Hello D.A. I did 2 from your channel today. The first was the ruins, painting first and it was ok. The second was this and I was pleased with the result! You broke down the drawing into easily digestible bits. The painting was easy peasy (love the Brits way with their language) I'm looking forward to the rest of the ink & watercolor series. Too bad my job gets in the way with my passion. Much love from the Bronx.

Thank you again. I do enjoy watching these. I watched the first one, tried it and was very pleased. Looking forward to this one although more challenging. I've just finished a line and wash of a section of the St. Marks's basilica in Venice. Not really satisfied ( not an easy subject) but as you said it's all a learning curve.

Thank you for this great video. Not sure if i missed the information or not but compared to the first video you start this one with inking first. What are the tips to decide to start with watercolor or with ink ?
@PhilDaviesArtist4 жыл бұрын
The first one i the exception - I do all the rest in this series with the pen first. My rule of thumb is that the more complex the subject matter, the more likely I'd start with pen first. With a subject like the Sydney Opera House, and especially the next 5 sketches coming up, it would be very difficult to lay down watercolour without any guide marks first. The subjects are just too intricate for that (the first one of the Greek ruins was the exception). You can, of course, start with watercolour for any subject but you'd need to draw your subject out in pencil first, then add the watercolour and then add some ink work on top. But that's more of a watercolour / pen & wash painting as opposed to a quicker sketch which I'm focusing on for this series. Hope that makes sense!

The second sketch was very good again and I managed not to botch it. One question. I'm using HP paper, which I never use and bought by mistake. It's obviously more difficult than cp, but I've heard it's suited to line and wash. What's your take on that Phil?
@PhilDaviesArtist4 жыл бұрын
I agree with you Barbara - it's more difficult to use from a watercolour perspective because the paint dries quicker. From a sketching point of view, I love the feel of pen on hot pressed paper and with my limited watercolour skills, I can get away with quick sketches where I only use watercolour sparingly. But for a full watercolour I have to use CP paper to get an acceptable amount of cauliflowers!

Phi I had so much fun painting along with you! I have been in a painters block and I discovered my drawing has been my problem! So thank you for your lessons on the watercolor sketching !What is the cost of membership now?
