In this video, we learn about Vocal Compression and whether Vocal Fry is a viable, safe substitute or addition to distorted singing.
Sing With Compression or Vocal Fry 4K - Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy
This is a very misunderstood concept.
Often, people think that in order to get glottal compression, distorted compression or vocal fry, they need to squeeze off the cords themselves to a point where the cords literally “rattle”.
And while this may be a fair concept in understanding how to “distress” the cords, it falls far short of explaining how to do this safely using actual vowel sounds and how to put it into songs.
In this video, I give a short tutorial on the difference and what is required to sing with distortion, growl, overdrive and many of the other names that the sound has been given.
Singing with compression is like an extreme sport. We must be very very careful with our voices or we could develop a node or a polyp that could cost us our voices.
For those interested, come join me and we can reason together.

A lot of these rock singers back in the day have lost their voices like you said Ken they didn't use their voice properly or strained themselves to Much by screaming or damaging their vocals see Ken your voice had held up because you've used it the correct way and know how to sing properly without damaging your voice this is why your the man and the master

Compression kind of came to me naturally out of necessity, since I have asthma and easily start coughing when I use a lot of air, didn't really think about it untill I saw this clip the first time. 😅

I was a musician on the road playing nightly in the 90s, we didn't have a clue how to sing. I'm in my 50s now and learned how to sing a few years ago, huge difference i hit notes I used to struggle with, I wish i took vocal lessons in my 20s. I don't think many musicians but enough emphasis on proper vocal technique. Thanks Ken love your teaching.

I could tell that Gabby was far too tight in her vocal tract, I recognized the sound I used to produce. I love the bits after with The Trooper and Welcome to the Jungle, two favourites I like to sing, as well. Bruce Dickenson is an all time favourite singer, one of many, but I started by trying to sing along to Iron Maiden. It took a long time before I attempted vocal distortion, but Bruce was a great place to start, as he will throw in grit in a line and take it out again. Now, I can sing in a similar way to many different singers and styles. Including extreme metal vocals, which do need to be taught and learned correctly. Otherwise, you WILL hurt your vocal tract, as I have heard from interviews with extreme vocalists like Will Ramos.

ive been doing music for just under 2 years now on and off due to confidence issues, I really want to get into singing rock, this was really helpful, its also made me realise that ive been doing some of these things unconsciously already which i think is a good thing? Ive tried doing that Fry thing before to little to no avail usually it just feels wrong to me. Unfortunately im not good with terminology so i always struggled to know where to start or what people mean when they say 'all you gotta do is this (followed by instructions of words i dont understand)' means nothing to me. finally found someone who actually makes sense to me. thats not to bash other musicians/vocal coaches but i think you might be the best ive found so far.

I'd love to see some analysis of some specific things singers are known for with their voices, and whether this is something obtainable or will it just wreck you. Ex. - David Lee Roth's or Ian Gillan's kind of banshee scream, Brian Johnson's or Dan McCafferty's constant distortion, etc. Thanks!

Oh good lord she is amazing. Can you fix a 55 year old man that smokes too much? I've been jamming with a band I was in during the 90's. I realize now that I was compressing way too much, but didn't have a good answer or reason why this was happening. I can still wail, just lose it after around 5 songs. I call it "trying too hard".

run like your hair is on fire😂 I have lessons with a coach who can demonstrate coal fry well. I've been waiting of you to show it too. I have a course from you that I bought years ago. Of course, I prefer to work with a real coach. You can do so much damage alone. I notice that when I do specific exercises wrong on my own. I'm just learning the part of Chinchilla's "Fingers" What a voice. But I think I sing too much open throat. It sounds a bit "ng"-like, only more open. Like a Duck, but not quite as bad :-) when the part comes with the high notes. The high notes are not the problem, it's more the vowel placement. She doesn't even have her mouth open that wide. It's tough. I have absolute respect for you. Above all, how many years were you on stage?. I will go to your course again from time to time. I have an excellent coach. She is great and demonstrates everything from Chinchilla to Kelly Clarkson very well. I'm always amazed. I even had a coach where my voice got hoarse at some point. I can write stories about it. I think I misunderstand open throat all the time. It doesn't hurt to keep going back to videos demonstrating proper breathing technique.

please make a video where you talk about the sound pressure in decibels, since many of us have the false idea that having that sound in the voice is shouting with a lot of volume, please sing a high note with power in front of a decibel reader and thus know the real volume of the voice and not a false perception which leads us to sing screaming having the belief that it should be like this.... thank you very much... I love gabby.

Very nice Ken! This is so important for folks to learn. BTW, I'd like to know more about what you mean about not going from smooth to distorted sounds? Or maybe I'm misunderstanding you and it's ok to do it a certain way. B/c I occasionally bring in distortion from a smooth sound to add more dynamics & feeling into the lyrics w/no problem. Maybe it's cuz I'm doing it properly? I don't know. What is the way you suggest going from a smooth sound to distorted? Thx!

The KTVA forum is a great community of singers currently doing the KTVA method. The forum also has areas that are open to the general public, so that non-students can interact with students to discuss how the KTVA course is working for them. The focus in the forums is on how to implement the KTVA methods and how to navigate the KTVA course. The moderators may introduce newcomers to concepts and basic singing information as taught in KTVA KZbin videos, however the forums are not a substitute for the KTVA course itself. Basic evaluations of someone’s vocal potential are available, preferably utilizing one of Ken’s scales from his free KZbin Videos or from the course itself from students. It is not a 24 hour unlimited helpline. You can join the discussion by enrolling, it's free. Check it out!: forum.kentamplinvocalacademy.com/

Hello Ken! I only have a question, didnt know where to put it, so I did it here! What do you think of the new singer in SKID ROW? Is he a good singer...I mean, is he gonna get a voice in the later like a croc? Or, do you think that he has a voice who can sing like in 30 years or so? Regards Martin

I'll be honest I loved Gabriela's tone when she was using that destructive technique (then again, it's Gabriela she's got a golden tone seriously what a talent). So I'm thinking, wouldn't it make sense to use those techniques (pinching, consonants, etc) in a studio setting where you can take breaks in a bar or two (maybe say for narrative purposes)? Not talking about a live setting, you could use healthy sustainable technique there, just thinking about a studio recording. And if so, could these unhealthy techniques be considered mostly situational and perhaps "extended" or "exotic" in that you could probably use them under idealized conditions to achieve a specific effect with the prior knowledge of the risks and limitations of said techniques? Basically just being there as an "edge case" and really used perhaps in one line or two in a song every now and then if you really aren't convinced by normal healthy approaches? Maybe I'm thinking too much about it, but darn it Gabriela just sounded way too good (which again, she always does)

No. It's ALWAYS better as a singer to use correct technique, no matter whether singing live or in the studio, or for how long. Any singer using poor technique is not doing their voice any favours and is also embedding bad habits. Far better to learn to sing correctly so it becomes automatic to use correct technique at all times.
