You view it from an experienced contractor point of view. Everyone else is the homeowner point of view. Most wouldn't know what is right or wrong about an installation. I didn't give it a second thought when you nailed the straps down. The more I watch the more I learn. Thanks again for your invaluable knowledge.

I'm Not a roofer, but I've installed a few metal roofs. I and every roofer I've talked to, use galvanized ring shank nails for the strapping. I've tried to pull the boards up after the the correct number of nails were installed and ended up having to cut around the nails and pull each one with a flat bar. So if Jeff used smooth shank and only 2 nails over 4' , yeah it won't hold.

The "50 year" manufacturing guarantee is largely a legal game. In the one I investigated, they dropped the warranty to the more typical 25 years for commercial installations. This is because commercial owners tend to hold onto properties long enough for the warranty to come into play.

It is old and there is no felt just heavy plastic membrane. It isn't our forever house but we have to do something. I prefer to use the loft which is boarded for storage and placing the mat on its floor would require a top layer of ply I guess?

This is one of the few construction channels where living comfort is considered. He has covered insulation, and isolation ... waiting on ventilation. Many new construction buildings have abysmal ventilation systems. It's not just for allergies anymore, with families living in isolation from infectious loved ones, a good ventilation could be a matter of life and death... and who doesn't like fresh air? Some of the systems currently on the market have really efficient regenerative heat exchangers built-in to reduce the impact on heat and AC cost.

I'm really glad I you did this video! I'm hoping to do my roof possibly next spring/summer. I do have a few questions though.. I want to go with a black roof (I live in Northern MN) to help my 4/12 roof melt snow off. But I was also thinking of doing a foil faced foam under the steel to have a radiant barrier for summer time. Would the vinal still go down first on top of my 3 tab shingles? Or with 2" foam board, would I still need the vinal sheet? I'm sure it would still just help even more, so I do like that idea! If you can let me know your thoughts I'd appreciate it!

Remove the shingles, install the rigid foam board (one or two layers of 2” depending on your budget) then install the strapping and forget about the underlayment he mentioned in the video. You’ll have an R value of 13 or 26 just on your roof! That’ll help with any noise from rain or hail. AND!! It’ll help with energy efficiency as well! Oh also, installing two layers of 2” rigid foam board is the same price as the underlayment he’s talking about in the video. You’re better off investing in the rigid board. There are more benefits to it!😀

@berniemac8413

That’s expensive! So for a small roof roughly 30 squares, you’re looking at 30 rolls x ~$200/roll.. plus tax! You’re looking at $6,500 just on this underlayment!! The tin is cheaper than the underlayment!! 😂😀 at that price you’re better off installing polyiso rigid foam board under your metal roof! Not only will it help with the noise reduction, but the foam would help with energy efficiency as well!

@Les Currently it's limited by production capacity, but you can get on a waiting list. I also prefer function over form, so won't be using them myself either ... I mean what do you put on the other side(s) of the house? They really don't seem to have considered that - especially for hip style roofs common in hurricane prone locations (west coast engineers don't think of these things) The biggest barrier to roof mounted solar is that the orientation often dictated by zoning and building codes is incompatible with efficient solar conversion. In suburbia where weirdly oriented culdesacs and small lot sizes are common, it can be nearly impossible to properly orient the roof for solar while accounting for offsets, setbacks and easements... plus it would look weird and stick out like a sore thumb. That's not to say that a solar subdivision couldn't be done if it was planned from the start.

BIGGEST pet-peeve, a contractor not 'educating you' on the different options available and just selling you on price. $20k for a metal roof for that size house seems like a good price, looking forward to seeing the roof redone and getting details on price, choice, installation,etc.

I've had two homes with metal roofs. One was a new home with true standing seam (which uses very few fasteners). The metal for the standing seam comes in a giant roll that is formed and cut to the exact length at the site. There is a lot of oil canning of the metal during this forming process and the metal doesn't sit perfectly flat on the decking. All that to say, this roof was extraordinarily loud because rain, hail, or even leaves in the fall impact a metal sheet that is sitting just off the surface of the decking and there aren't enough fasteners to hold it down tight. Even a light sprinkle could be heard inside the house enough to where you had to raise your voice slightly. On the other hand, last year I installed a 5V screw down roof to an older home and it's as quiet as a shingle roof. Why? Two reasons, the first being a screw down roof has lots of attachment points so it naturally sits closer to the decking. The second reason is the metal form, the 5V has more contour than a standing seam and therefore much less oil canning. The reason this is important is because oil canning will cause the metal to sit just off the surface of the decking and any impacts will be like beating on an empty drum, very load. I've taken the long road around to say, no amount of vinyl will prevent a metal roof from being loud unless the metal sits tight to the decking. The way Jeff is showing to install the metal over strapping would be incredibly loud!!

They installed a metal roof in my neighborhood just to the rafters of the house no plywood, shingles or soundproofing. All I could think off is that is going to sounds like golf balls.

Wouldn't two layers of shingles work well enough for sound proofing on their own?

Metal roofs are very loud when hit with rain, shingles are not so there is no reason to soundproof a shingled roof. The point of this video is to show how to make a metal roof quieter.

I learned that whomever put the roof on my house screwed it up! Especially around the chimneys. They screwed the boots to the top of the roof! No wonder it leaks!

We had a steel roof installed about 15 years ago, that membrane was not installed and our roof is not noisy. The only time you hear the rain is when it pores really hard.

If your metal roof is screwed directly to OSB/plywood you won't have much noise. In the north I think they use battens for air/moisture control, but in the south, that's not necessary so the metal is directly fastened to the sheeahing. As long as there isn't an air gap between the back of the metal and the sheathing, there won't be any noise.

What about moisture build up under all that sound proofing material against a metal over a shingled roof. The barrier has added a second barrier.
