I have been doing this naturally even as a novice because im a clencher. I just hold the pipe with my teeth and breathe theough my nose occasionally exhaling with my mouth. I found that this was the best way to get flavor because without breathing through my nose i cant taste anything. I am actually surprised that people dont breathe out their nose because of the lack of flavor. The great thing about breath smoking isthat the smoke lingers in your mouth and so the flavor is constant. I think people overthink the technique. Just breathe normally with your nose and use a bit of throat from time to time.

I think you nailed it. IMHO the principal thing to focus on is getting a cool, slow, easy, and constant burn. Very relaxing. And it gets you into the zone. And produces the best flavours and aromas. Your point is that people evolve into that naturally, provided they always remember to relax and enjoy themselves. If there's any technique to whole thing, it's the bellows effect you get by occasionally blowing gently into the stem. That way, you're not fighting to keep the pipe lit: it ends up burning easily on its own.

Yes indeed. "Cool, slow, easy, and constant burn" is the main thing.

I've heard of this method since I started pipe smoking, and I've seen a few videos about it, and it everyone makes it seems so complicated. You dumbed it down enough to make me realize that I've been doing it subconsciously all along.

When I first came across the term "breath smoking" I believe it was from the same article you had read. Just like you I didn't fully understand it, so I thought it must be something really difficult to learn. But after hearing your explanation I realised it's something I've been doing all this time. The only thing you need to focus on when attempting "breath smoking" is to not focus on anything at all.

Watching this while smoking some Dunhill EM in my Parker with a cup of coffee and of course using the breath method. Ahhh so much to be thankful for... I highly recommend this method as you make the most of the tobacco your smoking, less moisture in the pipe (no gurgling), fewer re-lights, brings out the flavours in the tobacco, cooler smoke and burns the tobacco evenly with no waste at the bottom of the pipe. Bradley is absolutely correct when he says you will develop your own way of doing it and what works best for you. I would also recommend watching "muttnchop piper's" video on the breath method, it helped me. Keep the videos coming mate! Cheers. Sal

It's relaxed smoking. I'm usually doing something else, like watching S&T on YT. I'm not thinking about smoking the pipe or cigar. I'm still breathing normally and relaxed.. As I'm puffing some air goes back into the stem. Sometimes I blow very lightly to help the bowl stay burning. Cool video and explanation.

I like to exhale through my nose. I feel it helps to capture the full flavour of the tobacco being smoked. Since the nose is very well implicated in taste, it seems just natural that the whole face impregnates itself of that delicious tobacco. I can't smoke without my nose now. This habit I've developed works well with strong/spicy tobaccos. Best experience with Five bros.

I think it's something that has to happen organically and unconsciously, which makes it ALMOST pointless to try to teach someone how to do it.

Not an easy thing to describe. Your approach was one of the better ones I've seen, and more so, you stressed individuality, etc. Same goes for blowing smoke out of your nose. I've seen some very complicated explanations or instructions and the insistence on using the term "retrohale" which just adds more confusion. All too often, the simpler something is, the harder it is to explain.

I agree with your comment about it not being a particular method. I've always just thought of it as "sipping", and I do this on certain blends, such as straight Virginia blends. Lets you get the most out of blends that are not highly flavored. Thanks for the video!

Hi. Bradley, thanks again for this your clip,The Muttnchop Piper' on KZbin was telling about this same technique some days weeks ago, too,and I did find these both pretty interesting, But let me tell you what, the hardest thing is switching to pipes ,after 30 year Ryo tobacco and cigar smoking,even if you have a several good branded briars and good tobacco selection handy, as I do,I still find myself going between the pipes and Ryo cigarettes,back and forth,no matter what,an irritating fact isin't it?Yet a slight tongue bite is another minus when it comes to pipe smoking. All Righ, so much for that, and Thank you for sharing This informative article' of yours on various smoking techiniques, Its always good to learn some more on piping,have a Good time. Paul

Hey Bradley, another great video, always enjoy your take on tobacco. I'd like to hear your thoughts and perhaps a review on St. Bruno Flake someday. I agree with your assessment on the "breath technique" as not really being a technique, though I do remember Alan Kerslake's video on the technique, it was a sad day when I heard he had passed away. Anyway, don't want to add sadness here to the comments, take care. Corey

i was in your situation before when i meet a local pipe smoker who assist me in getting to know how to smoke pipe tobacco. very hard to explain or to teach...best way to put it is sucking through a straw and play with the water inside your mouth without drinking it or prevent the water going down your throat. you will taste the tobacco flavour if you do it right...is hard but worth it.... or you can just smoke slowly not getting the bowl hot. but this is just my experience im not a pro or long time smoker....

This is difficult to follow... So could you explain it as breathing in and out 99 percent thru nose and one percent thru the pipe... Either as a push of smoke back thru the bowl or as a open mouth exhale?
@Maxijyze

When you breathe in, do you Inhale all the way? Or just at the mouth? A full inhale pulls smoke to the lungs no?

I find that for me this was an issue of separating my breathing and my puffing through the pipe. As a new pipe smoker, these things were somehow linked, and even though I don't inhale, the cadence of puffing the pipe was dictated by my breathing-"cadence". I had already heard of this concept, so when trying to maximize flavor when clenching, it didn't take long before puffing and breathing were completely separate actions. It seems like that is breath smoking in a nutshell, but I keep wondering...why sip smoke into the mouth and then let it back into the pipe? Won't it make the pipe burn hotter than necessary? Thanks!

For me, it's just a byproduct of smoking in that relaxed way, It can also help keep the bowl burning cool without having to puff away really aggressively.
