I've been skating for as long as I can remember, learned on hockey skates. The only styles I would use with any regularity (for obvious reasons when you consider speed, padding, etc) were the basic and lemon ... but mostly the basic. It was almost always the quickest way to both keep track of the opposing player and potentially get the puck back. ANYWAY, I mostly came here to figure out how to explain how I skate backwards... it's always been so natural for me I just never really thought about it. PS: Was a defenseman, backwards skating, at least at that age, was not a very common skill for the forwards.

Almost forgot to tell you, great tutorial Tiago! :D I'm currently working on my backwards skating, and I find it very useful. Today I was finally able to do the criss-cross thing, thank to your tutorial! I'm still having trouble with turning my torso to point my shoulder back, but that's getting better too. I don't know if I've already told you, but you have a gift to teach! As I said in a comment thread, I realized recently that I have been having such a hard time skating backwards due to a couple of BAD tutorials, where the guy insisted on saying that you had to put all your weight back. No wonder why I felt so insecure. It's taken me a lot of practice, falling, and watching different videos to realize that was a bad advice, and find out my proper weight distribution and balance. But you explain it perfectly in a 3 minutes video! You're helping a lot with your tutorials ^^ Saludos y GRACIAS!

Bavmorda Wow! I'm very glad you managed to improve your backwards skating thanks to my tutorial! this makes me feel very happy! :) keep practicing, and you'll manage to do all these things without even thinking :) May I ask you what video you watched, where the person told you tu put your weight on the back please? I'm just curious :) thanks a lot :)

Also when learning to skate backwards, make sure that your hips can move... if you have an anterior pelvic tilt with stiff hips, it will be impossible (feet glued to ground) and you'll keep falling forwards. And with criss-cross and the like train both sides. Muscles imbalances in the pelvis are not fun.

Yiey! At last!! I just switched to a rockered setup and it feels soooo good, but it really makes me wanna be more fluent in my backward skating. I think this video will help me a lot hehe :D Edit: Oh I forgot! About protection, have you tried the G-Form kneepads? Those yellow ones that looks like some exo-skeleton or something :) They're supposed to be really flexible but get hard when you fall on them. I haven't been able to try them out (because as usual no shop near me has them x) ) but I really like how they look, even though they are a bit expensive.
@TiagoInlineSkater7 жыл бұрын
Jonatan OTW you switched to a rockered setup?! welcome to the club, it will become an addiction, you'll never want to go back to a flat setup, trust me ; mwahahaha! \@o@/ yes, I have those ^^ ( you can even see them in my inline skating setup video :) ) what's amazing with them is that you can complet forget you're wearing protection, cuz they are super light and easily adapt to the shape of your body :)

Tiago Inline Skater Haha true!! I don't think I'll ever go back, it's just so nice to have so much immediate control over movement in all directions! Of course you have to feel it in your body to learn properly, but tutorials can help a lot to get there... or to do it wrong '^^ I've realized lately that I'm struggling badly with the whole skating backwards feeling, due to a few tutorials where they said you had to keep all your weight back 😕 I've had to change that whole notion to begin to feel comfortable. I don't know what they were thinking, those people usually make great tutorials... Well, thank god we have Tiago to help :)

Whenever I try to do the lemons, swizzle & crossovers, my skates feel really heavy and I really have to use a lot of energy to make it glide. And by the time I make it glide, my feet hurts and it stops halfway.. I can't even skate for long. Is this because fitness skates are heavier than freestyle skates?

Nicely done. Question: In your intro you kept turning left and right but didn't change shoulder you were looking through - wouldn't you normally look though right shoulder when turning right and left shoulder when turning left? Or does that only matter if you are doing cross-over for both sides?

