I was taught in training 1 tooth over, and 1 tooth down to slope it pretty much exactly the same idea as you did, obviously it doesn't have to be perfect but that's the idea to get the slope. With easy collapsing soft sand I get why slopes are better for the job, but I'd prefer benches with harder material, and what you said about getting in and out of the trench
