kipkay my tip is before you go to the circuit board put a little bit of soder on the the tip and then you don t gotta heat it to long and risk to damage a part

Back in the 90's I worked for an electronics company and we used PCB Holders. Makes it so much easier to solder components, onto a circuit board. I would recommend one if you solder components on a PCB on a regular basis. Amazon sells a bunch of them.

I really love these videos lately on how to do things that people think are harder than they are. I was trying to do a fun DIY project with my friend a while back and she was terrified to use the soldering iron. I showed her your last how to solder video and she realized that it really isn't a big deal and is a useful skill to learn. Thank you! :)

2:32 maybe useful to remove the chip from its holder... And useful to speak about the soldering time/duration. In my head the red lamp started to flash sometimes as I see your video, but OK, useful and thanks for sharing! :)

Fixed mine. Check underneath the display circuit board for a short. Disconnect the battery and clean in between the pins with a knife (gently) so they are no longer in contact.

I really enjoyed this instructional video. I never got into the maker thing until later in life. Now, I have a lot of skills to build, as well as tools to buy.

Hi And thank you for this video! I do have a question. If leg lengths are broken short of the other side of the board. Will the solder be able to be affectively connect to the end board?

I havent soldered in quite a minute, and when I did I would hold the solder to the tip of the iron and just wait for it to melt then transfer lol, I was bad at that

One thing that everyone doing soldering also should pay attention to is the temperature tolerance of the component. Some components could be destroyed if you use to much time soldering it. The datasheet for the component would indicate this if it is an issue. One of the most common errors beginners do when soldering is to use too high temperature on their iron or use too much time fiddling about and end up with a perfectly soldered destroyed component.

It's been ages since I soldered anything, and even back then I barely knew what I was doing. Is a clip-on heat sink still necessary when soldering components like ICs?

The soldering iron tip needs to be "tinned" much better for maximum heat transfer. Pick up a block of Sal Ammoniac.

Thats a very useful video. A quick question, for soldering ICs on to a board, how much temeprature setting do you recommend?

Another thing to take note is the quality of the board itself. If it's cheaply made,when you try to apply his technique of heating the board first and then letting the solder flow,the copper pad will fall right out

JACK HQ I wouldnt, just use a similer diameter that he used, and just touch the solder to the iron to get less solder.

Just a little tip, when you clean everything, don't use steel wool, because little bits can fall and make your board short circuit.

Adam Korb There should never be that much heat to melt the Board. My soldering station has adjustable temperature.

Adam Korb oh hell no solder melting point is about 200 °C and the silver dots are prob about 500 °C

I got really good at soldering and then my industry/job went away from soldering and used heatshrink, as well as crush joiners and heatshrink with solder in them and now I'm pretty average again.

don't use steel, use something softer like copper or brass, steel wool will scratch the protective coating on your tip allowing the tip to erode away

I been at least 5 years trying to do this it never ever works like this for me. Always sticks to the tip never sticks where you want it. The hardest thing just about ever and the guides never really show you how it dont work most of the time. Never seen anyone able to work it like this

Anonymous User just because you don't own one doesn't mean you can't benefit from one. There are makerspaces all over the place, plus you can order almost anything from 3D hubs... I personally own one and it is the most useful and cool tool I've ever bought. The possibilities are endless! I think of stuff everyday to print out !

probably you're not holding the iron on the board long enough. The board needs to be really hot to get it to stick
