of this video I was singing really low. Thanks you so much!!
@drewconleymusic6 жыл бұрын
Hey David, I've been doing subharmonic singing for quite a while and I've managed to make the next step in the subharmonic series. Since the subharmonic series mirrors the overtones series the next step is an octave and a perfect fifth below the fundamental. It's like doing what you're already doing but finding the sweet spot between having the octave and losing it. There is a very specific spot where you have an octave and a fifth below the fundamental. For example if you sang a G2, then used subharmonics to get down to G1, then balanced it just right you'd get a C1.

Could you watch my video on my page and give me some pointers, and practice techniques. Great tutorial and info David! However, I have to point out, that I'm fairly sure one of the things you've said is incorrect. I don't think that the subharmonic technique is produced by simultaneously singing two notes a perfect fifth apart. I've heard this one mentioned a lot so I don't blame you for mentioning it. I've also noticed that often when this idea is mentioned the person saying it is unsure of how it works and how to explain it. This "missing fundamental" idea is a psychological phenomenon where the brain hears the two notes (or more) , and thinks they must be harmonics of a lower note. If you hear any demonstrations of this, you can use a spectral analyser to actually see if that note is there or not. And also, how would the two vocal folds just happen to sing two different notes at once, and always have them perfectly a perfect fifth (excuse the pun) apart? That doesn't really make sense. What I believe is a more likely is that the subharmonics are produced by the vocal folds not vibrating evenly - only hitting each other after every second cycle. This would produce a frequency half of what the regular fundamental is, giving us the undertone we hear. Both of the phenomena I mentioned are addressed by Adam Neely in his video "SUBHARMONIC Music (Anomalous Low Frequency Vibration)". The second phenomena is also demonstrated in mathematician Matt Parker (standupmaths)'s video "The Tuning Fork Mystery: unexpected vibrations", which he did with physicist Hugh Hunt. In both of these videos they address the fact that the second phenomena will only happen under the condition where a tuning fork (or another vibrating object) is held in such a way that it doesn't hit another surface during every cycle (3:15 in the Adam Neely video and 6:00 in the Matt Parker video). This has lead me to believe that relaxing the vocal cords to sing subharmonics is performing the same phenomena - the vocal folds are only hitting each other every second cycle. Hopefully all of the stuff I've mentioned made sense and is interesting to people, and also helps to dispel what I believe to be a myth. Of course if anyone has some counterarguments to my point I'd love to hear them, and further the knowledge of all of us on the topic. PS: If any physicists/human anatomists/other researchers have any time to conduct some studies on this, that would be awesome to see.

harmonic series is a collection of overtones that go in this order: the fundamental, fundamental x2, then x3, x4, x5, x6 etc, which sound like: the fundemental, an octave above, an octave and a 5th, 2 octaves, 2 octaves and a maj3, 2 oct and a 5th, 2 oct and a half-sharp 7, 3 oct, etc. whilst the subharmonic series doesn't actually exist acoustically, it can be emulated by using techniques like this to skip cycles of the fundamental. for example, by using fry to cancel out every other oscillation of the fundamental of his voice, this fella has emulated dividing his fundamental note by 2, dropping him an octave. if you divide it by 3, you go down an octave and a 5th, divide by 4, 2 octaves... seem familiar? it's an exact opposite reflection of the harmonic series. not sure if this will help anyone or be interesting or eloquently put enough to actually understood by anyone, but I just had to put it out here because maths in music is fucking whack and worth looking in to.

When i attempt to do this my vocal pitch monitor puts me like in the seventh octave. Am i doing it wrong or it is the App?
@brodofraggins5 жыл бұрын
So is it basically a difference tone? I know a similar thing occurs when playing guitar. I noticed that when playing a D chord, if I didn't mute the A string, I would hear the Low D2 as though I was playing in drop D. When I researched it, it is due to the difference between the frequencies of A3 and the D3 (220 and 146.8) is 73.2 which is approximately a D2 (73.42).

start w vocal fry then slowly bring in your chest voice from a “hum” and/or start w chest voice but slip into fry.

I just wonder if any baritone exercise these techniques, can they sound like a bass or bass profondo?
@DavidKahnSings3 жыл бұрын
Probably on certain notes but there may be gaps, with great arrangement could still be neat tho

Hello, I have a problem with finding a subharmonic tone. I tryed to sing with fried voice and add some chest voice slightly and also first chest voice and after that add vocal fry, but nothing happened. Please can anyone explain me what to do? Step by step, how to find subharmonic please? Thank you

Do you be able to slide from high of the natural voice to lowest notes of the subharmonics and vice versa? How do you think it's possible?

Excuse me mate, I usually talk with A F2, but when I do the subharmonic it becomes g1, Why it does that?
@DavidKahnSings2 жыл бұрын
everyone’s voice is different! you should be able to change pitch if you practice slowly

If I can sing down to about a G1 with chest voice on most days, would this in theory allow me to sing down to a G0? I really need to learn this technique.
@allistercrow24055 жыл бұрын
In theory yes, in actuality probably not. Subharmonics have to be done with 100% comfortable chest notes, and begin to lose tone as you get lower. If there's any strain at all for a G1, it is unlikely you'll hit a G0. Take me for instance, my chest voice goes down to a C2 on any day and down to a A1 - B1 if I'm super sick or something. Despite this, I can only subharmonic to an F1 or E1, this is because I have to pit the tiniest bit of pressure on my larynx to push lower, and that tiny bit of pressure disables my use of subharmonics, I hope that makes sense.
@brodofraggins5 жыл бұрын
@@allistercrow2405 ok, that makes sense, but even singing down to an A0 or B0 would be cool
@allistercrow24055 жыл бұрын
@@brodofraggins yeah it would be, and it's been done before. if a B1 is super comfortable for you (super jealous if it is btw lol) then you should be able to work down to a B0. it wont be easy though, and it'll take quite a bit of practice. the technique i use to hit 0 octave notes it phonation (inhale) and it does work pretty well and is a good alternative to subharmonics.
@brodofraggins5 жыл бұрын
@@allistercrow2405 it's been a lot of practicing and time I suppose. In college we sang Mauler's symphony no. 2 and it has a Bb1. Lowest note I ever got to sing in a Choral arrangement. Had a hard time with it back then though. Now I can sing it pretty easily with solid volume. I only recently stumbled across subharminics so I imagine I have a lot to learn, but yeah. I saw Video on inhale singing as well. I think I'll stick with subharminics for now lol
@allistercrow24055 жыл бұрын
@@brodofraggins Personally I can inhale with a way better tone than subharmonics, but I've also been doing it MUCH longer and can get down to A0 with it, though there's really no use in singing that low it's still a neat party trick. I tend to only inhale down to C1 in most situations. With subharmonics lowest I've hit is a D1 but that's on very rare occasions, usually just a G1 or maybe an F1.

I'm a baritone. My chest vocal range is D2 - B4. I wanna know if theres any way of workout to go lower. (I wish I could reach a B1, Bb1 or even A1 chest, is it possible?)
