How to Soundproof a Stud Wall

In NYC where I live most neighboring apartments are only separated by this hollow stud construction with two plasterboards, even in highend apartements. It's terrible for sound. Worse still, the stud does not go all the way up to the concreate ceiling, instead, there is a drop down plaster board ceiling, which all apartments on the same floor share, and so any noise that the neighbor makes echos in the hollow ceiling space as well.

Yes, thats just poor construction. Here in the UK that wouldn't' meet building regulations in new buildings, but of course older properties can still have these issues.

Hi Timmy Tan, yes, absolutely you can. It really depends on what level and type of noise you are tying to block. You can strip off the plasterboard on one side, add acoustic mineral wool and the ReductoClips direct to the stud, or for an even higher performance build a double stud (usually not required for stud walls in domestic properties). Hi Ruby Rose - You do have options. If you had a 50mm frame with a layer of acoustic grade plasterboard on each side and our SoundBoard 3 on top on one side, this would be a pretty good internal wall and would be 104mm.If you wanted higher performance, you could do two layers of acoustic plasterboard on one side, one layer of acoustic plasterboard on the other woth SoundBoard 4 on top. This would be 125mm.

@@theillusionzone can you lose 60mm of space to attach the ReductoClips directly to the exiting stud frame (no secondary wall needed) and do the ReductoClip Direct to wall system? Depending on the size of your wall there wouldn't be a huge price difference. Please do give us a call and we can talk through this with you [phone]. Soundproofing can be complex based on a number of criteria and knowing more information about the stud wall (assuming it's an internal wall within your property) any weaknesses e.g. doors etc and the space constraints you have, will help to ensure you have the correct solution for your needs.

@@theillusionzone The SoundBoard 4 is not designed to dampen the strong structural vibration created by direct impact on the offending wall. You need de-coupling for that. That doesn't mean it won't have any benefit as when you create an impact it also creates an airborne sound with it and this should be dampened to some degree by the SoundBoard 4, Also the increase of mass on the structure can help to reduce the resonance of the wall. But how much difference it will make is very difficult to say as this varies so much for different specific situations. If you can only lose 30mm, then the SoundBoard 4 is the best thing you can do with 30mm, but is it the correct thing for your problem, no it's not. Sometimes you can only do the best you can do with the space you've got.

A question: why did you put the foam outside of the plaster boards? Is it because you would like avoid compressing the wool inside?

I've got a 1.1m brick wall with 1.5m stud wall above it. The stud wall is level with the neighbours loungeroom/kitchen (and they love using those around midnight). I think fixing the stud wall would do it, but would that need to go all down the brick wall as well or could you just fix the stud wall? Also if I need ceiling soundproofing can I do that after, we don't know how much it'll solve the issues. Or what would you recommend?

I live in a semi detached house and can hear my neighbours shouting, music playing etc. Would the whole party wall in the entire house need to be done? I also have a gas fire that’s on the party wall. What would be the solution for that?

Hi Tory Adams, is it the case that you can hear noise from your neighbours when you are in both the upstairs and downstairs rooms? If so, then yes, you could soundproof the downstairs and upstairs party wall. With regards to the gas fire, we would need to know more about where it is positioned, for example, is it on a chimney breast and if so, if you put your ear to the wall can you hear noise coming through the chimney breast, or just the alcoves? Could this be used to block out extremely loud snoring from the next room i share a wall with in a house share. So loud i can hear it over ear phones and can even hear it on the ground floor in a 3 storey house( our rooms are both on the 3rd floor)

Hi 1steve1100 - This system will certainly help to reduce the volume and clarity of the sound comign through the wall and should give you a godo noticeable improvement. The problem with internal walls within a property as opposed to an attached property, is that there are many other paths for the sound to take. So some of the noise will be coming straigth through the wall, but it will also be travelling under the floor, over the ceiling, even out of his bedroom door and down the corridor back through your bedroom door etc. So its very difficult to block out internal noise completely without soundproofing every surface and building a soundproof room within a room. But this will certainly make things better and is relatively thin and simple.

Would this be an effective treatment for low vibrational impact sound (food steps)? My neighbour has Amtico vinyl floor tiles and I can hear their every step through my kitchen wall. My kitchen and living room are open plan so I'm considering separating the two rooms. Obviously a door would also be needed.

Hi awreckingball, when an impact is created it does two things. It creates an impact vibration that needs to be absorbed, but it also creates an airborne sound wave. The SoundBoard 4 will help to reduce the airborne part of the noise, so will help to reduce the noise to a degree. However, the vibration will still get through. In an ideal world, our ReductoClip system would be a better option for you as this reduces high levels of airborne sound and impact vibration. Hi Matty, soundproofing one wall would reduce the noise transfer between both rooms. On a stud wall construction, the recommendation would be to remove the plasterboard on one side, fill with acoustic mineral wool, attach acoustic grade plasterboard and then finally add the SoundBoard 4 (making sure you fix the board into the stud frame of the wall). I can't open the existing wall as its rental .would using the acoustic plasterboard by itself on top of the current pb make any difference it's to cancel out moaning not music

Hi NTST Player - Insulating inside the wall definitely helps, but you can still get pretty good results without opening it up if you can't do that. However, just adding a standard acoustic plasterboard will make little difference. You need to add a lot more mass and you also need to dampen the vibrations of the sound. Hi misterr50 - A standard domestic stud wall made up of 100mm frame, with no insulation and 1 sheet of standard 12.5mm plasterboard eitherside would be performing at around 35dB (Rw). Following the instruction of the video, removing one layer of board, filling with 100mm of high density acoustic mineral wool, replacing the plasterboard with 15mm aocustic plasterboard, then finishing with our SoundBoard 4, would bring the performance to around 53dB (Rw). So a substantial improvement in both dB figures and in real world perception.