Nice, but I missed backward crossover and backleg hip-ass thrust-extension technique (a bit like criss cross but with less criss and going faster).
@TiagoInlineSkater7 жыл бұрын
Hip-ass-trust-extension technique? :O
@clray1237 жыл бұрын
That's when you go backwards in a fairly open and low stance (feet spaced well apart) and then you shift your upper body weight back and forth (and a little up and down) in the pelvis, putting pressure on the leading leg which then slides forth from under you, catching up with the trailing leg in order to shorten the stance, then repeat. The trailing leg does a slight snake motion for propulsion, but the back leg much less so. You can gain more speed than with full blown freestyle criss cross.
@Bavmorda7 жыл бұрын
I don't get it either, could you link some video? I'm curious
@clray1237 жыл бұрын
Yes, the leading leg would be moving away from the trailing leg (which does the snaking motion) for a short while - you pump with your body weight from the hip/pelvis/buttocks on the leading leg (the foot also goes a bit toward the trailing leg's side, not straight back, it's like doing a scissor with upper thighs, letting the leading leg slide out - at this point the trailing foot is oriented with heel toward the inside). Then you relax the muscles/remove weight from leading leg and the trailing leg catches up again, making it possible to repeat this sequence. Sorry, I don't have a video, but this is how I learned to skate backward at moderate speeds (as opposed to very slow using full criss cross or lemons). Another option for speed is backward crossover, but the advantage of this technique (for a novice) is that both feet remain on the ground. Also backward crossover sort of makes you turn, which is not desirable. This technique is also quite relaxed - I can go multiple kilometers using it.
@clray1237 жыл бұрын
Here's a way to try it without skates to get the idea: stand with your legs in yoga warrior I pose (front leg bent, back leg extended straight behind) and then do pelvic thrusts back and forth, shifting your weight between front and back.

Tiago, thanks so much for all your videos! Cheers from Brazil! I want to get back to inline skating after several years, what are your impressions on Oxelo Fit 5 for a beginner?
@TiagoInlineSkater7 жыл бұрын
@Bavmorda7 жыл бұрын
I'm no expert, but if you can't afford decent skates (apart from looking at the second hand market; you may find barely worn good skates at affordable prices, you'd be surprised!), if you buy Oxelos I'd go for the freeride model, never the fitness. Cheap fitness skates are the worst you can wear while learning, they're too soft; they don't support your ankles and feet at a correct position and you can easily hurt yourself, as well as don't learn your movement properly. Best scenario, they will slow your progress a lot and they'll make you feel very frustrated. Look for a freeskate/freeride/freestyle skate that offers you good support of feet and ankles. The extra money will be totally worth it ;)
@LuizEnger7 жыл бұрын
Thanks guys. The problem is that Seba FR X costs more than 4 times Oxelo's Fit 5 here in Brazil and my size is out of stock, and Decathlon sells only Oxelo's fitness model. I'll keep an eye on used skates, but if I don't find anything, I'll probably get Oxelo's anyway. EDIT: what about Traxart Zephir? Found a used one for the same price as Oxelo Fit 3.
@Bavmorda7 жыл бұрын
Looks like a fitness skate too... Same problem. You could look for the Powerslide Bronx? It's an entry level skate, but it seems to have good support, and it is from a good brand. I've found it in an online shop in Brazil at first sight (in Spain they're sold also in Decathlon. Maybe you could ask them if they can bring the freeride models to your shop?); I'm not familiar with the Brazilian currency, but it costs 799¿?. It may be more expensive than Oxelo fit, but if you can, I'd make the effort. If you can't, I guess fitness is better than nothing (and Decathlon makes decent products in their prize ranges), but seriously, you'll feel very limited. They're not good for your ankles, not good for your skating, and they're not prepared for any rough treatment or precise movement...
@LuizEnger7 жыл бұрын
Bavmorda I see, thanks for all the info. And what about Razors Cult Street? I know it's a different type of skate, but I found it with an affordable price. Sorry for being a bother lol

How about a wheel rotation video
@TiagoInlineSkater7 жыл бұрын
Only done that once in my entire life :'D !
@Bavmorda7 жыл бұрын
Wow, either you have lots of money to spend on wheels, or you really skate, slide and brake in a very well balanced way! :O I've been limited to skating on really soft wheels lately, and rotation was mandatory every two skating sessions (on the bright side, that's given me the chance to taste different rockering configurations, thanks to the irregular wearing). Finally I've got myself a set of 82A from a decent brand, and boy what a difference! To Dire Wolfy: I've read some useful tutorials with pics and schemes, where they explain every way of rotating wheels, either for keeping the flat configuration or to try other ways, always maximizing the life of the wheels; I'll look for them and tell you something ;)
@Bavmorda7 жыл бұрын
Here they are. First, the most frequent way of rotating them for wearing out the wheels evenly, thus prolonging the wheels life:. skating.thierstein.net/Knowledge/Inline_Skating_Rollerblading_Information_Wheel_rotation.html.
