Jonny, I have to apologize because I said to myself, when I began watching your videos, that there is no way this young guy knows squat about pro tips. Saying I was wrong would be an understatement. I love how you explain things, and I love how enthusiastic you are about fishing and teaching. Thanks for making me humble, and thanks for what you do. Keep it up brother.

So, been pretty much power fishing all of my life...cranks, spinners, jerkbait, chatter..etc. Also used a stick worm, but never used a jig. Just started to slow down and use them and love it. Just recently, started to learn how to skip. Could not get it consistent and knew there was something I was missing. Tucking the arm up against the armpit was the issue! I just got back in from practicing on our pond. It made all the difference in the world. Funny thing is, watched so many videos and not one person ever mentioned this. Just wanted to say thank you!

You are the first person I've seen on KZbin talk about tucking in your arm when skipping I was terrible at skipping before I started tucking in my arm when I skipped but no it's like second nature I learned it by trial and error now if someone asks me about skipping I tell them to tuck there arm in when they cast and I'm glad someone on KZbin explained that for new anglers trying to get better

Nice video! I've watched a lot of skipping videos prior to learning, you're the only one that mentioned the arm tuck. I never really noticed that I did that until I saw this video. For all of those learning, like he said just practice! It's quite frustrating at first but it will really come through with practice! Another good tip, keep your tension knob on the loser side, then turn your magnet to it's max setting while learning. You might not always get the distance you want, but it'll keep you from making a new home for the birds.

Great, great complete visual & verbal demonstration. I'm a bank angler and just started skipping lures this Spring. 75% of the bass I've caught so far have come from skipping weightless Zoom super flukes under docks with a spinning reel using braid with a mono leader, including a 4 lb lmb. I'm getting better with the baitcaster too with more reps. This vid will help a lot. Thanks! As Roland Martin would say, "Son, this is the deal!"

Johnny, you are very good at slinging that jig under the dock and at explaining what you're doing but I've got to point out a couple things I don't believe you've taken into consideration. I'm 5'8" tall, for example, and I'm fishing from a bank far more often than I'm fishing from the bow of someone's boat. I really do love my 7' rods for a lot of things, but skipping baits isn't one of them- at least not in the early stages of learning. I've resorted to using a 5'8" pistol grip rod while practicing everything else your video illustrates. I'm getting more distance and accuracy as I work on the technique, and I have no doubt that it will carry over to using longer rods when the occasions arise. But if you care to do a reality check on it, beach your boat and try skipping a bait under that dock from the shore with a 7' rod. I frequently employ a roll cast in confined spaces, so launching a bait isn't a problem. Getting the rod angle and bait trajectory is, however.

Go ahead and hit the pontoon boat with your first cast ;-). Really though, here's how I catch bass on docks. Skip my jig in, pick out the backlash, then discover there's a bass swimming all over the lake with my jig. It works!

I have been wanting to learn how to do this but i am afraid of the backlashes i might endure. i can skip with a spinning rod pretty easy, but a little worried with a bait caster. I noticed you didn't say anything about setting the brakes. Is that because you just leave everything set the way you normally would? Do you thumb the spool instantly after your release? Any info would be helpful on this part, so that i know what to expect after the release. Thank you for the video. Your videos are very informative. I just subscribed.
@FishtheMoment
@FishtheMoment 6 жыл бұрын
woosa42 check out the segment at the 4:50 minute mark in this video again. I use the words “spool tension” and “drag” instead of breaks, so that’s probably why you missed it. You can still skip a fishing lure with you breaks tightened down a lot. In the video, I tighten the breaks about 90% of the way and can still skip the lure. You just need to cast hard/faster to get the bait to skip when your breaks are really tight

So, you don't have to adjust the centrifugal or magnetic brakes at all? Just adjust the spool tensioner?

Great videos as usual. Just wondering if you had any opinions or options on doing all these types of casting and skipping with a baitcaster being a co angler from the back of the boat. The co angler has a little harder of a time with all these techniques between power poles the engine, consoles and graphs and not a casting platform. This would pertain more for my 11 year old son who naturally like any other angler like to come up to the front of boat to fish because there’s less stuff in the way. Thanks for any info.

Hey man! Very good video. I'm new to the channel so you may have already made this video seeing as its a pretty common topic, but do you think perhaps you could make a tutorial covering how to fish a thick grassy lake? There's one very close to my house and I haven't had any luck... I believe it's thick on the surface but thin down under and there are some lily pads... thanks.

Thank you! I haven't yet. There aren't many grassy lakes in my area. There's one lake about 2 hours from me that I plan to fish this fall that has really thick grass mats. Without knowing the lake, I'd suggest trying a punch rig with a 1 oz weight this time of year. I've also caught really good bass on the inside grass line near the bank what a senko this time of year in Wisconsin. Bass will move super shallow this time of year. Hope that helps!
