We often think of sleep as the third pillar of health underneath diet and exercise but Matthew believes sleep is the first pillar on which all others sit.
Feel Better Live More Bitesize is my new video series for your mind, body and heart. Each week I’ll be featuring inspirational stories and practical tips from some of my former guests.
Today’s guest is world-leading sleep researcher, author of the international best-selling book ‘Why We Sleep’ and Professor of Neuroscience and Psychology, Matthew Walker.
Matthew shares research on how important sleep is for our health and the amazing power it has to recharge our mind and body. He believes that sleep is one of the most efficacious forms of health insurance that you could ever wish for.
We explore how proper sleep can benefit your life and Matthew shares his tips for better sleep.

I'm reading Prof. Walker's book "Why We Sleep" at the moment. He writes beautifully - not at all dry, like he speaks, very easy to understand. He has taught me so much already..

@@DrChatterjeeRangan Thank you so much! I found them yesterday. Both of them are wonderful because you have already done thorough research and pick really apposite questions to ask your interviewee. What a treasure trove of education about health this channel is! Great job, Dr Chatterjee - we're very lucky to have you staying on top of things for us. With great respect to my wonderful GP and her colleagues, life is busy, she does have a life outside of keeping me well, and it's not always easy for them to stay up-to-date with the whole range of things included in general medicine. So I take responsibility for living the best life I can on the basis of her guidance and any research I can find myself. :-) (I hope I can compensate a little for my misspent youth, LOL!)

What about taking melatonin to help you sleep? Is that considered natural sleep or is it more a sedated sleep?

Thank you Doctor. I'm skeeny and I just turned 70. I usually sleep 5 hours for years. I want to improve my sleep. I started a few months intermittent fasting. I had a few dreams lately and noticed having a hard on too.

Meditating is also great way to help get a better sleep! 😀 Meditating will: - increase melatonin (the sleep hormone) - increase serotonin (precursor of melatonin) - reduce heart rate - decrease blood pressure - activate parts of the brain that control sleep
