39 years old started ice skating again 4 months ago (ice skated twice around 13 years old) roller skated about 100 times as a kid...I'm getting much more comfy on ice with K2 ice skates...my forward crossovers are pretty decent backwards I can crossover in 1 direction the opposite is a total no go...I get my ice skate off the ice now quite a bit on crossovers which I couldn't do at all 3-4 sessions ago

For any new sport I tried, I'd tell myself to "accept the fact that you WILL fall". Basically getting rid of the fear that you MAY fall, and just basically make yourself fall and practice falling first 😉 once that fear is out of the way, it won't hold you back!

I absolutely fell in love with your videos. You explain everything so clearly and show each technique in different angles. I'm about to turn 30 in a few months and I found out how fun ice skating can be. I used to surf every weekend back home in Puerto Rico, so moving to a cold state where surfing is not pleasant anymore, I was worried I wouldn't find a sport that brought me the same joy. Turns out skating gives me a similar feeling like flying over the water! I've already looked up classes in a nearby rink, and have been watching your videos every day! Again, thank you so much for your effort and time to make these amazing tutorials for us!

THANK YOU! I've gotten so confidant with recreational skating that I can keep up with those tiny hockey kids that zoom around the ice... but every time I watch a backwards lesson, I'd get totally stuck. The detail you made about form, and skating on the front curve of your blades? THAT was my issue! Good teachers don't make assumptions that beginners know those implicit/subconscious things.

A good one that my coach taught me is to do a backward bubble, and half way lift your foot up and place it back beside your other foot. This creates momentum and it’s really useful!
@kourtnie1 Жыл бұрын
can you explain the term bubble
@pandaoven7808 Жыл бұрын
@@kourtnie1 yup, its where you make a circle/bubble shape in the ice going backwards/forwards. You bend your knees and turn your feet both about 45 degrees away from eachother, like first position in highland dancing if you know what that is. Then you stand up whilst pushing your knees down, that makes you go forwards/backwards. You then point your feet back together, making a semicirle on each foot which makes a circle together :)

Thanks for the tutorial, I have been watching your videos for quite some time already. Do you have recommendations on how to improve backward one foot glides, especially holding the balance? I am really struggling with those for quite some time, especially on the left foot. I think I am somehow stuck there. I got the backward crossovers figured out pretty good, but the one foot glide is a real obstacle for me.
@emitty54694 жыл бұрын
Do you mean one foot glides going backwards or forwards? You should have your weight pressured to the middle of your blade and you should look forward/not lean back.
@cathylasky69624 жыл бұрын
Hello inge, I am wondering the same thing. I have been working on backward one-foot glides for a year now and I can't seem to get them. My problem is that (for example skating on my right foot) I seem to curve to the left (i.e. on my inside edge) and do not go straight backward. I've had many of my LTS coaches and private coaches try and figure it out, but I'm still doing it. I'm able to skate forward on one foot, but something about the backward one-foot glides is just eluding me. Coach Julia, is there anything you can suggest that will fix my problem?
@Emeraldcow4 жыл бұрын
I'm working on single leg gliding too. One leg is stronger than the other. I think it has to do with the tightest and stiffness of the boot and trying to push into the opposite side that you tend to veer into
@thesu4 жыл бұрын
@@cathylasky6962 I'm in the same boat! I've worked on weight transfer, the placement of my free foot/leg (eg, don't hold too much tension, lift my foot with even pressure through the middle), etc. Also, very intimidating to practice when there are more than five people on the ice.
@cathylasky69624 жыл бұрын
@@thesu We should start a support group! Haha And oh my, YES, it's incredibly difficult to practice backward skating for me on a public session. I was attempting a backward one-foot glide, in a VERY SMALL area, near the boards when a 6-year-old hockey skater plowed into me. He was wearing full padding and a helmet. I only had on wrist guards. My bum was sore for several days. I'm very envious of the skaters I see online who are skating in a near-empty rink.

Your tutorials have helped me so much! You are very sweet. I am trying to learn backwards one-foot glides and I am wobbly like a balloon :') I skate, bring my feet parallel, bend my knees, and slowly bring one foot up - but then I lean to one side, even if I engage my core. Guess I need to squeeze more! I find it very hard to position my weight correctly in my boot, I end up way too in front. Also, in the backwards slalom, I find it very hard to lean to the outside edge - I distribute my weight in the opposite way, always putting weight on the wrong foot... Any tips for that? :') My coach went nuts today hahaha
@ddazuulada2 жыл бұрын
Hi Coach Julia, I was wondering, how can I correct my ankles if I'm turning back around in a circle instead of travelling in a straight line in a one-foot back glide? Much love, your videos are the best complement to my skating journey 😊
@TheLarryBrown2 жыл бұрын
You are concentrating your weight on one edge of the blade. When doing any one foot glide you need to skate flat on the blade with your weight equal on both edges. Since you are skating on one edge, concentrate on putting weight on the other edge and you will improve.

Thank you so much for this video!!! I've been struggling with backward wiggles for 5 weeks now!!! My current instructors are college students at a college rink and I'm in a basic one group (mostly small children haha) everything has been very easy for me, but the backward wiggles are my enemy. One of the instructors told me I should slightly lean forward while moving back in forth to do them, and obviously, my toe pick got the best of me. I did actually end up learning how to do backward wiggles.. forward? Although I'm sure it has an actual name, that's what we'll call it for now. Thank you so much for this video!
