Today I take you through my steps for successfully sowing Snapdragons and Larkspur. I will show you which varieties I am sowing and how I get the best results
It’s difficult to know how to express myself on social media when there is so much sorrow and devastation in the world we live in, particularly in Ukraine. My thoughts and prayers are with the people of Ukraine.

Lovely choices, similar to mine! I’m particularly looking forward to Potomac Lavender. I’ve winter sown some larkspur in jugs which are germinating and I’ve started some snaps in soil blocks this year so we’ll have to see how that goes.

Hi Jan, that sounds great! I've never tried the winter sowing method here - I'm not sure it gets cold enough for long enough, but I do autumn sow some seeds and then keep them in my mini greenhouse and cold frames - I didn't have great success with those this year so my spring seed sowing schedule is extremely busy! 🌸💚

This is the first time I've learned about what we call in the USA fall planting. I really messed it up because I thought that meant plant it in the garden in fall. Good learning experience as I have no hopes of those tiny seeds still being where I put the seed which was on the top of ground. Throughout the winter I saw cats digging and rolling on those sites, several deep holes dug by some little burrowing animal and dogs running through the beds. I put down massive amounts of seed for my English-type garden but I don't have much hope. The description stakes blew away during the winter or else the writing came off and there is nothing but a blank marker. This probably will not be the year of my English garden, but after watching your videos, I know what to do next fall. Thank you.

Hi Ginene, I'm so sad and sorry for your hopes being shattered by those pesky creatures! At least you will know what to do now but, also, it's not too late to try again this year. Honestly, there is still plenty of time to sow some more seeds. Things like Cosmos, zinnias, strawflowers and scabious are really fast growing and we haven't even started our dahlias yet. Also, nigella and orlaya and many other seeds can still be scattered directly onto your flower beds - just try to protect the areas this time with some chicken wire or some branches to deter the animals. Good luck. 🌸🌿🌱👍🏼

I grew Black Prince one year, and a seed fell into a crack in the patio, and came back for three years straight.

That's amazing Anne. I can see a smapdragon growing on the very top of our 10ft wall every year. I never planted it (obviously) but it's the most stubborn seedling but it brings me so much joy when I spot it each year. It would be fabulous if it could self-propagate and then I'd have a wall of them! 😁

Hi Annette. I’m delighted to report that acetone also removes Sharpie ink from labels. This has solved one of those small but irritating problems for me and means hundreds of plastic labels can be re-used. Thank you so much!

I use a pencil to write on my white plastic labels and use an eraser to remove it 😊 It lasts much better in heat, cold, wet dry conditions, than sharpie did for me.

Hi Yvonne, gosh, yes, snaps can be a nightmare, especially since they grow soooo slowly. Good luck with your new ones 😁💚

Looked for a video on your germination results…is there one? Ty

Hi there, you may find something by searching my 'Seed Sowing' playlist but, I don't tend to film separate videos just about the results - they are usually part of a longer video with other content. Do you think that individual results videos would be useful?

don't you moisten the soil at all? Before sowing or after?
@cottoverdi
@cottoverdi Жыл бұрын
Hi there, yes, I always moisten my compost but I do it after I've sown the seeds by sitting the seed tray in a tray of water and letting the compost absorb the water that way. This ensures that the little seeds don't all get washed to the edges or covered compost. I don't tend to pre-moisten my compost because I find it messy when filling my trays 😆
