In this tutorial, we teach you a few key concepts in skiing such as angulation, rotational separation and how different turn shapes affect your skiing. We also show how I was a skier that could ski some gnarly stuff but my technique was far from optimal like most skiers are that has not gotten any training. I then go on to show what drills that helped me understand how to ski better about a decade ago.
What is in this how-to ski tutorial:
00:00 Intro
02:31 Ski terminology
05:28 Lifting the inside ski
07:57 Ski pole drag
09:13 Javelin turns
10:39 Short turns
12:42 Short turns over a ridge
13:22 J-Turns

I have practiced this over the season and its really helped my skiing. I am an intermediate skier and found the ski lift exercise really highlighted my weaknesses and also the pole exercise was great. I'm still working on the other exercises. I was always the last one down the slope as I kept practicing these things as it made my skiing feel so much more in control (and more fun).

This should certainly appeal to my teenaged daughter (a great instructor can get the attention of any age). I'm an instructor and she loves skiing with me but doesn't listen to me when I try to get her to slow down and work on technique with drills. Also, that piece of video of you when you were 18 (?) lining up for then dropping that feature is a great example of zee shitzen technique, ya. Well done. Good on you for pursuing doing it right. So many folks buy new skis rather than spending the cash on what would influence their experience to a much greater extent: instruction.

I found your channel and love it. Thank you! I have only skied a few times ever, no instruction, just trying to imitate others going by. It turns out that I was doing all 5 of those exercises yesterday, without even knowing it! Probably not for the right reasons, though: 1. Lift inside ski - First time was because my inside ski caught a rut, so I lifted it, instead of getting drug off balance 2. Dragging poles - because I was scared of losing balance. 3. Javelin turns- sounds crazy, but it was easier to control just the outer ski once it got icy and rutted in the afternoon 4. Short turns - This was the most fun way to keep speed down on steeper sections 5. J turns - This is what I would do when I got going too fast, and needed to reset my run. I have skied 2 days this year. I notice that the more tired I get, the more centered and balanced I ski, and the faster I tend to go. I think it's because I'm too tired to constantly try to burn off speed. I just want to get down the mountain before my legs give out. I plan to ski a lot more this year. I'll be watching all your videos. Thanks again for the help!

Who is this guy (ski god)? He is SO chill. I would love to ski with him. He keeps it fun (like it should be). I spent the day with a fellow ski instructor who critisized me for lack of angulation but couldn't explain to me how to improve. But the ski pole drag exercise (7:54) helped me know what this is supposed to feel like. Thanks! Subscribed and can't seem to get enough of these chill videos.

Am old now and rarely get to ski, but I am better than I ever was. WhenI saw that big mountain clip, could have been me. Did the same mistakes but still went for it. Today, only limited taking risks, too old...

I went skiing this February with school and our instructor never taught us how to parallel I just kinda taught myself how to do it and I actually learned it well and could do it every time it made slopes a lot easier as well as before I found red slopes hard snow plot but with parallel u can just cruise down. Watching this video makes me happy as I feel as if I tough myself well as I was skiing like how you said to in this video😆

I learned these drills in the Swiss Ski School and they’ve helped me so much! I'm a very decent slope skier, but I'm just starting out with freestyle skiing, could you do a video on going from slope skier to freestyle skier, and not too easy stuff such as 50-50 on boxes, but more like. How to control long airtime and big heights, and how to balance rails and tubes. Appreciate the high quality tutorials tho, when I'm 18 I really want to join a camp!!!!

These are generally great tips. Took lessons many years ago and learned some of these concepts. Keeping the upper body pointing down the fall line is perhaps the most important point- everything else comes from that.
@gnrendeiro
@gnrendeiro 4 жыл бұрын
Keeping your body facing the down is a great tip but the one I find to be the most important is to do the planting of the pole right before the start of the turn and as vertical and far ahead as possible. Ideally one should be doing a 90º degrees angle between the snow and the pole and at the same time plant the pole right next to the front tip of the ski. This will transfer your weight straight to the tip of the ski and give you the grip and control needed to carve at higher speeds and keep you ski planted in the snow.
@cvn6555
@cvn6555 4 жыл бұрын
@@gnrendeiro Agree that the pole plant sets up the entire turn. Have used longer poles than required for years so that I can initiate the turn earlier.
